Drove up to Zi-un for the day from Vegas on March 4th. Left at 2am and it took just over 2.5 hours including a quick stop in La Verkin for coffee and snacks. That 6 hour map estimate must be including Vegas rush hour traffic. :) Drove through the tunnel in the dark, first stop was the Canyon Overlook trailhead, located just beyond the east end of the tunnel by the guard/ranger station. Short hike to an amazing view with the sun rising behind. Lighting and shadows would change every few minutes. Just awesome. If you want an uncrowded Zion, that's the time to go. Bad news was it never got out of the 30's all day and there was an inch of fresh snow in the high elevations. A few people were hiking the Narrows, but they had drysuits. We didn't, so have to go back for that one. A few other hikes we'd like to do too. Great video! Subscribed.

The $5 campground north of Moab was priceless when a freight train passed by shortly after falling asleep for the night. I started paying attention to rail proximity after that..... the tracks are the entrance to the campsites LOL.

Just saw your KZbin about turning off propane. What I do: before I leave on the trip, freeze up blue ice. We also have a refrigerator turned on and plugged into our house electric a few hours before we leave. I put it the frozen blue ice in the refrigerator while we're traveling to the destination. While at the destination, I put it in the freezer of the RV refrigerator to freeze up again. When we're ready to leave, I then take the blue ICE from the freezer of the RV's refrigerator and put it in the refrigerator section to keep it cold because we never keep our Propane on as we travel and not just because it's a law in California but because it's safer. The refrigerator is then just like a cooler! easy, peasy.

In the last ten years, I have done eight road trips through the southwest/western US. Each trip was over 8000 miles. I can’t commit to one state being the most scenic but Utah is definitely right at the top. If you forced me to stay entirely in one state on my trip then I would pick Utah for sure. I bought my first truck just so I could do White Rim Road. The remoteness of the White Rim rd is amazing...100 miles long and I encountered one vehicle. Monument valley at sunset with storms looming is beautiful. Flaming Gorge is another amazing place. The Burr trail from Boulder down to Bullfrog and across on the ferry then following the Moki Dugway off the rim down to Mexican Hat .... and the double oxbow of the San Juan River at Goosenecks State park ...I never even talked about Zion or Bryce Canyon ...looking down on Angels Landing from Observation Point beats the view from the landing itself ... very close to the Utah border is Toroweap Overlook....all by yourself looking straight down 3000 feet at the Colorado river ...Grand Canyon is so narrow here ...all I can do now is pray that our border reopens before summer ... I am 1 hour from the border ...I miss Utah and all four deserts of the southwest ...if you have never seen Big Bend then you should give it a try ...it is out of the way in southwest Texas but even the third time visiting I was awestruck by the sceanary....I really do miss the southwest

We visited Utah on two occasions in 2016, first we did the central and eastern loop going to Capital Reef, Arches and Canyon Lands before heading to Southwest Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before returning home to California in April/May. The second trip was in late September/October coming up from the Petrified Forest and South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon motoring up Utah 89 to an area between Brice and Zion where we used our dingy to good use, thus avoiding the tunnel charges. We then visited Cedar Breaks National Monument, another breath taking vista (breath taking both for the beauty and the elevation at 10,300+ feet), before heading south on 15 for a visit to Death Valley. We have our sticks and bricks home near Sequoia/Kings Canyon and not far from Yosemite, but we enjoyed to beauty of Utah and look forward to the next adventure there.

Actually, Zion shuttles do not run in the winter. Instead, you drive your car inside the park. Note, we were there last November, and they closed the gate into the park by 1PM because all the parking inside the park was full! We've been there every month of the year. January and February were the best, summer is crowded and VERY hot. Beautiful park, our favorite, but the crowds keep getting much bigger. One option is to go to Kolob Canyon area, which is a part of Zion but has a totally separate entrance, and no crowds at all. Its closed right now until late 2018 so check first. Some of the Utah state parks have great camping, hiking, and smaller crowds (like Snow Canyon).

When my wife and I were first at Bryce Canyon, because of all the red rock, I made a slyly disparaging remark that Bryce Canyon was where the cosmetics companies got their red pigment. After that we always referred to Bryce Canyon as the "Max Factor Mountains".

I do love all of your videos. I have seen this one two or three times. I live in CA and now know, when I go to Utah, BRING BEER! And plan for how many days you are going to be there. In Zion we stayed at the Zion RV campground just outside the southern entrance to the park. The shuttle will pick you up right outside the campground and take you to every trailhead in the park...FREE! The park is very clean, with full hook ups and partial hook ups (the best) Get walking sticks and save the ankles and knees on the hikes.

Note about Bryce: there is a small store inside the park and also a slightly bigger one outside the park at Ruby's. Prices are high as everything has to be trucked in. The nearest Walmart or large food store is 100 miles away in Cider City off I-15 or in Richfield off I-70

Fruita: Offers fruit off the trees when in season - pick your own and pay for what you take. Capitol Reef is definitely my favorite National Park anywhere, because no one knows about it, and in the middle of summer, it's several degrees cooler than Moab or Zion. IMO, Zion is one of the most boring national parks around. Zion and Bryce attract lots of foreign visitors, Moab attracts the local 4-wheelers and dirt bikers. La Sal mountains are a nice off-shoot to get a nice forest-desert-mountain view. You are 100% correct -- been to both Grand Canyon and Dead Horse Point State Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park is definitely a better view and better experience than Grand Canyon - another tourist trap. Another nice visit in the area: Cedar Breaks near Cedar City (city is several thousand feet above St. George, so in summer it's still mild temps) - Cedar Breaks is very unique, but not well suited for RV's or travel trailers. October IS peak season for those who know better. It's when the leaves turn colors, so you get the "color country" AND color change of leaves mid-fall and the weather is nice. Find out when St. George holds their annual marathon - I think it's the 1st weekend of October annually. Do yourself a favor and stay FAR, FAR away from the area unless you are running the marathon. Visit the area some other weekend. Las Vegas is 120 miles from St. George -- depending on how crazy you drive, it's a 2-hour drive to St. George. Finally, if you have the time in the area, definitely worth driving down to Monument Valley to see the well-known mittens. If you really tour the area, it's not that far to Mesa Verde National Park, just over the border in Colorado.

I was fortunate enough to live in Moab, Utah for a year when I was in high school. It was amazing. My family all loved it. We did a lot of hiking and sight seeing, then for the summer between my Jr. and Sr. year of high school we spent the whole summer in Escalante and thus got to visit Zion, the Stairs area, Bryce up close and personal several times. I completely agree that Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands are much better than the Grand Canyon. Somehow, we never made it to Capitol Reef and after seeing this video, I realize what a mistake that was. I love Southern Utah...it is spectacular! When my husband retired, we took a long road trip together and Moab was a "must see" destination. After being there a couple of days He told me, well I now understand why I have been hearing about Moab, Utah and Dead Horse Point etc. for over 40 years. We hope to return again.

We visited Utah last summer and loved it! We stayed at the Moab Valley RV park in Moab. Loved it! The red cliffs behind it were amazing. It’s only 1 mile to Arches and almost right next to Colorado River. They had a small pool and a small store plus a laundromat. We stayed at the Zion River Resort by Zion Park in Virgin, Utah. This was a very well kept park with a large pool and hot tub with adult only hours. The price was the highest we paid but it was worth it for our last few days in Utah.

We've been to the Moab area four times, and I still look forward to a return trip! Every time we've taken our atv's, so we've gotten to some of the furthest possible places in the area, and some of my favourite are going to the Puebloan dwellings dotting San Juan County. It's absolutely amazing to see something that has gone on and how they lived so many centuries ago, so I suggest those reading this to Google "Puebloan dwellings in Utah". One of the main problems is for those of us with motorhomes, is one needs to atv's to get to those areas far off the beaten path that few get to, but also having a vehicle is important, for those times you want to tour the other areas that a motorhome or atv can't get you to! So, I just look at it as being so very fortunate to have seen what I have to date, and to look forward to the next adventure!

Bravo!! What a great overview of these parks. We toured the Moab area last summer and you hit all the points that will be helpful to visitors, especially the new ones. We stayed at the Canyonlands RV Park in Moab and I would caution everyone that this is a "tight" park. The owners will tell you that the park was built decades ago when RVs were much smaller. I took out our plumbing system when I didn't swing wide enough. My suggestion is to let one of the park employees assist you in getting to and into your site. That was a $2,000 lesson for me.

I just retired from 32 years teaching high school math and we were planning on doing a lot of travel. For many months we have been researching online for an rv (we were thinking a Class C with a Wrangler as a toad) but watching your videos have us thinking maybe a trailer. A few days ago we stopped at a dealer in Salt Lake to look at the motorhome we were thinking of and within minutes we decided that wouldn't work. We also stopped at the Airstream dealer and my wife has now picked out the model of Airstream we hope to buy in about 9 months to a year and I'm busy looking into a tow vehicle. Since we live in Provo I'm guessing some of our first trips will be to places in this video. It has been many years since we were in Capitol Reef and the last time I was in Zion we were traveling with my parents in my dad's F250 pulling an Argosy (look up some Airstream history to find out what an Argosy was). Since my wife and I haven't owned an rv, more of our trips have been around Moab staying in a tent. I could show you some fun drives if you ever want to come to Moab and rent a Jeep, though I did them in a '97 Dakota and only bent a little bit of sheet metal. Thank you for so many ideas on places to go and information on what it's been like for you to go there.

we just got back from southern UT. We stayed at the KOA in Moab. We had considered renting a trailer tent but glad we did the cabin as it was way too HOT and didn't really cool off at night, so it would of been miserable in a tent trailer or tent. My husband spent a lot of time in his childhood in southern UT. We had been to Bryce and Zions in the past. We have to go back because we did not have a chance to go to the state park or any of the other NP's in the greater area. Also did not go to Lake Powell

As a Southern Utahan, you did a great job showcasing our bits of beauty. There are so many outta the way places in these parks that are worth the visit, and lots less people traffic. If you want any tips, let me know. You should have stayed to see the snow in Bryce....so gorgeous. Also, Panguitch is just about 20-30 minutes away from Bryce and they have a slightly bigger store. ;) Grand Staircase has many hidden treasure, don't skip that park. Cathedral Valley is worth the drive in Capitol reef. The shuttle doesn't run in Zion November-February. But when the shuttle is running, riding your bike into the canyon is #1 way to see it. Hope you get the chance to come back, you just barely scratched the surface.

There is an alternative to the Zion Shuttles; biking the scenic road that follows the river. They rent EBikes for this very reason at the South entrance, but we had our own bikes. The only traffic on this road are the shuttles and they will not pass you until you stop and put a foot down, so it is safe and not congested. We did this is July so it was really hot, but the shuttles are hot also: bring a water bladder for sure. There are alot of You Tube videos on biking Zion.

Darnit, Sean, it's Nuh-vaaaa-da, not Nuh-vaw-da. Loved your beer coverage. It cracks me up. I once had a layover in downtown Salt Lake City and went out to eat. I came across a Brazilian restaurant and thought, cool, I love Brazilian food. I used to do a lot of layovers in Sao Paulo and Rio. So I go in. While looking at the menu I asked to see the wine list. Got to have wine at a churrascaria--except in Utah, evidently. They did have a good selection iced tea, though. Hope you've made it back to Bryce. A sunrise hike there is amazing. When the light hits the inner canyon, it just explodes into color. I first camped there as a scout in 1969 on our way from coastal Georgia to the National Jamboree in northern Idaho. I fell in love with that place, though it was damn cold, even in July. We were cowboy camping, because our scoutmasters didn't want to unload our chartered Trailways. Great episode. Thanks. Great video. Kristy you need a wide brim hat like Sean's when you hike in the desert. Makes a huge difference. Not glamorous I know.

Zion is only a 2 hour drive from Vegas hence part of the reason it is so packed. Our last trip didn't have enough time to go further east than Bryce, but from the looks we need a whole month just for Utah.

I haven't watched all your videos, but love the ones I have watched. I don't know if you have visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, but it is great. Only a very small percentage of visiters to the Grand Canyon ever visit the North Rim. It is almost 8200 feet above sea level so bring warm clothes. The next time you visit Southern Utah I would recommend the stop. It's about a 2 hour drive from Zion National Park. We moved to St George Utah 2 1/2 years ago and love it here.

Thanks much... we've only been to the south rim, so I agree with you completely! Hope we can make it later this year.

The red colorization in the rocks is iron oxide, yes rust. There was a major iron mine just outside of Cedar City for many years.

Just got back from a trip to Utah. It is one of my favorite states. The beauty in each of the parks you mentioned is incredible. In addition, I spent some time up in the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area and at Kodachrome Basin State Park (near Bryce Canyon). Both are worthy of visits. Love your videos - so much good information! Thank you.

Great video. We did this trek one month prior to your Utah national parks. Missed Dead Horse so next time. Absolutely loved Capitol Reef with the Red River, Apple Orchards and fresh fruit pies. Each park so unique and beauty unto its own. Amazing. Loved your description. We also began in Moab. Of course other states before that, like Colorado with the Mesa Verde National Park, one of our most favorites this past fall. 👍🏻👍🏻

love your videos. I have lived here in Utah most oc my life. We love rving around our State. My favorite time to go to Zion is October. Just one suggestion. We say it "zie-un".

Hey Chris, Looking for some suggestion. Caravan vs Class C RV which is more convenient for a family of 2 with 2 kids in total. This is our first trip to Utah and don't intend to do a lot of hiking.

Tropic has a small, but pretty good grocery store. Prices weren't bad. Basic food stuff. I think the name of the place is "Clark's". Good cafe there, too.

Great video! We looped it from Oregon to SLC to Price, then Moab for a few days (Arches CanyonLands & a fun Hummer tour). Then on to Natural Bridges, Capital Reef, Bryce and Zion. Then home on the Extraterrestrial Highway (near Area 51). It was June so yes...temps were high (TOO hot for hiking!). And it was crowded! Bryce and Zion felt like a mall at Christmas time. No thanks.Try Natural Bridges next time you're passing through. And I think you probably drove on Highway 12...how 'bout "Hogsback?!" White knuckle driving for sure. Yikes! Thanks for putting this video together! Great as always.

I've seen 28 of the 60 National Parks, and Zion is my hands-down favorite. Hiking the narrows or climbing to the top of Angel's Landing is an experience of a lifetime. I've seen Bryce from the overlooks but next year we're going full-time and plan to hike it. Thanks for the video, it was informative and entertaining.

Love, love, love Capitol Reef NP. Lots of cool stuff to see in that whole area! Take Hwy 12 from Boulder, UT, to Panquitch, UTH (Red Canyon) for a delightful, scenic drive! If you get a chance and aren't adverse to a little unimproved roads, hit the Burr Trail from Boulder to Waterpocket Fold which is part of Capitol Reef. (PS: The tunnel in Zion is $15.) Can't wait to see more video from Utah.

And don't miss the Hole in the Rock Road outside Escalante. A few slots and of course there's Little Egypt and the Golden Cathedral. And then you have the Cosmic Ashtray. And Lower Calf Creek Falls. The mountain in Boulder on the way to Escalante has spectacular sunsets where you can see 100 miles. Also, when traveling between Boulder and Escalante, take Hell's Backbone (that's the old road). When you get to the top, park and take a look. Pretty scenic, but windy. You will see trees on the cliff edges that have been twisted around and around and around like corkscrews. This is all just off the roads edge or simple hikes for those just passing thru. The area is shockingly overlooked as people try to get to Bryce or Capitol Reef.

Just found your channel last week. I love your videos. We are retired, thinking getting a trailer or 5th wheel. We have done extensive tent camping but as we travel more, we want something that will work better for us. The info you provide is so helpful. Utah is on the top of our list.
