Enjoyed your video. One thing I can add, is when you park always have the front of your car pointing 'out' (so back into your spot) If bad weather or someone try's to break in to your car, you have precious seconds to get started and leave the area and already pointing out and not wasting time backing up and turning around is a game changer. Hope no one ever needs those seconds, but nice to have peace of mind knowing your doing all you can to help if it's needed. Safe travels always :)

Good advice, but I wouldn't have wanted to park that way for this trip and not face those amazing mountain views to wake up too for this particular trip. I am cautious of who and what is around me all the time, but I will never let fear steer me with where and how I camp. Thats just not how I personally choose to live. Being prepared, taking precautions, having the right gear, being mindful of surroundings, is how I choose to roll with my adventures. But I totally respect how others choose to be out there and take precautions that make them feel more safe and prepared. Appreciate your advice. ~RVA~

For states that don't require a front license plate, backing into a space is a fast way to get a knock on your window from a cop. It seems like a no-brainer ip, but can cause more issues than it's worth in some places.

Just a safety note for women - we are under no obligation to be “nice” to strangers. Sometimes women tell people too much about their plans - don’t! A brief hi and keep walking. No need to talk, no need to share details, and keep strangers at arms length.
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. But in my mind, I wouldn't want to hype up a person who may already be agitated. I think it would be a case by case situation as these persons could be potentially irrational and confrontational. I never tell others my plans or post on social media where I am until I get back from the location. I never tell my plans and I always will say others are coming to meet me, etc. I take safety very seriously. I have even pretended to do Instagram and KZbin lives showing the person, their tent and vehicle and gave details outloud so they can hear it. There are lots of things you can do to deter or make others think twice. Having a can of bear spray or bug spray at camp if you car camping is also a great idea. ~RVA~

I car camp alone a lot. Best money I ever spent was for black weathershields for the car windows. Great to crack open windows for when you have to leave pet in car also, which cannot be avoided if you travel with pets. I also hang a used male hi-viz jacket from car side mirror and mens dirty used work boots on car bonnet. Little things that may help re; safety.

Lots of different techniques some people take extra chairs so there’s two chairs outside of the car. Some people do shoes, some people make a clothesline and hang up a men’s shirt. No matter what you choose it doesn’t really matter as long as you feel comfortable and safe.

Dang girl, you and I have a very similar set up. I have been using a 2010 Jeep Patriot as my RV for 11 years. I too use reflectix for window privacy screens and keep stuff cool/warm. I use my backpacking sleeping pad with a yoga mat under it. The dog sleeps on her own mat beside of me. I like that no one can see in, but you can take a peak out if needed. Yes, knife. I also have my SPOTx for communicating with my Dad. I love sleeping in my Jeep, is so much less complicated and comfortable. I do have my "jug" for peeing in the middle of the night. Keeping stealth is one of my main worries as a solo female camper - it's important to check your vehicle from outside, see where light is escaping from and see how visible your set-up is from outside. I went down the route of heavily tinting my rear windows and hanging a shower rail between the front and rear seats - with a blackout blind hung from the shower rail. Great video RVA. I might do a similar one for UK conditions. I'll credit you though - I never take others ideas and pass them off as my own. TFS RVA x

It is absolutely the most helpful to me out of more than 50 car camping videos-mostly by women traveling alone-that I’ve watched thus far. I have two questions: How do you have your lights attached inside your car? I bought two sets of that type of lights but have not yet figured out the best way to attach them. Also, if someone were to try to break into your car when you are sleeping, like rattling door handles to see if any are unlocked, do you have any kind of alarm or siren that might scare them away? Thanks so much and I look forward to the coming weeks of new videos. This one is full of great tips and was so helpful to me!

In this video I just had them strung up, not really pinned. However, I have researched how to hang the mini fairy lights and have found that people use wig pins in the ceiling to keep them up. 2 of them crisscrossed seems to work. I keep my keys at arm's length so I can hit the panic button on my car alarm if needed. I have recently also found on amazon motion senor lights for a great price that if an animal or person comes within a certain distance from the car they will illuminate. I am getting those for sure. I have been car camping, tent camping and back country backpacking. I can say I have never had anyone try to come near my car. Try to remember most theft is in cities with an empty car. Most murders are people the victim knew. (Gabby Petito).. Remember American media likes to try to scare women in particular. Go rebel and see that most people want to get along.
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
@@SinMore I too am a backpacker, long distance hiker, day hiker, 99% of the time I tent camp but I do car camp as well. A lot of solo women just feel safer when they have some sort of protection or are prepared in advance heaven forbid something does happen. I have ran into 2 very scary situations while tent camping with just me and another male at camp and no one else around for miles. I am a huge proponent for women to solo hike and camp and would never try to scare anyone from doing so. Being prepared for various situations that would play out is not only smart but also gives women a piece of mind. I will say just because something hasn't happened to you while out there, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I am very familiar with the Gabby Petitio case, but women get raped and murdered by strangers all the time, not just by people they know. I agree media does try to scare people. I hope it never happens to another living soul but that's not realistic. Taking care of yourself, preparedness, taking precautions, knowing your surroundings is not only being a smart hiker and camper but being a smart woman in general in these times that we live.

AC Ricucci, I'll give you the best safety advice ever. IF you are sleeping in your car & someone is trying to break in, get into the driver's seat as quickly as you can, start & REV your engine, RIP OFF YOUR REFLECTIVES then chase the crims down the street in your car. Take it from me, it's fun watching them SCATTER!! If they go behind your car, reverse - make YOUR CAR YOUR ARMY TANK. The most important thing for us solo women is to STAY SAFE AT ALL TIMES no matter what. There are some real bad people out there. When they pick on me, I scare them SO MUCH that it teaches them a lesson - think twice before you go near a woman's car. Trust me, if they're trying to break into your car, you are dealing with a serious crim. Arm to arm combat is best avoided so USE the car as your armour. Safe travels....

This is the most inexpensive apartment in a relatively safe environment that had availability when I moved back up to NE Indiana. Nothing cheaper without a 2-8 year waiting list. Ah! I hear you guys talking about car camping but I thought it was where you camped (in a tent) but on a family campsite with you car next to your tent. I didn’t realise it meant you actually sleep in your car! That’s neat! We don’t do that over here unless it’s a motorhome or Campervan. Great video! Toasty warm!! Great idea for the black out screens and the reflective insulation. Love it! Happy Hiking 🥾- Julia from the UK 🇬🇧
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 3 жыл бұрын
It's both Julia. Car camping is pulling your car up to a campsite and tenting or sleeping in your car where it's allowed. In National Forests, private lands or campgrounds such as this, you can sleep in your car, just not in National Parks. In the winter a lot of campgrounds are closed, so your access to camping places is limited unless you tent camp. And tent camping in below freezing temps isn't fun for me. I am not a huge fan of the super cold weather. So I came up with this idea to allow me to camp and hike year round even when it's really cold out there. ~RVA~

Thanks for your time in sharing your adventures. I use a simple yoga mat and two nice sleeping bags. Love the cozy idea for your battery power. People that use solar power have said that on cloudy days the solar doesn't work as well. It's also apparently a good plan to have at least two larger batteries that don't run from your car, so that your electronics and cooking gear works properly.

Honestly, I just love car camping it's so simple and nimble before I leave home everything is already set up and all I have to do when I get to camp is crawl in the back if I want to and go to sleep, i have the reflextic and socks for the windows, I also bought 2 insulated curtains and pvc conduit for rods (cut curtains in half and sewed pockets for rod) and I put them behind front seats and back window for extra insulation it works great in Florida it went down into the upper 20's one night. How about a Garmin InReach or something similar for the areas where you have no cell service.

Do you remember the story of princess and the pea? The stacked mats reminded me of that story. The reflectix material is awesome stuff. You can do a lot of cool things with it like cook coozies.

I am that princess, sort of! I am such a light sleeper and can feel everything. If there was a pea under that mattress I would feel it. Most SUV's are slanted so I had to raise up my foot end to be level and it all helps with insulation with the R added r value of the sleeping mats too. Cook pot cozy's, dehydrated meal pouches, mattress pads, you can even put Refletix in your shoes to keep your feet warm. Hundreds of uses for sure! Love that stuff! ~RVA~

I would either spray paint the reflectix black so it just looks like there is a tint, and I think people would be less likely to bother you.

I think it's the silver color that helps heat up the vehicle in the wintertime by catching the light. But if you didn't need it for the cold winter temps like I do and were just using it for privacy, you could paint it. I haven't had an issue with anyone bothering me. It's more about being prepared and knowing what to do if that ever should happen. Thanks for stopping by and for the suggestion. ~RVA~

The window screens and the reflectex, especially if you have a windshield shade in the winter advertises that you are sleeping in your vehicle and it invites curiosity by police and shall we say, less savory characters. Those screens that go over the inside and outside of the door is a particularly dangerous advertisement. Cover the entire outside surface of the reflectix with the black duct tape and that will help reduce how obvious it is you are camping out as well as still being as flexible as you need for you to roll up or be able to bend. Also, get those window deflectors that go over each of your windows so you can roll them down partially and not have rain come in is a great way to hide that the windows are cracked when someone goes by. One other way to help you stay warm is to just get a good old-fashioned hot water bottle with a knitted cover to have inside the sleeping bag with you. One video I saw where they were camping into the negative nopes said that putting it in your armpit was the best way to keep your core temperature warm. The same works in the summer as you can easily put crushed ice in them to help keep you cool.

I'm not really worried about police seeing me because I don't camp anywhere illegally. I stay in dispersed camping /boondocking locations, state and national parks, and hipcamps. I see people use reflectix every day pretty much. Van lifers, SUV campers, people in cars, RV's, its just the standard now. I live near state and a National Park so everybody around here is just use to see that. The black screens are a functional to keep the bugs out. My car is locked, if someone tries to break in while I am sleeping I have means of protection. I have used the Nalgene water bottle methodand it may work well for some but its really not for me. I have a mummy bag and I am a side sleeper. I toss and turn a lot at night and it just gets in the way and keeps me awake. I use a warm sleeping bag liner now. I have one that has a battery that warms up and one that adds 25 degrees to my sleep system. I also have a rechargeable hand warmer that I put inside my sleeping bag as well. I won't let fear of others ever prevent me from getting out there SUV or tent camping. You can take precautions, be smart and listen to your instincts. If something doens't feel right then just leave the area.

I had a black one before this one. The only reason I was able to get this one was the other broke down in another state while I was traveling during covid and there were no mechanics to work on the other one and I needed to get home. So I traded the other one in on this one. I do like the white better than the black. But I have always been a lighter car colored person anyway. Trying to find cars now is expensive. The prices are way up. Its crazy.

I love your setup, but I am thinking of getting some reflectix for my front windshield for summer and put it outside in the winter to help with heat and defrosting. When I get home to US for awhile, I plan on getting a Subaru Outback for car camping and the Pow Wow highway. I plan on drone flying over a river that my Tribes reservation is located for further hydrology studies. Reason for the outback is my husband is 5’10 and I need to make sure he fits when he is with me. You should get a Garmin for when you are in areas that do not have cell service. I do not know what it is called, but it is all over the hiker videos. I do not do any other social media then KZbin, so no private messaging for me! Oh the other thing you need is the hatchback tarp so you have a bit more outdoor area when it rains. Take care and stay safe on the trails

Hey there! How would you attach the reflectix to the outside of the car so it wouldn't blow away, just curious? I've never thought about putting it on the outside of the car, interesting idea. Yes a Garmin is on my list, just wish they weren't so expensive. And then you have to pay for the monthly service too. I wish for safety they were more affordable for people. Thanks a bunch for watching, come back anytime. I love talking all things camping and hiking. ~RVA~

I’ve never gone car camping in my life but now that I have a Jeep Compass and recently moved to Central Virginia I REALLY want to give it a try. The main thing is a fear of all the possible things that could go wrong…what if my car dies on a road where I have no cell phone service? Or get a flat tire and I’m out in the middle of nowhere? Or what if someone realizes I’m a woman traveling alone and tries to break into my car in the middle of the night to harm me? Have you ever experienced any type of scary/emergency situation while out on your own?
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
What if you fall on the sidewalk trip and hit your head? I mean honestly, you can die at home in your sleep or out there doing what you love. I don't live life-based on what-ifs. I am an adventurer at heart and love traveling, hiking, and camping. Being prepared, having the right gear and knowing how to use it ,gives you peace of mind. Worried about no phone service, get a Garmin in reach that has an emergency sos button and allows you to send messages to loved ones. Worried you will get a flat tire, have a spare, and know-how to change it if that happens. People will come along at some point no matter where you are. This video shows what I do for safety - pepper spray and a knife. Get a gun and a permit to carry if that makes you feel better. It's all about what makes you feel safe. Yes, I have had a couple of scary situations, but not while solo car camping but rather solo backpacking and spending the night in my tent. But I handled it and I am still alive to tell about it lol. I have a Podcast episode coming out on April 2nd on Jesters Section Hiker Podcast where we talk about solo fears, how to overcome them, and use them to your advantage out there. Give that a listen if you are interested. Hope this helps ~RVA~
