You will LOVE being a RV couple. My hubby and I have RV'd for over 30 years and loved every moment. There are days when you might ask, why are we doing this....but, you have so much fun having your "home" with you. Keep looking and don't fall in love with the first rig. There are so many styles, floor plans and when you walk into the perfect one, you will know it feels like home. Also, consider a Class C model. That is our favorite as we have gotten older. LOVE IT!!!

We started camping in our first year of marriage...40 years ago....with a pup tent. As money allowed, we moved up to a cabin tent, a Sears tent on wheels, a pop up, a fifth wheel, and finally a fifth wheel with a full slide. The last camper was bought in 2004 and still serves us well plus has probably been pulled 30k miles....from Florida to Maine and Yellowstone as well. After research, we break even in one night camping as opposed to hotels and eating out. But by the second night, we save money. We can't camp full time but have cherished every minute.

Be cautious! We RV'd full time for 10 years. I suggest you rent an rv for an extended trip. Say 2 weeks, you'll get a taste of living in less than 400 sq. ft. and with very limited storage. Do your homework as to the of vehicle needed to pull the rv safely. The tow vehicle may be able to pull the rv, but can it stop all that weight safely. We had a ball for 10 years and I hope you do too. Just investigate, research and talk to rv'ers. Prayers for you both, keep smiling!!

If I had a hubby who would do the driving I would be all in. But with me being single I wouldn’t even consider driving /hauling one. I think it will be an exciting adventure! Can’t wait to here the next chapter! Good luck in your searches!

Pegi is on that RV shopping high. I know it well, we always get the bunk beds in our trailers, but not the outdoor kitchen, I don’t think we would use it as much as the storage space you loose inside and the xtra cost for it.

I'd wondered about posting 'try camping out of the back of the SUV' but woke to a whole other conversation! A friend of mine loves to travel and decided to get a 5th wheel to expand opportunities (retired couple). With travel restrictions now, it's made a huge difference for them. "See the USA in your Chevrolet" running through my head now.

Hi Pegi and Don, wow, I'm not going with the majority on this one. But that's for me. I only ask that you do the following before making any kind of commitment. 1) Pray! 2) RVing is so much more than the cost of the trailer. Don't forget you need to budget for your nightly/weekly/monthly stays at RV parks. 3) If you get a large RV, make sure you have a proper truck to haul it. Make sure it can haul and STOP! 4) I hope you will rent an RV for a couple of weeks or a month, and see how you really like it. This is not meant to discourage you, go for your dreams! Just some friendly advice to keep your feet planted while dreaming.

We thought about this too. Still considering it at times. We just worry about if one of us gets sick, or disabled when we are older could the other one do it on their own? And what happens when neither one can do it. It’s so much to think about about. Things only get harder as we age. Stinks that we are retired when we are old, and when we are young and able to job more exciting things we are stuck at jobs. Good luck with your decision.

Before you make that big commitment rent a RV for a week or two then decide if it’s for you. Trailers need a vehicle that can tow it, motor homes you might want to tow a small vehicle behind you. We’ve owned quite a few trailers in our married life, ( they were used for our vacations every year! Never ever bought a new one, also didn’t loose money on them when we sold them for one that fit our growing family, (4) and we would do it again now that it’s just the two of us, but for us it’s more about traveling around and exploring then sitting inside to the comforts of home. ❤️💕 it’s great that you walked away to think things through! Sales people are happy to get you into a new toy for only *** a month! 🤣

There are many different layouts and sizes in RV's. The bigger they are, the harder and more stressful they are to pull around. Depends on what kind of camping you want to do. If it's just weekend camping, then you don't need anything too big or fancy. Do you want to travel around and see many many places... then something nimble (i.e. motorhome, camper van, or more ruggid camper). If you plan on setting it up on one place for long term stays, then a larger RV might be worth looking at. I would do lots of homework and research. A lot of people ending up buying the wrong kind of RV for the first time. Have you looked at A-Frame campers? We have a 19.5' campervan, because our goal is to see many different places, park anywhere, go anywhere. So look at what kind of camper you want to be first so determine the kind of RV you should look at.

Last winter, for 3 months we travelled around Florida and stayed in more than 20 different beautiful state park campgrounds, but also truck stops, Cracker Barrels, trail heads etc. We are in our mid fifties and know that life is short. There are so many beautiful places I want to see and explore! We just discovered a love for camping in the past 2 years. If you search youtube you will see that there are so many people that have given up sticks and bricks to travel/live full time in an RV. They follow the nice weather and try to find free boondocking spots as much as possible. Happy research!

My mistake could save you I had a Yukon SLT pulled fine stopped fine on Interstate the thing would about sway us off the interstate.( could not get any faster than 40 mph) So I had to the go out and buy a 2500 problem solved the sway is gone!! Number 1 is safety!! And let the fun begin. Happy travels !

Careful catching the RV bug. 😉 Do your research... warranties, dealerships reputation, is the RV boondock ready, are you both ready. It sounds great but are you willing to change out those gray water tanks? 😉 I would make a his/hers want/need list and his and hers pros/cons list. What do you want or expect from a camper .... research campgrounds across the nations to include Canada and Alaska... some campgrounds are closed for additional 2 more years. So much to consider. Traveling across the country is awesome. Check into insurance premiums and cost of maintaining annually. 💕

Nothing more fun than RV shopping. We knew exactly what we wanted and got a great deal on a 33 ft Forest River V-Lite that is a delight to tow and live in. Here are the things people forget to consider. Where will you keep it? Do not think you just park it in the driveway or backyard. Find out what your zoning laws are. RV's must be on non-dust pads. Your neighbors might complain they do not want to see your RV and mice and other critters will be happy to stay in it all winter without proper preparation. You will have to get special insurance, easily $500 per year. You will want to get the extended warranty which usually requires an annual inspection, so who will perform that if you purchase your unit out-of-town or another state. You do not want the only approved RV shop to be 50 miles away. The warranty may exclude using the trailer as a "residence". You register the unit like a car with sales tax and it goes on your personal property debt. You better also get the Travel Assistance coverage cause a breakdown on the road hauling a trailer is no fun. While your auto insurance might cover damage caused to others by your trailer, it will not repair the trailer itself. Be sure you get the 2 way fridge that runs either propane or electric. Is the vehicle you plan to tow with powerful enough to handle it. Might require special braking system and a special sway bar, and side mirror extensions. Trust me driving across Kansas with a wobbly trailer is a nightmare.
@pegianddon3 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thank you SO much, Randy! We will be adding these to the list. I think that we should wait a month or so while we gather as much information as possible.
@randyromines73643 жыл бұрын
@@pegianddon We were lucky, we looked at trailer options a year before actually buying so knew exactly what we wanted. If you find the Forest River V-lite consider the layout. You saw that one where the bedroom was nothing but bed cramped into a room with tiny hard to access closets. We walk into our bedroom, have a dresser and walk in closet with the bed to the left - awesome. We also got the table chair option, hate a bankett cause my middle does not like sliding around squished between the table and seat. The trailer has a V-nose and is more areodynamic. RV World is a big company, good options. I am in Columbia and we have one right out of town, renamed Gander RV. You should have good options in St Louis, am not sure if you already moved or not. You said you wanted to travel, be aware some campgrounds, especially Federal, have size limits, no big long trailers. I think our 33ft is good any were, I would not want to be pulling anything longer. If you have to get a new truck to pull, diesel is really best but get one you are not afraid to drive Pegi, in an emergency. My hubby got a beast and I refuse to drive it, I do not think I could control it. One option is get the smaller one, get used to it and then upgrade with it as trade in. Find friends who already RV, they will tell you all the tips and tricks and what to avoid! Good luck, hope you will film future shopping trips!

RENT, RENT, RENT FIRST. You won't regret joining us in the rv community, but you will be surprised at what you thought you wanted and needed before and what you actually value once you have gone out a few times. Hi Pegi and Don. My daughter and I am my two small grandchildren wanted to downsize and we bought a nice travel trailer thinking of all the plusses etc. We loved getting out into nature and the boys loved being out running freely and we had a pool at the campgrounds we stayed at. The surprise initially to us was all the things we had to purchase to start off. Lots of money for us as we are on a budget. We found the pipes froze a lot in the winter so we put hand warmers around the outside pipe and it did the trick. My daughter thought of that one. She did all the maintenance and black tank etc. for us. All in all we enjoyed it but we outgrew our space with the boys. If it was just my daughter and I it would have been fine. I loved the one you love Pegi and would purchase in a heartbeat. Best of luck to you both.
