Tanzania has overtaken Kenya in exports to EA mainly because it is now exporting a lot of gold to Uganda. Uganda has strategically set up almost 8 gold refineries so a lot of the gold from Tanzania and DRC that was previously being refined in Dubai and Europe is now being refined in Uganda. In the meantime Kenya has been blocking trade with Uganda in dairy, maize, eggs, sugar etc, which has limited the growth of Uganda's imports from Kenya. The bottom line is that Kenya is paying the price for protecting its uncompetitive dairy and maize farmers from regional competition. Kenya needs more progressive and liberal trade policies with EA.

But you may surpass Kenya in trade in EAC but not in global trade!! That is what you folks don't get and think you have overtaken Kenya in everything!! The EAC has countries like TZ creating barrriers to trade as well as infighting from other countries Kenya included!! So limit your talk to EAC and not global matters because Kenya still beats your GDP. Plus Kenyans are fighting bad governance unlike TZ which has been sold to the highest bidders with no noise from Tanzanians.

And if something doesn't change soon, we are definitely on our way to being overtaken. Travel to TZ, travel to Rwanda. If you keep seeing yourself as the best you can't see the best of others and those countries are growing, no doubt, even if you want to keep seeing them as small so that you don't feel small.
