RV Repair: Norcold refrigerator door hinge broken off repair.

Norcold refrigerator plastic door hinge broke off. They wanted almost $200.00 for a replacement door. But I was able to fix it while on the road for $13.00 now you can too.
Note I used a #10 Phillips head screw 1" long with tapered head and I counter sunk the aluminum so head would be flush.

Perfect solution! Thanks so much. I ended up using an 8" piece of 1/8" aluminum (a scrap from an old sign) and drilled 5 holes. Brilliant!

Merci beaucoup, Norcold and Jayco and their Dealers should be so ashame as they knew about this defect for years. You provided with an excellent solution. My Jayco is 2019 with 2 years warranty and the dealer said he doesn't know if my damage will be cover by warranty really a shame.

There is no reason that bottom piece should not be a replacement item.I promise I will not give that company one penny of my money and when it goes out I will put something else in.

Norcold came up with a repair kit for 45$ instead of redesigning their door hinge. Repair kit mimics what you did in video only everything is pre cut and drilled 🤔

Clever solution to a difficult problem. Well done Kevin. Our Dometic RV fridge door broke in the same exact spot a few days ago but, instead of metal, our door’s frame is plastic 😡 You’ve inspired us to fashion a similar brace. Thanks!

Thanks for the clear, articulate repair description. I used double-sided carpet tape to hold the AL piece to bottom of door. I believe it would have held but added screws anyway for extra security. My 2" wide AL strap almost perfectly fit the bottom of my Dometic N611 door. Also, substituted #12 1/2" tapered Phillips since there's only plastic there.

Excellent field engineering Kevin. May even be used to prevent future hinge failure. Removing door while refrigerator is not in use, is my plan to reinforce the inevitable :)

Brilliant solution, Kevin! I'm dealing with the same problem and leaving on vacation in 2 days. I'm so grateful I found your video! I tried JB Weld, but it didn't hold. Do you think this idea would work if you used a smaller piece of aluminum, like just a few inches long instead of going along the entire width of the door? I was thinking of putting in 2 screws in a 2 or 2.5 inch length of aluminum, but I'm not sure if that would hold. For me it's the upper hinge on the freezer door. So, my hinge isn't carrying a lot of weight. What do you think?

I think a smaller piece will work for the freezer door just be mindful of how much weight you put in the door especially out by the door handle , always put the heavy stuff nearer the hinge. But most every Lowes store carries that flat aluminum stock.

I used this www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-3-ft-x-1-5-in-Aluminum-Solid/3030928 and a hack saw to cut down to size of the bottom of the door. Hillman 1-1/2-in x 3-ft Interior/Exterior Mill Finished Aluminum Solid Item #29186Model #11299

Kevin Caudill Hi Kevin. My plastic hinge just broke as I was setting up camp for 2 weeks and I’m about to embark on this repair. Will tin snips work with aluminum?

@@spanielrage That would be hard to do with tin snips if you can buy just a hack saw replacement blade you then could use a pair of vise-grips to hold the blade, or in a pinch if you can scribe a deep groove on one side you can bend and break it at the line.
