Yang's entrance in chapter 11 is still one of my top 5 favorite moments in the show! Her superhero landing, the triumphant arrangement of "Armed and Ready" in the score, *Adam getting decked in the face with a motorcycle*, it's an absolute work of art.

I love how Adam is like a dark reflection of Yang. They are warriors fighting for righteous (self-righteous in Adam's case) causes. They can absorb damage and send the energy back to their opponent. They're strong, passionate... and very troubled. Yang lost her mom, her biological mother left her, and her dad was a great person but a terrible caretaker. Because she could only count on herself, she made herself strong to spent her free time picking fights and looking out for her little sister, who looks up to her. Since he was child, Adam suffered insults, beatings, humiliations, and had no one to rely on because they were "weaklings satisfied to gnaw on scraps and afraid to leave the nest". One day he had enough and decided to face the people who called him and his kind "animals", becoming a symbol of revolution. That's why Blake was insure about Yang at first: she reminded her too much of Adam. She already had trusting issues, but after Yang broke Mercury's leg "by accident", Blake was the only member of the team who wasn't satisfied until she made her promise that she didn't do it on purpose. You can see how Yang is on the verge of tears at the thought of Blake doubting her. Their traumas have affected them greatly. Adam is full of spite because every time he looks in the mirror he remembers all the damage the world did to him, and Yang can't stop shaking every time she remembers that night in Beacon. And Blake's running triggers their abandoment issues, causing them to snap at everyone who mentions her. When Blake rejoins team RWBY, Yang has her doubts because she doesn't believe that she's staying because she wants to, but because she feels sorry or guilty for what she did to her. What Blake doesn't see is that Yang isn't angry about losing her arm. What I love the most about the scene when Adam takes off the blindfold is that Blake doesn't seem surprised when she sees his eyes. Adam wore the mask to become the monster humanity took him for. Because he couldn't show his vulnerable side to anyone... and yet, he did show it to Blake. Because they trusted her, and she left something worse than scars: *she left them alone.* In short, Adam is what Yang would have become if she couldn't let go of the past.

You could absolutely analyze the differences between Yang and Adam’s semblances in regards to how they handle their lives falling apart. Yang took everything on herself and gave up, but grew from it in the end. Adam rejected any responsibility and just lashed out at the world for everything that happened to him. One absorbs damage and gets stronger from it. The other reflects damage instead of taking it. Pretty much every semblance reflects the character they are attached to. I also really like that you basically get Adam’s entire backstory by just looking at his scar. He’s been branded with the Schnee Dust Company logo. It tells you all you need to know about his childhood that led to him hating humanity and joining the white fang.
@morlock20123 жыл бұрын
Yang has to risk getting hurt every fight she gets into. She can't borrow power without paying *something* for it, as you say. Adam doesn't have that feedback system, he can take from people at no cost. Easy to take for granted, it would have twisted him even if he wasn't damaged already. It's quite clever.

Also, I agree that Adam's timing was poor, but it was calculated. When he says "I've been waiting so long for you to be away from them" it sent a chill down my spine. Abusers love to isolate their targets so they don't have their support system to meet their needs. The abuser wants to be everything to the target, and also to stop the target from being able to see what normalcy looks like. And you were so right; Blake seemed more baffled by Adam's appearance than afraid or angry.
@jittercritter3 жыл бұрын
I mean Blake *is* a victim. Just because she is strong and talented and has stood up to her abuser several times doesn’t mean she isn’t a victim. Anyone who is abused is a victim of abuse, wether they’ve manage to break free or not. And even after you are away from your abuser, the things they did to you will still affect you. Once you have been abused, you are a victim of abuse. Victim does not mean helpless

i know i few others have added their thoughts, but i love the caveat that Adam can only channel his Semblance through his weapon, whereas Yang channels it through herself: Adam can only lash out, and never properly processed his pain, while Yang processes it and uses it to protect those she loves

The scar on Adam's eye says SDC, as in Schnee Dust Company. They branded his face and destroyed one of his eyes in the process. And from the looks of it, they most likely used a hot iron to do it. That's more than enough to mess anybody up.
@SJPaladinHawk3 жыл бұрын
An important thing to note is not just that Adam is scarred, but WHAT the scar is - someone branded his face with the SDC (Schnee Dust Company) logo, possibly while he was working there among many mistreated faunus.

"Is it (Qrow's) semblance?" To be honest, I don't think so, I think the reason Qrow sees so much as his "fault" is because he has bad luck AND a bad luck semblance. Things often go wrong, sure, but when Qrow's semblance is the cause it's fairly obvious. Usually his semblance kicks in within close proximity of him. Such as Tyrian stepping on a rotten plank in his fight with Qrow, or Winter about to attack Qrow, only for Ironwood to show up at that exact moment, or even the bar scene just before meeting Winter, where the bartender accidentally drops his shot glass. All of these situations are CLEARLY his semblance at play, but they're also important in another way; They're all sudden changes from normal to "bad luck" they're moments where the balance of circumstance suddenly shifts into the negative for no reason. Which is a long-form way of saying "they're accidents" that happen suddenly and with no reason to expect them. Adam showing up, Cordovan deciding to use the giant mech, Leo letting all the huntsman "disappear", all of these are logical, there are reasons that lead up to them. Adam's a psycho, and Blake slighted him, ergo; Adam follows Blake. Maria is Maria, Cordovan is Cordovan, and they were speaking to each other, ergo Cordovan jumps to extremes. Leo was paranoid, Salem has spies everywhere, ergo she could have spies even on Oz's council. All of these were logical, heck Ozpin didn't even seem THAT surprised that Leo was working with Salem, he'd basically figured it out before hand. These weren't simple "bad luck" they were cause and effect, and able to logic out, able to expect. If you expect something to go wrong (with say, stealing an airship) it's not "Bad Luck" when it goes wrong, it means it's going as expected. It would be bad luck to, say, try to steal an airship, succeed without anyone noticing, and then realize it has very little gas left. Luck has it's own logic if you seek to find it. And while "Luck" in fiction is more obvious and even more apparent to these rules, it's not impossible to notice these same rules in the real world, though to much vague'r effect, given luck is less a "force" and more a "pattern".

imho, going down the path of analyzing what is due to Qrow's semblance and what isn't is a mistake. The CRWBY do not make it very clear very often what that is affecting, so it is not really worth it, again imho.

Ah. This moment... So let's talk about Adam... where is Adam from? He has a brand on his face from the Schnee Dust Company, based in Atlas. He has an as-yet unknown grudge against Haven Academy and/or Professor Lionheart in Anima, such that he was determined to destroy them if it meant blowing himself and dozens of his followers up at the same time, he joined the White Fang through, or otherwise became close to, the Belladonnas, who are based out of Menagerie, and he ultimately became a chapter leader in Vale at the start of our story. He must have been an extraordinarily well travelled oppressed youth...

One thing I wonder is who's idea it was to use Weis seeming to give in to get the ship in the first place. It isn't something I could see anybody but her proposing just because everyone else is well aware of how scared she is of being sent back to her family alone. So how hard was it for her to come forward and then carry out the initial part of the plan.

The look Yang and Blake share suggests they had a meaningful talk the night before the heist, but we never get to see it. Oh, hey, Cordo has a big mech... right before Rooster Teeth launches their new mech series, what are the odds. We *still* don't get to see Blake's landing strategy. Cordo isn't just freaking out, she's freaking out the people of Argus; the grimm are sure to come. How does the missile not detonate when grabbed? And how does Blake keep her chest belt thing when she loses her coat? She has a cool Kill Bill moment, catching Adam's sword in her sheath, but she doesn't do anything with it and he takes it back. Not as dumb as leaving her team to protect them by returning to her family and endangering *them,* but this time she's being written as dumb for Yang's sake. Adam's eye was blinded by a SDC brand, it's a shame Weiss never sees it. I had an issue with Yang's hand shaking - combat PTSD doesn't kick in *during* a life-threatening situation - but as we see in the next chapter... oh look, Blake figured it out.

To be honest, Adam is one of the few characters in RWBY i feel they had troubles writing and coulda done a better job imo. There's a lot to unpack as to why, and could probably write an essay about it and how it feels like 2 entirely different characters but anyhow. I feel this Adam is definitely delusional and has manipulative traits, tho i do believe its more so that he believes so and sees himself as a victim (which is fair to say he is aswell imo), in a way very similarly to Salem, blaming everything but herself for the injustice in their lives. And his attitude is a mix of feeling wronged and hurt by the world, and also abandoned and betrayed by Blake, so his feelings were probably true but were overcome by the negative ones of hatred and resentment, for her leaving and also interfering with his revenge. Blake's describes him as "spite" but i personally disagree with it being downplayed to only that when it seems fair to say he is indeed a victim, the implications of that simple yet effective scar are some of the most horrible aspects and ways faunus like him were and are still treated as, since his actions might not be justified but his feelings are.
