That's pretty cool how they engineered that. No power required...awesome. I'm going to tuck that idea away for future reference. Thanks!

Yeah! Don’t you think we could figure out a way to capitalize on this with RVs.... without driving our rigs up & down the same hill over and over again?

I love how Canadians take the KISS principle and tell it to go screw itself lol. I agree with the previous poster in that this is ridiculously cool. You have my vote for more videos like these!

We live about an hour away and our one daughter goes to college in Peterborough ...it is a very cool engineering marvel indeed and a very neat story behind it as well(kinda sad too at the same time)...I will say this I never realized it wasn't powered and used the weight the way it does....learn something new every day lol Safe Travels

My hometown! I was shocked to see this on your site guys! Thanks for sharing. I feel Ike I just went home!! Lots to do there! Enjoy the fall colours! Every spring they stock the water below the lift with trout and have a kids weekend fishing derby. In the winter they drain it most of the way and it's a hockey / skating venue.

Old, elegant, and still functioning. I wonder how much maintenance is involved? Here in the States, our infrastructure doesn't seem to hold up that long. So interesting to see - perfect for a Tuesday elementary school auditorium showing. ;=)

This is exactly what I needed to see. If I had been there in person, I would not have got this much. Of course, actually being there would be a different type of experience; but what I mean is that this video shows everything one is curious to know about something as spectacular as this lock.

I caught my first musky on those waters, Buckhorn also has the best ice cream at the lift locks. There is also a free zoo in the city, with a water pad for the kids and a train ride for kids.

I don't understand the use case of this? Maybe so that not much power is required for ship to go uphill a river? Wow, that is impressive engineering. Really great video. Kudos to you :)

What's amazing about the Lift Lock is that is requires no power to raise and lower the caissons. It's all done by gravity. They fill the upper chamber one foot higher with water than the lower chamber. The weight of that extra water makes the upper chamber begin to lower down, and its weight forces the lower chamber to move upward. It's brilliant, and allows the lock to raise and lower boats a LOT in just one lock.

@RVgeeks

The lock is pretty close to silent, and the campground is a little ways away, so it would be impossible to hear it. It’s definitely not close enough to see either, but not a terribly far walk.

No power? Amazing. Can you navigate the whole canal with no power? Hypothetically, could you navigate the canal/ the locks on your own?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 жыл бұрын
We're not certain, but we think there may be other locks that may require power. One thing we ARE sure of is that you can't operate the locks yourself, as we did in England.

I was Homeless for a Year in Peterborough, there are alot of issues with that city. Shelters contain alot of drug users, tatoos, previously convicted, bueratistic and dogmatic abuse. I didnt like it. I plan on vesseling to avert continued destitution from Canada Ontario. I (SciVegan, aka taboosaboo kcpm) call it My SciVessel, My gateway to a Vegan and Scientific path of independent living.

It would have been "nice" [as it were] to have been able to see the lock in action, without the intrusive text on top of it, and without interrupting it, just as it gets started, to cut to video [video?] of a SIGN, telling us where we are. How about a [very, VERY] BRIEF explanation at the beginning, and then some [UNINTERRUPTED] time-lapse video --- with ***ZERO*** narration?

It would have been “nice” [as it were] if you made your own video, rather than making an intrusive comment.
