8:34 on powerbanks: beware that some powerbanks have built in auto shutdown feature. My Sony powerbank just shuts down when zoom h1 is plugged, because it doesn’t drain much power. And another note is on USB wall adapters: they may produce hiss sound. The same hiss may appear when you plug h1 to the computer as audio interface. It’s somehow connected to “noisy ground” thing, but I haven’t figured out how to deal with this.
@RogerinFinland4 жыл бұрын
Good tips! I use an Anker power bank and that one seems OK with the H1n. Grounding issues sometimes are related to faulty cables/connections. I'll have to test a bit more using the H1n as an interface and see how it works for me. Thanks for the input! 👍🏻

It's a great little device, I hope you enjoy it! When it comes to accessories, my suggestion would be to buy them when you need them. You can start by using the H1n on its own, and then see if you find limitations that would require extra accessories. For interviews, if you'll use it as a handheld microphone you don't need anything else than the device to get started. If you'll use it as a boom microphone, then you might want a stand (I have a video on using the H1n as a boom microphone). Good luck and ask away! 👍🏼😊

One other hack would be useful. Trying to record to the H1n coming line in directly from an audio mixer will result in inferior distorting results. There is supposed to be a special kind of audio cable to correct this, it's not a simple audio cable but has another quality. Do you know about this? I'd like to use the H1n for direct line recording, it's so small and convenient to pack on gigs . But so far the recordings are not good at all. Thanks for the H1n hack video.

Happy to help! The XY microphone might be good enough, but you might want to look at dual/double lav mics. Basically it's two lavaliers with one cable, so to one stereo track you get one microphone one the right and one in the left channel. Takes some work in post, but it's a pretty cheap and effective solution!
@PH1M03 жыл бұрын
@@RogerinFinland thanks Roger! I thought about using the XY for one person and a lav for the second, that might not balance correctly without a mixer so your solution with the dual lav may be better. I looked for a recording of this setup on KZbin and found none. My question is if you do the dual, when you playback on headphones will you hear one person in one ear and the other person in the other ear? Or will it be stereo hearing both people each in both headphones? Thanks again Roger for all the cool videos !
@RogerinFinland3 жыл бұрын
Well, you can't actually use the XY and the 3.5mm input at the same time, it's either one or the other. The only way to do "multitrack" with the H1n is to trick it to have 2 mono tracks (like with those dual mics). And yes, the monitoring will be one person in each ear. It might be possible to tell it to output a mixed mono out, but I'm not sure about that. And thanks for the kind comments!!

Nice video. When used with the external line-in I've measured (using RightMark Audio Analyzer) that there is a slight low cut filter applied (-3dB at 40Hz, -4.5dB at 30 Hz) even when bypassing the mic and with the H1n's Lo Cut turned off. This would be problematic if one wants to record a line source with deep bass accurately, such as pipe organ music. Is there some hack to record without this filtering of the very deep bass, flat down to at least 20Hz?

Useful & interesting video Roger. I discovered a new use for the mighty little H1n this week - it functions extremely well as an audio interface. My laptop mics are failing. H1n works brilliantly for Zoom meetings and can be powered by USB from the laptop - sound quality is way better than any headset - winning ! Is there a way to remove the handling noise in post ? I've lost a few field recordings from handling noise. Cheers, Gavin
@RogerinFinland4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gavin! Thanks for the comment ☺️ Because the handling noise is usually composed of short, fairly sharp sounds denoising algorithms won't work with it. Those work best with continuous sounds that have a fairly constant frequency footprint (think of the constant hum of an AC, or similar). A sharp noise, covers a broad freq spectrum for a short time. If you use it as a field mic a lot, might make sense to look at some grip with a shock mount (bigger than the one in my video).
@Gogies7773 жыл бұрын

I have the Rode SmartLav and Lavalier Go, both without battery. The SmartLav is cheaper, but you need a TRRS to TRS adapter. The Go is more expensive, sounds better (to my ear) and doesn't require adapters. Other than those two, I've got no experience with other lav mics.

Any tips to record music? Example recording an electric bass.
@RogerinFinland4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, if you have a preamp with a line-jack output, then you could use the H1n to record from it (I'm thinking Line6 Pod XT and the likes). If you have a more traditional analog preamp with only XLR out, then it's more tricky. If you want to record the sound from the amp you can try to place the H1n just in front of the cone (5cm away) set the gain to not clip and play with the placement (on axis, off axis, etc). I have to say that I've read a bit about electric guitar recording (even if I'm a noob at it), but I know even less about bass. I hope this somehow helped 😅

Great video! What cable (or cable type) do you use to connect the rode videomicro to the H1N?
@RogerinFinland3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Just a 3.5mm TRS extension cable to plug the cable that comes with the VideoMicro. Or if the H1n is right next the VideoMicro, then just the one that came with the microphone 👍🏻☺️

thanks for the tips. I have a question! does zoom h1n record in 2 lines ? I mean 1 line would be built in zoom mic and line 2 would be external lav mic . Thanks .
@RogerinFinland3 жыл бұрын
Nope. It's a single track recorder. Even if it's stereo, it's only 1 track: either the XY mic, or the 3.5mm jack but never both simultaneously.

Hey Roger - i'm wondering what your opinion is on this : is the H1N is a decent alternative if i'm firstly looking for a microphone to create an audio track straight to video? The purpose is to record myself singing and playing piano - that feeds directly into my laptop to create the video - with no need to edit. The best microphone for my budget/ needs recommended so far seems to be the Rode-nt USB - but when another friend recommended the H1N i can see it the recorder functionality could be fun/ useful for other projects too. i don't want to compromise on the sound quality though (and also having to use batteries might be a slight additional task if using this as a microphone indoors) Any comments very gratefully received!
@RogerinFinland3 жыл бұрын
I don't have experience with that Rode mic, but I'm quite certain it should have better sound quality than the H1n. That said, the Rode is likely a lot more directional then the XY mic of the H1n, so mic placement needs to be more careful. The H1n is of course also a recorder, and a portable one but that is only useful if you have use for it 😊 The battery power I don't think it's much of a concern. When I use the H1n (or the H5 also) I just use a phone charger plugged to a wall outlet for unlimited power 💪🏻 No sure if this answers your questions, but I tried 😅

@@RogerinFinland many thanks - someone just suggested looking for a second hand H4N so looking at the spec of that - i sometimes make short films, so am drawn to the additional functionality of a sound recorder. in terms of sound quality as a mic, i'm guessing the H4N should be a step up?
@RogerinFinland3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but not dramatic. What is a dramatic step up is the ability to connect XLR microphones and record several (4) tracks at once. Check my review on the H5 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIOrY4R4a7xres0

Thanks for the tips Roger ! Speaking of usb power, is it possible to have H1N powered over usb while it’s in audio interface mode ?
@RogerinFinland3 жыл бұрын
Yep, it just draws power from the computer 👍🏻, pretty neat actually.
@dementorhaze29943 жыл бұрын
@@RogerinFinland Ah I didn’t mention it’s for ios device. When you use it as an audio interface for ios, you must unplug and plug back the cable one time for it to work, and when it connects it automatically uses battery power. Something to be aware of for ios users. Thanks for the reply 🙂

Hey ! Thanks for these hacks. I just wanted to know that can we use zoom H1N to record with microphone like PODMIC as it would have XLR input.
@RogerinFinland4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can record external microphone with the H1n but only 3.5mm input. If you need XLR, then H4n, H5, H6.
@U.Boonmee8 ай бұрын
what usb or cable did you use to connect the Zoom H1n and the camera with?

It's just a 3.5mm TRS to TRS (basically a normal mini jack extension cord)

That was some time ago and a few different setups 😊 Most likely though, 44.1KHz, 16bit wav, and gain depending on the microphone. Not sure if that helps, but it is all I can remember 😊

I have question for you. Can it record audio with its stereo mic and it's input audio at the same time also on separate tracks?
@RogerinFinland Жыл бұрын
Nope. It's a stereo single track recorder. If something is plugged into the 3.5mm jack the built in microphones are disabled.

Can I use AUX cable (3.5 to 3.5) connect to PC. From H1N (line out) to PC (mic in). Will the sound quality be better than using USB directly. Sorry for my English.
@RogerinFinland4 жыл бұрын
No worries, English is not my 1st language either :) To the 1st question, yes you can and from the PC point of view, the H1n will behave like any other microphone. If the PC does have ones of those combo inputs (TRRS) instead of separate mic and phones inputs, there could be some issue or need for adapter. But should be possible. To the 2nd question, I'm not sure which would have better quality without testing. Depending on the use case, using the USB as audio interface might be more complicated.

Excellent tips there. I am interested in getting one so I can record my vocalists voice without taking my monitor, mac mini, keyboard, mouse, audio interface, microphones, cables, etc. etc. - can I load the track we recorded in the DAW so he can listen to it on the H1n with headphones while he records using a shockmount OR should he listen to the track from a cell phone with headphones instead to avoid audio issues? Thanks.
@RogerinFinland4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, interesting question. The only way I believe you could have the vocalist listen to the track while singing in the H1n would be through overdubbing. You'd have to record the track to the H1n, then overdub on top of it while listening to it. I wouldn't recommend it because a) it's very convoluted, and b) you'll record the voice on top on the track and I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that. In short, you'll be better off listening to the track from a different source. I think it's the only option actually... I hope this helped!
