I had this problem, but my water heater had two check valves. I of course changed the wrong one first. I re-plumbed the bypass valve to eleminate the second check valve. Purchased another check valve months later and corrected the plumbing back to normal. My heater had access through the closet, which required sitting in the closet bent over to access the plumbing. I also had to change some fittings out, they were just old plastic parts that had agged due to the heat in that area.

Cheap insurance for sure, I would also keep a couple,e 1/2” pex shark bite caps for emergency’s
