Love the section about tools. People who haven't had a background of working on things just don't realize how easily they can save themselves thousands of dollars just by having a few tools and someone who is willing to help guide them through an easy repair. Most fellow rv'ers are willing to help out others who need a hand. Kudos to you for making this series of videos. Thank you.

as always Martin you did an amazing job. always sound thought out advice. I am a far far cry from being mechanically inclined but you inspired me to try and replace the fuel pump and filter on my onan 4000 generator. Happy to report it is running like a champ now. Probably would have taken you an hour but took me like 5 and I had tools everywhere but it was unbelievably rewarding - keep it up. Very motivating

Regarding the drill, I got a tip from “My RV Works” that was useful. Consider buying a 12 volt drill. That way if you are troubleshooting an electrical problem and need a handy source of 12 volts you can you can remove the battery and use a set of small jumper wires you have previously made inserted into the terminals on the battery as a 12 volt power source which will save you time and steps while diagnosing the problem. Thanks for all your support! John Johnson.

Another great video full of good info. Something else for the tool bag that comes in handy and can save an afternoon of being hands-and-knees combing through the grass to find that #4 screw is a magnetic parts bowl and an empty plastic bin to put parts in as you take them off. Don't ask how I know that. It's another good reason to have a decent assortment of extra screws and bolts.
@RVstreet4 жыл бұрын
Magnetic parts bowl. Yep I have one of those too. Just didn't mention it. If I went thru everything I had in tool bay the video would be to long and no one would watch it. But ya good tip Otis. 👍

If you haven't already done one another one of these must have videos about tire changing and tire fixing would be helpful. We are talking proper jacks and how to properly jack up and change a tire when needed. We're talking emergency repair of a tire when needed. We are talking having an actual good spare or more. We are also talking flares or other safety indicators (and reflective vests) and how to deploy them to help other motorists keep from running into you when you are dealing with a tire emergency roadside. Additional must have items I would think should also include fire extinguishers, in strategic locations. Not just one, but one in each strategic location where they may need to be accessed in a hurry, including within reach of the driver. Fire escapes from each sleeping area and plans and practice for how to actually get out of them. Basic roof repair items to address leaks and tears or damage if tree branches come down on the roof during wind. Thank you for doing these! This is a very good series of videos. Oh, and first aid and CPR training would be highly advisable. Trauma training wouldn't be a bad idea either, but that can be a little more intense and is harder to come by. The basics of first aid and CPR can be very important, and it isn't enough to take those classes just once. Periodic refresher courses help cement it in your head so you are more likely to remember and act should the occasion arise instead of freezing up and trying to think what to do.
@RVstreet3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Anne 👍 When you have a big rig like ours you don't carry a spare. To big, to heavy, takes up to much room and the lug nuts are torqued to 450' lbs. You simply have roadside service like Coach-net. Covering deploying emergency visual items though would be good. I have covered fire extinguishers before. Here's my playlists page JIC you haven't seen that yet. kzbin.infoplaylists Haven't covered Fire escapes yet but have thought about it. MAYBE.....in the future. I have covered fiberglass roof maintenance and leaks but not tears or emergency repairs. However I do briefly cover it on my next video coming out this Sunday evening. In closing, after running a YT channel now for quite some time you get a feel for what people really want to see. I've done many videos in the past that I thought would be well received but fell flat. No since in doing videos that nobody will watch. So deciding what subjects to cover can be tricky. It takes a lot of thought, planning, time and editing to just do one video, but I will keep your suggestions under advisement. 💗

Regarding the water softener. To get an accurate reading on total water hardness, you should do a "drop test". Those test papters are only an indication of a range of hardness. Plus, the test paper indicators are time sensitive (they have a shelf life) also the test papers are temperature affected. They need to be kept in a cool /dry space. Proper "recharging" depends on the incoming water hardness. A water supply say of 25 grains uses up the capacity of the resin three times faster than water hardness of 7 grains hardness. So depending on the amount of resin inside the resin tank will depend on the time frequency of the regeneration. Plus, resin has a shelf life as well. One should want to talk to a water softener professional in their area to get the full story. However your statememts regarding the need to have a water softener is right on. With todays new water heaters (on demand), they will "scale up" much faster than a conventional tank style water heater.

NOTE: I meant to say this water softener will supply you 1,600gal. not 16,000gal. between recharges. SORRY! *Concerning buying the water softener and the regeneration process* There are two ways to buy a water softener through my Channel: 1) The On-The-Go water softener through my Amazon Store in the “ Everything Water and Sewer” category. My awesome brass quick disconnects are also in this category. The quick disconnects sell out quickly-before they restock-so be sure to buy what you need when they become available. www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet 2) The “Essential Portable RV Water Softener” through my fantastic, family owned water source company that I’ve been with for years. It’s the exact same water softener as the On-The-Go water softener, just with their name brand on it. This company carries all my wet bay water gear. www.rvwaterfilterstore.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Affiliate=RVstreet 💗ONCE YOU CLICK THE LINK ABOVE, TYPE IN THE FOLLOWING PART NUMBERS IN THE SEARCH BOX and then put them in the cart and check out. These part numbers BELOW will give you the exact same system I have. • For the 16,000 grain Water Softener (that will supply you approx. 1,600 gallons between recharging which is simple to do) just type in the the search box-Water Softener-and then you'll see the Essential RV Water Softener Portable 16,000 Grain w/Custom Hose. • For my Watts Water Regulator, type in the search box-Watts 263A-LF with gauge • For the Dual Water Filter Canisters with mount, you want to get the Essential Whole RV Water Filter System with Bracket. You’ll receive (2) 10” Sedi Filters and (1) .5 Micron Carbon Filter. So type in the search box-Essential Whole RV Water Filter System with Bracket • For extra .5 Carbon Filters which you are going to need, type in the search box-F1Pb CFB PB10 10" Carbon Filter Cartridge-. They are only sold in single packs but normally last up to twice as long as the Sedi Filters • For extra Sedi filters, type in the search box-RV-SED1 cartridge, 10", 2-pk • For custom made to length hoses, type in the search box-Hoses-and then click-Hoses, custom Built for you-.Then order what you need. NOTE: This is a fantastic system and you'll no longer have to worry about your RV water from the city or in your fresh water tank. It will be safe, great tasting water throughout your RV and all your plumbing and appliances will be protected too from harsh calcium deposits that can wreak havoc in your RV. If you need help, you can call them @ 602-625-1875 ask for Brad and be sure you tell them that RVstreet sent you. *To regenerate the water softener here’s my best practice I’ve developed over the years to make sure your water softener is MARTINIZED* 😝 1) Turn OFF city water 2) Do a back flush for 10 minutes with city water at full pressure 3) Turn OFF city water 4) Remove main cap and stem assembly 5) Add 2 full 26 oz. boxes of iodized/non-iodized salt 6) 2-4 teaspoons of powdered Super Iron Out, depending on the hardness of the water in your area 7) Stir these ingredients into the resin using the stem of the head assembly 8) Rinse the under side of the cap and stem assembly AND the threads on the water softener to be sure they are totally clean (so the cap will seal properly) then screw the main cap and stem assembly onto the water softener 9) Let it sit for 1 hour 10) Attach city water hose to inlet port on the water softener 11) Turn ON city water until water starts coming out the outlet port on the water softener the size of a pencil for 24-30 minutes. This is the slow rinse 12) Then increase water flow for 6-10 minutes for a fast-rinse 13) Taste the water coming out of the outlet port. If it tastes a little salty continue to rinse for a couple more minutes. Once salt taste is gone, use a test strip to check hardness. Once everything is OK… 14) Hook up the main RV water hose to the outlet port and you’ll be good to go NOTE: Under normal usage conditions you should have to do this about every 3 months

Thanks for another great video and a great list of tools! I’d add something like a 24” ish folding survival shovel with a sharpened side and a serrated side) never know when you’ll need to trim back some branches or dig yourself out of some mud or something! I haven’t found a very good quality or American made one at a decent price so I’m making due with a fairly cheap Chinese one for now!

Yep I actually have a really good one that I carry too. I didn't show it in this vid because I didn't want to over load folks. Just trying to show them the basics of what they really need to carry with them. But ya good comment Blake. 🔧

@@RVstreet Hahaha, ya that’s fair! I suppose it’s not strictly an RV tool anyways, really something that should be in any vehicle just like jumper cables, an air compressor, etc! What brand is yours and are you happy with it?

Hey thanks for knowing your weights, every time I ask my Rv friends how much the rig weighs they say...oh I don’t know I just fill it up....wrong answer and very dangerous really, stopping distance increases with every pound over your GVW. I will sure watch when you explain the weight issues lol . Good job and thanks

I know right. There's a lot of RVer's out there like that and that's very dangerous.

Good video series. While you were at the tool box I kept wondering which side of the coach it was on. My tools are on the passenger side, in case I’m on the side of the road, I don’t won’t have to worry about traffic while opening the door to get the tools. I hope that never happens.

Can you put a tool bag together and sell it at your store or list every piece you need including the bag to put one together? You absolutely have the best diy channel going.
@RVstreet2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tom so much, I thought about doing that, but most folks already have some tools, they just need to fill in the gaps with what's in my store so they have a complete set to tackle what they need for their RV. In addition to video you watched, I'm considering doing a more in depth video on what a good set of tools every RVer needs to carry with them. We'll see.

Here is what I did with my surge protector. First of all my rig has a build in surge but it’s lacking a lot of protection , so I cut the wires before the surge protector and installed a male and female 50 amp plug. You will ask why,well here is my thinking,first of all if my portable surge dies I can either plug in my backup surge or just plug the male and female together and at least get going till I find a new one, also nobody can steal my surge because it’s in the locked cubby . It works very well even in the Florida heat, make sure your surge protector can do high and low voltage, some of the cheaper once don’t have that. Food for thought folks

One thing I always very is torque wrenches. Can't tell you how many things get screwed up because of "elbow cluck calibration" because people over tighten or worse don't tighten enough.

This series has been the best Ive seen out all of the RV channels I watch. I’ve learned a lot and believe it or not, you have reinforced some suggestions and ideas on other channels that really know what they are talking about. Case in point, the TPMS. After seeing other channels I respect, recommend that brand and other research, you kind of sealed the deal for that one. So now, I need to ask, What are you doing for drinking water if your entire system is softened? I agree softening will protect your appliances and plumbing but you just eliminated the ability to drink water from your fresh water tank. Are you using bottled water? burkee?
@RVstreet4 жыл бұрын
Nope, we didn't eliminate our drinking water. We use our triple filtered, softened water for everything and we've had it tested. We have some some of the best water we've ever drank. Even the test results show that our water is WAY better than what most people get out of their tap at the house. We had a counter top Berkey Water filter it's now lives in our storage space in Houston, TX. Bottled water just takes up more room, more weight, wastes more plastic and something else to buy all the time. Our water system is super safe, tastes good and we use it throughout the entire coach for everything.

Saturday morning and Gail and I are re-watching your three-part critical items series when you got to explaining what the "black socks" are for......when I look over and she is staring at me. Yea I know, I'm the poster boy for "band-aid". So, are those really made out of socks? I think I need to wear those when I'm working; and I need a knee pad too. Just so you know; probably a lot of us re-watch these for entertainment and just to review what it is you recommended! Tnanks
@RVstreet4 жыл бұрын
Ok that's funny. Yep those are real socks. I bought a long pair of tube socks @ Walmart and cut off the long toe part. I got tired of banging up my arms because I'm always working on stuff. Have you seen my knee pads I made? I've shown that in several vid's.
