The next time you visit Deception Pass, do a short hike over to Rosario Head. I promise that you won't be one bit disappointed by the view. Also, if you go on the trail going east from 20 by the bridge, you'll get to Goose Rock, which also offers a good view. That body of water you passed by on the way to the beach is Cranberry Lake and it's freshwater. That small island to the right from the beach is Deception Island. Deception Pass and Oak Harbor area in the Olympic Rain Shadow, which is the dry side of the Olympic Mountains. Oak trees are able to grow here, hence the town's name Oak Harbor. Whidbey is geographically the second longest island in the 48 States and legally the longest. Whidbey has some fantastic state parks, all of them worth visiting. That's the Strait of Juan de Fuca you're looking at from Joseph Whidbey State Park, and you can see the southern part of Vancouver Island straight ahead. That is Mt. Baker to the East (10,781 feet). Yes, it's a bona fide volcano, like Rainier. I definitely recommend paying a visit there. Those are the Olympic Mountains to the SW. I recommend heading up to Hurricane Ridge from Port Angeles. Both you and your drone will LOVE the view!!

Just a little trivia for you. You talked about the bridge you just crossed. There is actually 2. The longer south bridge is Deception pass bridge that spans Deception Pass. The shorter north bridge is Canoe Pass bridge that spans Canoe Pass. Going thru the historic district you passed Perla's which is home of some of the best Philippine cusine. Try their Lumpia. Also you passed the Oak Harbor Tavern. In the 80s you could get a cheap buzz during quarter beer night. I know this as I was stationed at NAS Whidbey from 1982-89. There are 3 major roads in Oak Horbor. Hwy 20, Pioneer and Midway. Since the 80s HWY 20 has had a lot of changes. Pioneer which is one way for a lot of it was a 2 way street. Midway looks like its frozen in time. No real changes to it since I was stationed there. Too bad you missed Flinstone park.

Hello Russ, Ya, Deception State Park is really nice, we used to camp many moons ago there, but haven’t been up that direction for years. That Mountian could be Mt. Baker up north east of Bellingham or if your facing South Mt. Rainier. Thanks for you’re videos...interesting. Russ, one thing I would like to request is if you could stay in the air longer for your Drone shots...would be appreciated. Stay safe enjoy travels 👍😎

Such a bummer that you weren’t able to show the view from the bridge! It’s especially beautiful at sunset. Also, if you ever go back to Anacortes I recommend you stop by Cap Sante (great view of the town & Mt Baker) & My Erie. The view from Mt Erie is breathtaking. The top has a great view of the sunrise and the stop 3/4 of the way up has a beautiful view of the San Juan Islands and being there at sunset is STUNNING.

The mountain your asked about is Mount Baker, a sister to Mount Rainier (only a few of the North Cascade mountains are volcanic, contrary to popular belief. Most are plate tectonic lift). Hi Russ! The mountain in the backdrop is Mt. Baker. It is the most northern of the Cascade mountains. It is east of Bellingham. Mountains south of Mt. Baker would be Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St Helens in Washington, then Mt. Hood is the first mountain in Oregon. Stay safe in your venture south. A few years ago, my sister and I traveled the route from Pt. Angeles to Pt Townsend and across the ferry. I'm sure enjoying this trip with you!! I'll be looking forward to your next video in Pt Townsend. Talk soon!!!

hmmm, i love this place- you drove through and past the north half of the park before crossing the bridge... may have seen the elephant seal that stayed on the bowman bay beach last summer, but know she was staying on a beach near the ferries for two summers restings before going to sea.; and last year she bought a male calf to rest some weeks at bowman bay. this year(2023) i found her resting on the beach by the guemes ferry in anacortes. called eleita may, shes calm and a bit outgoing around humans. but at seven hundred pounds that can bounce as fast as we can run... the beach has been cordoned away from us for now. only lately these seals have returned to the salish seas after fur raiders decimated them long ago. i believe deception pass state park has the highest useage and most camp sites of the state parks in washngton. the bridge itself is an internationally sought vista and ive seen a gray whale once and an airplane go under me twice when on i was there different days. nice fishing for lingcod on a slack tide below the bridge until a log boom floats at you pushed by the 'pull and be damned' tug boat.. it takes up the hole pass and slack tide duration so we give way. whale watching boats track the orca etc daily west of that park.
