All right. I know Ruyi is kind of a sequel to LoZH, but kind of not. However, if we call Ruyi a sequel, we can figure out why ZH doesn’t want this daughter married off far away besides the obvious. HengChuo would be Longyue, and while ZH loves her oldest, there’s a lot of her life where she was raised by Jing and mother and daughter didn’t really get to bond. *However*, this means that HengTi is her daughter from the set of twins conceived with GuoWong, not the Yongzheng Emperor, and therefore doubly as precious to ZH. If we view Ruyi as the sequel, ZH is fighting to keep what little she has left of GuoWong. 😢

How ironic that Langhua says that a daughter is useless but then moments later, she's trying to keep Jingse from being married off to Mongolia. Of course, Langhua saying no to this marriage could also be because she is only realizing now that Jingse is the last person she has who is not going to backstab her and her going to Mongolia means she is truly alone in the harem (Yuyan is not only not going to speak up for her at this point but is already planning the final push to send the Empress to her grave).

The argument between The Empress Dowager and Langhua is one of my favorite scenes of the entire series and this part 6:26 always takes me out. The Empress Dowager couldn't believe what she was hearing.

For me, the Empress set herself up for failure. She was in on the plans that killed a lot of the Emperor's children making it so that there were only two children to choose from to marry off. If she hadn't stopped the others from having kids then there could have been other girls to marry off instead of her daughter. Also, her daughter doesn't have one ally within the harem. So no one spoke on her behalf in fact they were happy to see her go.

Agreed - the Empress's inability to just let things be is on par with Jia. Jia can't just trust to fortune - she always has to scheme against others.

Oh yeah, the Empress basically did it to herself on this one. Of course, given that the Khorchin Borjigit clan in the show also specified that only the daughters born to the empress will be accepted and marrying Zhen Huan's other daughter off would only grant her maternal clan even more power, which the emperor does not want as he prioritizes his own power in the court over being controlled by his mother, it might have eventually come down to Jingse in the end no matter what happened.

@@SolitaryBee-wd5wf It was implied, I can't quite remember, that Chun's daughter would have been sent but she was only 2 years old. So the Empress really shot herself in the foot here. If anyone at least two ranks below the Empress had a daughter then they could have been sent with some negotiating. But the Empress wanted to be petty and it got her sons murdered and her daughter sent away.

Jingse only knew how to use her titles to tear down others she never knew the responsibility behind them.. She needed a reality check long before the one Ruyi gave her.. and Langhua 😒 still hasn’t learned she can’t play with Zhen Huan.. Zhen Huan is playing chess while Langhua can’t even master checkers.. Also Ruyi’s verbal smack down to the empress is so great Ruyi is so snarky and lays her out without raising her voice; just phenomenal! This should have happened more often

Unfortunately, we see the brat princess again, she helps Wei take down Ruyi, and when she finds out the truth, the damn brat princess didn't even apologize or accept responsibility for her part. I hate her.

I hate her too, but when she realized she sided with the wrong people she immediately backed out and helped bring Yanwan down. She probably still hates Ruyi but what she did is much better than any apology

That specific scene where Ruyi explains to Jingsi what it truly means to be a royal princess and to fulfill their royal duty is so satisfying because Jingsi is such a brat. She's so conceited and arrogant with the way she conducts herself around the palace and her father's consorts. That one line where she says that she's a royal "legitimate princess" and claims that she could do whatever she wanted because of her status is incredibly naive and shortsighted of her. So when Ruyi says it to her plainly how her marriage to the Khorchin tribe would actually do for her and Langhua's clan perfectly slaps her into reality. You could see it in the actress' eyes as the reality dawns on her, which is wonderful acting on the actress' part. Yes I get it, she was only like 15/16, but this was the reality of the time. She should've known what her position in the royal family really entailed. It wasn't just pretty dresses and being constantly doted upon.

JingSe not understanding her role I would say is also (maybe mostly) a failing of her parents, they did not prepare her for the real world at all and were just happy to let her live in her fake world. In the end, the emperor was too much of a coward to even break the news to her himself smh

Also in the book Ruyi never talk with Empress dowager she just sent a note about the "benefits" of the married. I really like these episodes Empress being hypocrite despising her daughter and after that trying to saving her LOL the figth with empress vs empress dowager just saying indirects xD Fucha your end is near.

Ruyi is so intelligent in this episode. I kind of think Ruyi solved a tough solution here. The Empress and the Empress Dowager are in a headlock here and Khorchin needs a bride. Ruyi is siding with the Empress Dowager and making the Empress and Jingse bear the brunt of the decision, it also brought things to a conclusion.

Don't forget the when ruyi and the empress finally face each other it was so satisfying This plan by ruyi was helpful helped to won over the empress dowager and got back on empress but for sadly drama watchers know it wasn't good for long term it will come years later to bite her back can't deny karma got the empress after all she used her position and rules with how it suited her -emperor and empress dowager didn't have a hand in deciding ranks she was the one who made hui noble consort and ruyi consort on the outside it seems the emperor was the one who decided that but he just chose their name(hui,xian,yu) emperor called her out for it but she made many excuses. -used rules to bully shun by taking her son to the princes manor she send her as well but made shun son nannies be way too nice to him which made him become lazy and not smart in front emperor and he's angry and was stressed only ruyi in the novel was there to comfort her even when wants to see her son she have to ask empress and they don't even let her get away with that empress give some annoying lecture and hui is like: you don't trust the empress bla bla bla -she let her lackeys do whatever they want which made everyone else against them (1 prince,shun, yu) remember that one principal who let bullies get away everything as long they look good on outside - she locked up hui and mei in their palaces in the name of recovering with actual care we all know how that fired -of course we all remember her cutting project in the novel her reason was I can't dress up however I like they don't dress up however they like she used for nothing but venting her anger and no one liked it emperor said something she made excuses dowager said something she said ok but still do it that luxury was the consort a way to comfort themselves maybe there would have less problems for her to deal with if she let them be even the servants hated it because they have families to feed sulian her head complained about that to jia

0:11 1:27 Even when I was done with the entire series, this scene always stuck with me… imo, this is Langhua’s worst moment! Even if you think that way, how could you possibly pass this insecurity onto your own daughter?? And to know that she was even more horrible in the novel… This was so cruel (and heartbreaking)!!! I know it’s a show, but it makes me wonder if women during this era really did feel so worthless. 1:08 Wishful thinking considering what the doctor said, but ok girl. Good luck 2:09 Ruyi has a nice poker face during this scene. But honestly, what could you do in this situation? 5:40 the cat fight commences!!! 😾😾 My favorite part during their confrontation was when the ED said that she was gonna add her precious pearl necklace to Jingse’s dowry, but then the empress counters with a, “Oh wow, what a coincidence! I was gonna gift Hengti with my pretty little ducks!” So funny! 😂 5:50 Real desperate move from the ED especially since she knows for sure that the empress has had a hand in sabotaging a couple of the imperial children’s lives 🙄 6:24 that zoom in tho 😂 8:27 damn In regards to Langhua’s amazing 10/10 parenting, I still don’t that excuses Jingse becoming so insufferable. We’re all in charge of how we behave and conduct ourselves.

Again, another move by Ruyi that I did not really care for. I know Jingse is really bratty but what is it happening to her is really sad. She gets along with her husband at first but then after the birth of their first child, her husband became abusive because after such a difficult birth she couldn’t get pregnant again. It doesn’t excuse for behavior later on. And I don’t like her at all but she was just a 15-16 year old child with a mom who only payed attention to her son and a dad is busy he doesn’t have a lot of time for her. Ruyi is so cold in that scene and it really puts me off.

0:30 now that you meention it, that is very true; Fuca Empress does not do Jingse any favors also how are daughters useless; a well beloved daughter will marry off well and can act as a secondary backer they also aren't targets of assassination or a brutal scheme that leaves the mother out of favor precisely because they can't inherit the throne proper besides Fuca Empress is the Empress, she becomes the Empress Dowager (muhou huangtaihou) virtually by default which is above the other Empress Dowager (shenmu huangttaihou)... just pick someone like Chun Guifei to support and keep her under control and keep on top of the schemes (ok easier said than done but still) 4:23 yeah... Fuca Empress has virtually no one XD Jia would probably not help her at all XD Jia is not gonna step in and go to bat for Fuca Empress 5:36 I know right, Shu Pin just can't catch a break; no children, in a rock and hard place with the Empress dowager and the Emperor, and in a scheme happy harem I do feel like She just isn't suited for Harem life since the royal family often must put the power struggles and duty first over love and romance, and she really wants the romance.

i hate jingse so much and i think its really just because i hate filial piety lol. i can't see why she loves her mother when the empress never seems to treat her like she's worth anything. she literally ruins other people's lives just because of the empress and never seems to make any opinions different until late in the series. the only reason i can come up with is chinese filial piety.

i kept going between "poor jingse, her mom doesn't appreciate her because she's just a girl and that's not fair" to "GET IN THE MARRIAGE CARRIAGE FFS go away". it's been a harrowing experience, but i hope the civil war between my (the lowkey misplaced) empathy vs. rational thinking wreaking havoc in my brain will end soon. 😌🙏 my heart is kind of on the empress dowager's side, though. she already had to give up one daughter (let's face it: that's essentially what it was), so being strong-armed into "gifting" her only other daughter just feels unfair. but seriously, empress? that could have been, idk, hui's daughter instead, but you sterilized her. now you're stuck. congratulations, you played yourself.

Nope, they wanted a 'legitimate royal daughter' and consorts don't have legitimate children. The empress dowager had her station raised after her son became the emperor, and her children became legitimized from that.

I didn’t like Ruyi for this at all. Hell, Hailan killed the empresses other damn kid but Jingse is getting the hate? Hailan gets her own karma back at her. Jingse is the emperor’s only daughter at this point in the drama he has bonded over. The only child he can rely 100% to not plot against him like his future sons. She is a brat, but come on. She’s a teenager with the empress as her mother. I doubt most of us would have turned out better with that as our mother. There could have been a potential third option, but I felt they weren’t explored due to the lack of wanting and time this go around. The dowager is so ruthless, she made her potential karma after killing Hui and now is about to loose her other daughter. I did love the back and forth of empress versus empress dowager. I’m wondering why didn’t the empress adopt a kid like the empress dowager has? Chun has so many she can probably just borrow one at this point 😂

Unfortunately Chun's princess is too young even for their standard of marriege age 😂😂😂 and Ruyi is out for petty revenge (she is childless due to Empress' scheming, now it is Empress turns to get her own medicine 👀) In IRL, the emperors in Qing Dynasty sometime do adopted girls from noble families and sent them married off 😅

I will always support hot takes against RuYi because too often main characters get a pass just because they're the main character. But what is it you don't like about Ruyi here? She was tasked with making JingSe understand that she needs to get married, Chun failed (too soft/nice about it) so she laid it out for her. I feel like this is the kind of conversation her mother should have had with her ages ago, or even the emperor. But neither wanted to be the bad guy (to the detriment of JingSe, because like you said most would not have grown up any better growing up under those conditions)

@@dramarecaps4217 Ruyi doesn’t plan well for the future at times. Like when it came to handling A’Rou or Yanwan. Ruyi was very direct and blunt and even gloated this information in front of the empress. Why? To be petty? Having a royal princess as a potential ally who you get along well with can benefit Ruyi. She can get the message across this is hard and she is sorry about it. Same for Yanwan. Imagine if RuYi invited her along to some random teas? Would she have been so quick to plot against her? I don’t think so. Ruyi chooses to be nice to the wrong people at times or extend her gratitude while ignoring potential threats when she could have offered more sympathy.

But at the very least if she had tried, there might have been a chance of a good relationship instead of a guaranteed enemy, you're right. Quite interesting to think about how things would have gone if she had tried to befriend JingSe. Especially since JingSe was getting so little love from her biological mom, she might actually have warmed to having another mother figure. As for Yanwan though, if my significant other treated me the way Yanwan treated YunChe and then you decided to befriend them anyway... We might not be friends anymore 😂
