Why is the RV Water Pump Pulsating ON & OFF-THE FIX-Replace Faulty City Water/Tank Fill Valve
In this video I go into detail how to diagnose the problem and a full tear down of the wet bay and show how to replace the City Water / Tank Fill Valve-aka diverter valve-how to replace RV 1/2” PEX water lines with 1/2” cinch clamps, test the entire wet bay water system, some electrical tips for the wet bay utility light and at the end, I cover some other tips about using the RV water pump, an additional check valve you can install as a back up and some safety tips whenever you leave the RV or when you go to bed.
If you have any of the following problems or questions like: Why is my RV freshwater tank filling up on it’s own, why is my water pump coming ON and OFF every couple of minutes, my RV City Water / Tank Fill Valve is not working right, I think my water pump is having problems, I’m not sure if my RV water pump check valve is ok and so on….this video is for you.
Every time we had the city water off and was exclusively using the water pump in the RV, I could hear the water pump come on and go off for just about a second or so and this was happening about every 2 minutes. The pump was ON, but we weren’t turning on any faucets, the shower, flushing the toilet or anything. But you could hear it come on and off in the bedroom or in the bathroom. The water pump would come on and go off on it’s own for about 1 second or so. 2 minutes would pass then it would do it again.
After checking and making sure there was no air in any of the water lines, pump or the water heater, there’s only 3 things that could be causing the water pump to pulsate ON and OFF:
1) There is a small leak somewhere in the RV - I checked everywhere and there was no leaks
2) Water is getting past the city / tank fill valve, or
3) Water is getting past the check valve in the water pump
There’s only two ways the RV fresh water tank can fill itself?
1) Water is getting past the city / tank fill valve
2) Water getting past the check valve in the water pump
To find the new replacement valve on eBay that I used go to ebay and type in: 1/2" PEX x 1/2" PEX Crimp Angle Outlet Stop Valve, 1/4-Turn Ball, LEAD-FREE NSF
So whether we had the RV hooked up to city water or using the water pump and fresh water from the tank, this valve was leaking by the City Water / Tank Fill Valve and filling up the fresh water tank over time. If you only hook up your RV to city water you’d never know this problem is happening because the leak by is silent. But using the pump and fresh water tank, the pump has to work and it will alert you that you have a pressure leaking problem.

We have a Winnie Vista of the same vintage as yours. A couple years ago, I had the same problem, and I shot gunned the check valve, assuming that was the problem. Luckily in my case it was. The check valve is available as a separate item (Shurflo p/n 94-800-03) from the pump. Also, the switches used for the water pump (and elsewhere on the RV) are Carling "Contura II" switches. I broke one of the actuators replacing the light bulb in it. The actuators are available from West Marine (and other boat parts houses) for a reasonable price. BTW, I replaced the incandescent bulbs in the water pump and battery switches with green LEDs that are made to work on 12V (Mouser p/n 593-LTH5MM12VFR4500). The battery switch lamps were very dim, but the super bright LEDs are easy to see, even in direct sunlight.

I am glad you used spade connectors. I had a customer that lost the electric side of water heater. The power cord was connected with wire nuts and one came loose and fried the wire. I used direct crimp connectors and then added additional electric tape to make sure if my crimp fails the wires would not come apart. I tell all my customers to add electric tape to all wire nuts.

Question and an observation: 1) I clicked on your ebay link (having a few of these valves in my work van seems like a great idea), and the seller's ebay item description does say 1/4-turn SHUTOFF (rather than diverter) valve. Is it just mis-labeled on the ebay seller's description? 2) I was laughing (because I live this every day) when you panned back to show the tools you needed to complete this project. I've been a handyman for a long time, and it never ceases to amaze me how many tools I can use for seemingly simple projects. Some folks fail to understand how much of an investment professionals make in even simple hand tools (I recently calculated I have close to $1,000 just in assorted pliers!) that are essential in getting projects completed correctly and in a timely manner.
@RVstreet
@RVstreet Жыл бұрын
No not mis-labeled. These valves go by both names. That is the valve I used though. As far as tools goes, this is why I encourage folks all the time to be building their tool box so when stuff like this comes up you can tackle it. This would of been around a $1,000 job by a RV tech. My cost was $5 (for the valve) + my time. Folks here can do the same thing and put some of that money into tools. thx Darrin 👍 For others that read this comment, here's my Amazon Store and the tools that I use: www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet

Thank you sir! I just had this problem and we never use our fresh water tank the only reason I knew it was leaking is because I keep the drain valve under the trailer open and it was pouring out water. I knew that was bad because we never fill our fresh water tank. I turned the valve off to the pump and it stopped now I just need to replace the value thank you sir!!!!

Another Great video. Just corrected the exact issue on my Baystar. I tried a new pump before the ball valve. The cycling pump and overfill of the fresh water tank drove me nuts. Was a lot easier to sneak the new valve behind and not removing the entire panel on a Newmar.

I think you may have save me a lot of aggravation. I was sure I needed to replace my diverter valve but after isolating the pump like you said, I'm now positive it's the pump which actually will be easier to do. Instead of buying a new valve, a crimping tool, crimping clamps and pex tubing, I just need to replace the pump which looks pretty easy and requires no special tools. Maybe I should have waited to comment until I get and install the pump to be sure I solved the problem but I'm too excited and wanted to thank you now.

Martin, thank you for the great video. I’ve been away from motor coaches, motorhomes, etc. for a number of years. As you went through the video you were answering my questions and taking them off one by one. I have a unique problem though and maybe you’ve had to deal with it in southern Colorado. The water is contaminated with multiple radio logical items. in my little city more like a village we have radium and uranium in the water supply. The city acknowledges it and sends a letter out almost monthly saying don’t drink it. Don’t wash with it don’t cook with it. Well, it’s kind of questionable if you’re not gonna wash with it. So we have to buy all of our water. You answered my question about the reverse osmosis system, but do you know of anything that can remove the radioisotopes that are in the water. I got a feeling as if there is something like that it’s going to be expensive. I recently purchased an older Motor Coach 1998 biild but it only had 108,000 miles on it. I didn’t think that was bad. I’m still waiting for delivery. But I am learning a lot from you and I’m enjoying your style and sense of humor as well. Thank you for the tip and how to navigate your website. ths HBH... Winne DOES provide excellent CS and yes many parts too. I've ordered cabinet facings that were made in 2012. But they don't stock everything and especially parts that can easily be replaced by 3rd party parts like common plumbing parts. Another example, would Winne replace a factory water pump? Maybe but why. They're readily available online from a number of suppliers.

I have this issue but it turns on every 2 hours do you think more than likely this could just be a leak or a dirty diaphragm?

FYI I swapped the pump out with a new one and it fixed the problem I'm guessing it was losing prime.

Only one band-aid. That's pretty good for a plumbing project.

And this a great up grade use a 110 volt home heating and use you home type thermostat and there a couple type clips that hold the heat controller to a bare metal spot because you may have to cut and clean a spot on your water tank. With this style you can’t set your heat of you water tank and not use the RV type with the diodes and there cheap wire. Try it you will love it and I forgot there is a big red button in the middle and that’s a built in breaker which is a extra one. And they are a lot cheaper. 12 bucks for heating element.
