Very comprehensive video! Just finishing up 32 years as an LEO and your due diligence in checking a firearm repeatedly in your video I hope rings true for a lot of people. I work in a rather large city with 400 officers and the one thing that people need to understand is that the majority of guns will fire with the magazine removed. I don’t know how many accidentals I’ve been to because people thought their gun was unloaded because they popped the magazine. Thanks for doing such a comprehensive video!

Great Video. Good refresher for anyone to watch. Treat all firearms as loaded!! I tell my kids that for a reason. They know that rule very well. I have seen in real life what happens when someone doesn't take into consideration what is behind the target. I have been on the receiving end of that from neighbors not looking beyond the target. Like isn't that a house behind the target!!! narrowly missed getting him the head while in my own yard. There is a distinct sound of a bullet flying past your ear, you will never forget, let alone 3 of them.

Great instruction, as a former military instructor we don’t like to use the term accidental ( gives people the feeling that people are forgiven for accidents) better term is negligent , instills the fact of consequences!

When I took over as Firearms Instructor in my department, the prior trainer had trained and requested the officers consider carrying with NO round in the chamber. I began the first yearly qualification with a "game". I put out 6 blocks with numbers 1 thru 6. There were 6 targets. The officer chose 3 blocks (which were turned over) and shot at the targets they had selected while timed. EVERY officer who carried without a round in the chamber fired on the empty chamber. They then had to load the chamber to continue. I used this to show them how in a stressful situation they would forget to load their gun. There were 6 officers who were carrying this way. The next year only one officer still carried that way. Thankfully he was not on patrol.

Excellent advise. When our LE Department transitioned from wheel guns in 1985, we all had to attend a 40 hour auto transition school and shot close to 500 rounds. As you know instructor schools I have sent my trainers to, we sent them with over 5000 rounds each. Now that is a lotta brass. Most CCW classes are about 8 hours and proof of 70% live shooting score. If you're not in the business or have retired from the business, you really need at least 300 to 500 rounds to get comfortable. Don't short your time in training, because you will pay for it one way or the other. Thank for the good advise.

Thanks Izzy for this video. My military training (11B) taught me to maintain my situational awareness at all times. As a recently retired DHS/TSA employee it was my giving briefings on Active Shooter scenarios to employees for years that I realized that Run-Hide-Fight could happen at anytime, anywhere to anyone and one must be mentally, emotionally, physically ready to protect themselves. Thanks for your video.

Izzy thank you. (You too MJ.) LE kid here. Both parents carried, and I was totally raised in a fully stocked home. I was taught every single thing you went over (minus the laser trainer,) from the time I was very young. It’s so good to see you go over this material again. Pity we can’t carry those larger magazines where we currently live. I decided a few weeks ago to go back for a refresher class at the Range next to an RV park we go to regularly. Keep doing these videos please.

Thank you so much for an excellent briefing for different types of firearms to carry in an R V or other vehicle!!! With what the current Administration has done to our country, I believe as one former Navy SEAL stated “It is our duty as an American Patriot to be trained, armed and ready to defend and protect ourselves and others against any deadly threats from someone who might want to harm others”!!!! Anyone who has carried an M-16 or AR-15 on duty will HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE AR-15 FOR SELF AND HOME DEFENSE!!!!! Only those who clearly do NOT understand the AR-15 are those who fear it and want to make it unlawful to own. They don’t seem to understand the criminals will still have guns which have been banned or outlawed because criminals DO NOT OBEY THE LAWS!!!!! This is why the cities and States with the most strict gun control laws are the places which have the highest number of criminals using guns illegally!!!! Gun Control Laws mean absolutely nothing to criminals because only the Law abiding people will obey the laws. It is time to vote new politicians into office , who realize the reality is we don’t need more gun laws. We need to make it so the criminals cannot be arrested and back on the streets within the same day!!!! Just saying.

Another retired LEO and firearms instructor who’s still working a little bit. RVing sounds interesting but I’m not ready to take the plunge. Great info on selecting a gun you can carry comfortably for 12 hours. Good gun leather really helps. Lot of people, even in LE don’t understand that, especially in light of the better more comfortable wearing right also cost as much as their cable each month.

Two items not discussed, carry the proper weapon for the perceived threat and conditions. My camping and hiking area is the outdoors of Alaska where people are less likely to be a threat then animal life. Elemental consideration is something else to think about. I open carry a 44 revolver because I find them more reliable in changing weather conditions and the caliber size is better suited to stop an animal threat. Great video, thanks!

Thank you for the great video! One additional thing to be careful of, after you check and verify an empty firearm at slide lock, is to be sure NOT to put a loaded mag back in the gun and release the slide. You put a "dummy" round back in the gun at 21:24 of the video, after clearing the gun. I know of many people, especially new guns owners, who have accidentally "reloaded" their firearm after "showing clear", by releasing the slide on a loaded mag.

I was also law enforcement, 20 plus years as a reserve deputy on the sheriff's department and the most important thing is practice, practice, practice. Also have a good level head and a good moral compass. There is no death penalty for theft so why would you kill someone for stealing a inanimate object. Unless there is a legimate threat to your or someone elses life do not shoot someone because they are stealing your stuff. Thanks Izzy!

Well done, being a retired LEO myself, transitioning to a civilian life has been a big difference (as you will see soon). But this was some of the best info out there I have seen. I always am hestitant to give out this info for fear it can be used for nafarious means. Being a responsible gun owner and user is the key. I am hopeful this will help those that want to do the right thing. Please be responsible and guns are no joke and just having one wont guarantee your safety. Remember, in everything thing you encounter or are present where you are armed, there is a gun in that situation, and ITS YOURS. Be careful, always informed, and properly trained. Stay safe!!

Great video Izzy !! On duty I carry the Glock 19 or 17, off duty I carry the Glock 43X, always a round in the chamber. I carry outside the waistband concealed by clothing. It was a great point about the belt, a cheap belt will just cause issues. I use the NEXT Belt both on duty and off. Reinforced/rigid belt, and it's ratchet design so I can adjust it when I eat too much... LOL !! Good move going over the 4 firearm safety rules, many many people screw up the 1st one. Love the laser trainer, great option. Thanks for sharing.

Great video. I have a Concealed Weapons Permit and the training is excellent. My wife was hesitant about having a weapon in the house so I suggest that she should go through the class, not to get a permit but to just go through it. She did and was very surprised. My has her Concealed Weapons Permit now and is excellent at the range. I think more people should go through the course, not to get a permit but to understand more about gun safety. Thank you for the great video.

Incredible video! One of my business ventures was starting a firearms related company several years ago that I sold ~6.5 years ago... I wish you would have made this video way back then because I would have made every customer of ours watch it. The entire first part is absolutely dead on - if your drinking keep the firearm as far away as possible... and NEVER put yourself in a situation that you might need to use the firearm!!! Also, couldn't agree more with the tough man comments... I couldn't tell you how many times I heard the same stuff.... makes you really shake your head doesn't it? Again - one of the best videos I have seen on this topic. Also, something that might be added - many states are now constitutional carry - like my own state of GA... that does not mean that I can carry in another state... always check which states you can carry in and can't carry in... in GA I don't need to have my Concealed Carry Permit any more, but I still need to get my license if I want to visit LA... or let's say we were going to travel from GA to AZ, we have to pass through NV... well NV does not acknowledge GA's concealed carry permit... so, make sure you know which state's are constitutional carry, which require permits, and which accepts your state's permit....

Great video! Did not know you are "on the job" I am currently in my 34th year, retired from patrol and now work as a school resource officer. Spent most of my career running the training and firearms unit, active shooter instructor etc.. all while supervisor of patrol and your spot on with your stuff here. Had not seen part 1 but will go back and check it out. I think the biggest mistake people make with firearms is thinking " I have a gun I'm safe, bad guy will run away" Like you said gun is a tool, if you don't practice and are not prepared to use it when all options are exhausted it is no more helpful then a pair of pliers. Bad guys aren’t afraid of guns automatically, they may have their own, so just having it is not enough, train be proficient and be mentally prepared to use it if your life or family members life depends on it. Unfortunately we did not run into you guys this year in Tampa as we were trying to shoot content for our channel (life of a KZbinr) but hopefully our paths will cross.. TJ & Red @Lovinglifehitchedup

Well done, Izzy - great introduction to firearm safety and appreciation of some of the basics. Of course it takes hundreds of hours to become proficient in a static environment, let alone when under pressure. Then there's there's the myriad of firearm laws and jurisdictional issues, thoroughly understand the laws of self-defense (#14 below), understand the legal system and process, financial liability and legal retainer/insurance, etc. In addition to being street smart, firearm owners should be very clear on self defense fundamental objectives: #1 Prime directive: Avoid being killed, #2 Shoot to stop threat (never to kill), #3 Survive fight w/o serious injury, #4 Avoid going to the fight if "Not my Circus, Not my Monkey", (avoid the "Four Stupids" - Stupid Places, Stupid People, Stupid Activities, Stupid Times) #5 Avoid being instigator (maintain innocence), #6 Distance buys you time, Time buys you options; Cover, Concealment and Communications are often your best friend, #7 Watch adversarial hands, eyes, gestures, #8 Avoid confrontation, #9 Avoid potentially deadly fight over personal property (and be aware that legally, pets are personal property) #10 Avoid excessive use of force, #11 Avoid brandishing (except reasonable printing), #12 Avoid being unnecessarily arrested, #13 Even in your Castle, differentiate your Can/Should/Must to avoid death or serious bodily injury, #14 Five required elements of self defense: Innocence, Imminence, Proportionality, Avoidance, Reasonableness, #15 Or considering the threat, at a given moment, does the assailant have: Opportunity & Ability, are you in Jeopardy, #16 Practice memorizing details of importance: site, people, situation, details, #17 Rehearse/memorize what to say when you immediately are the FIRST to call 911 and contact your lawyer...

May I suggest carrying a nonlethal, but very effective, "non-firearm" like a Byrna SD. They fire 0.68 caliber balls that inflict significant pain or balls filled with pepper material and/or tear gas. Effective ranges is about 60 feet; some have demonstrated up to 80 feet, so you don't have to get close to, or allow the "bad guy" to get close to you before you can "dissuade" him.

Great video and really solid advice on all points. I would only add that in addition to avoiding those potentially lethal confrontations at all costs, it is great to give yourself another choice before the gun. In addition to having a multi-state concealed carry permit, I also carry a good quality OC spray at all times. Not only is it generally legal every where, it is easier to conceal than a firearm and also gives you a last-chance option before being forced to use your firearm. My personal choice is the POM products and, much the same as with a firearm, I get their "practice canisters" so you can try spraying without accidentally exposing yourself or others to the really harsh after-effects of OC spray.
@CaliforniaTravelVideos
@CaliforniaTravelVideos Жыл бұрын
Good for you, Pete. The FBI records show 80% of assaults are non-deadly, thus not warranting defensive use of a deadly weapon. Thus, OC is very useful tool to have in such situations. BTW, since the lifespan of OC is 2-4 years, when it's at the end of the OC's useful life, be sure to buy fresh canisters and consider discharging the old OC spray downwind as a practice exercise.

Great video and really appreciate the information, especially the 4th rule. I've always been concerned about defending myself and family in my RV. Similar to a stick built home situation, I always consider the various situations that could lead to use of my firearm and more importantly what is beyond the target or "threat". Different than an traditional home, an RV's construction is such that it is unlikely to significantly decrease a bullets velocity or deflect its trajectory. In other words, if the target is missed, the round is likely to pass outside your RV and given the proximity of RVs in most campgrounds, its possible to impact another RV and cause damage and possible injury. Always...Always consider what is beyond your target before firing that round. If you have any suggestions on this topic, please share in a future video. Thanks again for taking on this topic and offering very common sense advice.

I worked in LEO for 30 years. We carried Glock 17. In NC a person can carry a gun concealed into a bar if they have a CCW permit as long as they are not drinking. The bar can put a sign on the door saying no guns allowed. Know if your gun will fire with the magazine out. Some will some want. Glock 17 will. Good video

All good points. Each of us is different. I'm strictly a revolver man. Why? I'm nearly 80, my Charter Arms Bulldog has been by my side for decades and macular degeneration has taken my "shooting" eye. Many, many rounds have gone downrange from this Bulldog and not once has it failed to go "bang". Squibs have occurred and they don't matter because the cylinder rotates. One feature the Bulldog has is a bar that covers the primer until the trigger is fully back. No striker, no fire. Four rules, training, maintenance, yes x2.

Yes, I know "the day you use your gun is the day you lose your gun": So for me, I know to avoid using my firearms in almost all situations. Yes, I generally vote Democrat (although you didn't ask, but most non-gun people have the idea that non-law enforcement gun owners are all second amendment nuts who always vote conservative). All good information. As a retired LEO I had gone to the range 3-4 times a year minimum. We did regular qualifications and then we would do stress firing, trying to create real world stuff. In these stress firings we might have had loaded intermittent dummy rounds, can’t use your strong arm because it became disabled, reloading with only one hand, etc, etc. if your doubting yourself, get pepper spray. Way less liability if you “miss judge” something or are not willing to stay proficient.

Thank you for this video. I have been carrying concealed for 40+ years. Twice I had a suspected car jacker come up to my car. I had it out, but didn't have to point at the person. I was able to pull away both times when they grabbed my car door handle. Once I needed it for a home intruder, and again didn't need to discharge my firearm, even though he had two guns on him. I was able to hold him until the police got to my home, and he was arrested. I hope I never have to use my firearm, but I am prepared to squeeze the trigger if my life or my family's life are in extreme danger. The State Policeman asked why I didn't shoot him, and I stated I didn't feel life threatened as long as I knew where his hands were. I said if he had lowered his hands, and reaching I would have shot.

Great video and glad to see you putting this content on your channel. Everything you discussed is spot on for the responsible gun owner. Your multiple comments on getting training cannot be stated enough. Going to a class or the range once does NOT make you an expert. Take a class every year and go to a range as often as you can to practice the skills learned in those classes, shooting is a perishable skill. Above all, use your head and lose the ego. Be safe..

All your tips were spot on. If you do another similar presentation in the future, please include the following: 1. Where do you store/secure your weapon in an RV 2. What tips or suggestions do you have for the increasing number of solo women RVers (ex. Most don’t wear belts, so need special holsters or purses), 3 reminder that ever State has different open or concealed carry laws-check before you travel. Again thanks for the presentation

Appreciate this video and great timing as we are taking an Introduction to gun ownership class this Saturday. Working with a licensed private instructor that will prepare us for gun ownership and help us get certified for conceal carry. Will also let us practice with several types of guns so we can decide which is best for us. Thanks Izzy and yes, keep these videos coming!

Great video! Being a former law enforcement person, you practice, train, practice, train, till everything you pointed out becomes second nature. Every time I pick up even my own firearm I just put down, it is just habit to check that firearm, keep the muzzle in a safe direction.

Izzy, I want to thank you immensely for this video! I'm going to be new to RV'ing later this year and this topic is of great importance. I am a Ccl carrier and wanted to know more about traveling with my firearms. This video is very informative and as you stated, I'm training and will be taking lessons on this topic. You make great points about practicing with your main carry weapon. I want to see part one of your of this series to get the picture. Really good topic because there are a lot of new shooters, including myself! I take this very serious because safety is of the utmost importance. Thank you much!!!

Great advice!!! I legally CC everyday but once I crack open that first drink it gets locked in my safe. Camping sitting at the campfire, it gets locked in my safe in the camper!! Alcohol and firearms do not mix. My wife and I do not go to bars anymore, but if we did I sure as hell would not bring my EDC. M&P Shield 40 (3.1" barrel), can break it down and put it together blind folded. Hit the range once a month, center mass from 15 yards. Have been training for 20 years and continue to train (paid classes).

Reconsider your revolver advice. I think if we were sitting around a campfire I could change your mind. Remember you talking to campers (some elderly) trying to protect themselves and loved ones. 3 Things I would have stressed, "I feared for my life" / Muzzle discipline / and keeping your booger pickers off the bang bang switch. LOVE your weapon choices, you damn yankees can afford nicer toys then your southern brothers in blue . 😁 Keep up the great work ! *A shout out, to all those still serving our communities, we are extremely lucky to have men and woman who are still willing to take up the good fight. Please stay safe.

Great video sir. Informative for the new shooter and the veteran. We travel full time in our rv. We have a small armory in the rv due to the many recreational and hunting related activities we do. Do to the crazy world we live in we also try to stay vigilant when it comes to our safety. We just left Virginia Charlottesville area where they had the police order the camp ground to shelter in place. It was due to a gunman on the loose. Very sobering experience.

Yep, good and accurate information. I would also recommend to people who carry a firearm to watch some of the attorney videos out there to get advice from attorneys who specialize in self defense cases. USCCA has their own KZbin channel. Many of those videos are authoritative in terms of what a person can expect if they are involved in what is believed to be a clear self defense case, but ends up in criminal charges brought against the firearms carrier. Once a person decides to carry a firearm, there is much to learn in order to steer clear of potential criminal liability. The "tough guy" comments you mentioned, those are the guys that should NOT be listened to. They are the first ones who will end up in a legal quagmire.

Ammo selection: In selecting practice ammo and defensive ammo, my policy is to choose a practice ammo that's a little heavier weight than my defensive ammo. Heavier ammo means stronger recoil, all other things being equal. It's the same principle as wearing angle weights when practicing for a race so that, when running the actual race, you feel lighter and stronger. If you have less recoil in a stressful situation than when you practice, that will make the situation a little more manageable with easier follow-up shots if necessary. Great tips!

Excellent Izzy! All in I am. I’m a very avid rv’ers and ex military whom used my weapon In conflict and obey all gun laws federally and the state I live in. Also conceal and carry I do. When we travel I check on the states we run in for laws concerning concealed and carry and so forth. I don’t hunt but am an avid target shooter including high powered rifles as big as .50 caliber. I as well never want to use my weapons to protect myself family or a dire strait situation but do have them all. God bless and see ya out there having fun!

Good vid, especially for RV’s in these times. Where comfortable shoes, retreat is possible. Deescalate if possible but #1, don’t find yourself in the wrong place and time (if possible). One in the chamber, always. I’m the safety.
