This kid was afraid to stand up to a high school bully a few volumes ago and now he is in the literal most dangerous place on the planet with no fear or doubt in his mind that he's gonna get his friend out of there. So proud of my boy. Really love the group dynamic between Ren, Jaune and Yang. I dunno what it is but those three together just work really well.

I'm so happy with how much they got into RWBY over time. Like they were full on gushing about meeting the VAs (I would've too tbh) and Marketa with that amazing Blake cosplay! I thought she'd always wanted to cosplay as Ruby tho. Suraj and Damarin seem to have a little crush on Barb. 😏 And I love those merch. Fun Facts Fact 1: The fight between Salem and Hazel contains small references towards the former's literary allusion as the Wicked Witch of the West, in the form of Salem initially surrounding herself like a twister, just as Dorothy was caught in one in the the original story. Fact 2: Hazel says he's doing what Gretchen would have wanted. The siblings allude to the story of Hansel and Gretel, who burned a witch in her own oven. The last thing Hazel does in this episode is break a fire dust crystal, engulfing the witch Salem in flames. Fact 3: Marrow mispronouncing Jaune's name is a callback to "Pomp and Circumstance". Fact 4: The score that plays in the moment Hazel tells Oscar and Ozpin to not repeat their mistakes was composed/produced by Martin Gonzalez of Ok Goodnight. The episode as a whole featured a wave of new musicians. Fact 5: The episode had several cut moments, primarily revolving around Emerald Sustrai and Yang Xiao Long: In the scene where Emerald and Oscar find the heroes, Emerald tells the group that she's nothing like them. Fact 12: Paula Decanini draws parallels between Marrow and Hazel, who are both questioning their loyalty and considering what their next moves should be. Fact 13: The scene with Ren and Yang as Jaune briefly scouts ahead was added in the outlining stage because they found that they had time for an extra scene and thought it would be nice to include a quiet moment between Ren and Yang. They wanted to show that Ren and Yang had grown closer as friends and were able to be honest with each other in a way that the two of them hadn't had a chance to in the past. Jaune had previously shown that his mentality was that he had a job to do and they wanted someone to comment on that Before the end of the volume when he is forced to make a hard decision. Fact 14: Salem zooming down the hall is a reference to the "Yubaba Glide" from the anime film "Spirited Away" since she couldn't run in her dress. Fact 15: The moment where Yang defied Salem is meant to mirror how Ruby Rose defied James Ironwood in his office during "Gravity". Fact 16: When Hazel powered up using his Semblance, he deliberately overdosed on using Dust since he already knew he wouldn't survive the fight.

Fully agree Suraj. This episode(and the preceding episodes before this one, but especially this one) redeemed Hazel for me. One of the most badass ways for a character to go out. This cliffhanger caused massive psychic damage to fans. I also really really loved how unnerving, how…inhuman Salem moved around in this episode.

So on the topic of Tyrian, we actually do know a bit about his story. There was a scene in Volume 7 that briefly showed an article talking about Tyrian. In it it explains how he's a murderer and while he was being transported to a prison Salem personally came and broke him out, presumably killing everyone in the convey. So that sort of explains his whole "goddess" imagery for Salem, as well as him always being really sick in the head. It would be nice to get a bit more at some point, although that will probably come once we reach Vacuo.

Quick reminder that the huntsman academies are like colleges, not high schools. Most of the first year students, with the exception of Ruby, enroll when they are 17 or 18. So while the huntsman and huntress students are young, they are definitely adults, not 14 or 15. Though Oscar is that young.

The impression I've gotten regarding the personality merger comes from the first conversation we see Oz have with Oscar. Oz says that he, too, did not want this burden when it first came to him. When speaking with Ironwood he noted that eventually he won't be able to tell who is who anymore, which implies a sense of self from before that is maintained. When Oscar was talking to Ironwood about "a city in the clouds should be held to a higher standard," Ironwood remarks, "you say that like you were there." Oscar's words were subconsciously informed by (what is now) his past life who was present to propose and create the city. When Ozpin (in Oscar's body) is first explaining what he goes through to the kids, he remarks that he is "forever changed." From these pieces of evidence, I get the sense that the old personality will fade into the new one. I think of it like attaching a series of someone else's memories to your own. Oscar would then remember being Ozpin and all his predecessors as if they were his own past, but Oscar is his most recent self and would therefore have the strongest personality. It'd basically be Oscar, but also informed by the former lives. As was mentioned in the discussion, Ozpin is more set in his ways and it'd be bad if he took over and lost the unique perspective of the latest iteration...but that's exactly why the reincarnation cycle is designed the way it is. It ensures Ozma and co. stay in touch with mortality and have a greater capacity for change. It's a stark contrast to Salem, whose immortality allows her to be herself forever with nothing to displace it. Oscar fearing the merging is perfectly understandable as he and Ozpin will BOTH cease to exist and what will remain is a single new entity.

Something else to note about Ren's new semblance ability that I'd considered back when I saw this episode. Notice how they were able to more easily accept continuing forward with Emerald because Ren was able to read her emotions. Ren essentially has empathy+ where he can actually ascertain with certainty what the other person is feeling. It's an incredibly powerful shortcut to solving one of the biggest barriers to cooperation and trust. It will be interesting to see how that'll play into things going forward.

Ozpin's cane will be elaborated on later, if you haven't already found out. XD And a reminder for I suppose the last time, Gretchen was his sister. There are multiple facets to why Hazel took issue with Ozpin's methods. Keep in mind that the Huntsman Academies as a concept are maybe about 100 years old. Gretchen was lost in a training accident, so there's the aspect of potential youthful loss of life. Despite Huntsman and Huntresses mostly existing to help protect people from Grimm, they are essentially his opposing force to Salem, even if they're not aware of that fact; Salem is immortal, so Ozpin is, from a certain perspective, signing children up to fight a war they're destinated to lose. Also consider that the relics were kept at the Academies as they'd be the most well-fortified, but by doing so he placed targets on locations full of teenagers. So, despite the necessity and the logic behind the choice, there are moral trade-offs that were made in establishing this paradigm than Hazel took issue with. When he says no more Gretchens, I think the most important aspect of this mandate is that they know the truth and that they are fully aware of the true stakes and risks of taking up such a position. That's how I see it, at least. Sorry for yet another essay. lol And for splitting it into parts, it kept getting automatically hidden for some reason.

I'm not sure it's as clear as you say how much of the 'new' personality will be Oscar, and how much the gestalt. Oscar seems very unhappy about the merge, as if he believes he won't be be the dominant part of the result. And Ozpin is portrayed as very vulnerable to his past disappointments, fears, failures and betrayals. There have already been a few scenes where Ozpin is trying to adapt to Oscar, to leave room for him to make decisions and try new things. "You... Saved us"

I love the comparison between Ozma and Salem's immortality regarding change. It's such a good point! Especially since the intent in cursing Salem with immortality in the first place was to encourage her to change. I guess the Brother of Light was all, "OK, this time I'll force the issue".

I HIGHLY recommend that you also Watch RWBY Chibi as it is an Integral part of the RWBY Experience (although it is a continuity of its own). PLEASE PLEASE don't skip it. There is also RWBY Ice Queendom which is a brand New Anime based on the RWBY characters but with a slight twist (won't spoil it). Which just started. I also suggest you watch that and react to it.

Do you guys know about RWBY Ice Queendom? It's an anime version of RWBY that is completely new animation and kind of a retelling from Weiss' perspective. It breezes through season 1 in like a few episodes and it's really doing its own thing. Pretty cool.

Wish we knew how they got into the whale, but never mind. I didn't even notice the other half of team FNKI was there, the first time. It's the last time we see them, so they might be dead? Jaune has faith, which is in keeping with the inspiration for the character. I guess that rainbow semblance makes it possible to skate on grass? Yang dumped a bunch of remote detonating rounds into Salem's chest, I assume you've forgotten about those. Nice to see Yang finally refer to Summer as her mother, after volumes of Raven obsession. I would've liked to hear Hazel mention how Salem tricked and used him before 'doing what his sister would've done,' but this fight better demonstrated the use of raw dust in combat, such as using air dust to send him flying and combining earth and fire to make that 'covid' rock. I especially liked the 'natural' hard light shield near the end; makes me wonder which came first, this or Atlas' version. Hazel murdered a bunch of Mistral's huntspeople and tortured a child, so I've no sympathy for him... but at least his death wasn't a waste.

Not sure if it was ever clarified in the show but my understanding of the Ozpin-oscar scenario is that eventually oscar will merge with ozpin, and they will become one. Not necessarily that oscar will disappear and ozpin will take over, but more that ozpin and the host will merge and oscar's thoughts and personality will combine with ozpin (who is at this point, the combination of many many previous hosts and ozma, the original). So more like the ozpin we know is already a massive combo of previous people, and not that he's the same ozma all the way through. does that even make sense, idk

You have to be 17 to take the huntsman exam. The members of Team FNKI (Funky) are probably 18-19 years old which is still REALLY YOUNG but its enlisting age. Ruby was 15 at the start of the show when she got skipped ahead 2 grades. Oscar is the youngest at 14

It’s actually Ozpin who will fade into Oscar. Oscar is still himself, but will gain the memories of Oz. Ozpin says it himself in volume 5, “I am changed, but my memories stay with me”. It’s a bit confusing, because Oscar doesn’t understand this either, and he’s scared of how Ozpin and him melding will change him. But Ozpin is changing too, Oz has been speaking much less formally and stiffly since his return. And Oscar holds himself with more poise, and confidence similar to Oz. It’s interesting! But no, Oscar won’t just die off and become Professor Ozpin

So we can kind of gauge Salem's raw power here. Hazel only managed to hold his own against her and this was him going all in with the 99.9% chance that he would die. I remember reading comments and posts about how she does not dodge; why would she need to? Hazel and Ozpin have both stated that she cannot be killed and both did try to kill her. She knows she is immortal and therefore does not need to avoid taking any kind of damage. All of that aside, she is similar to Freeza from DBZ; she lets her underlings do the fighting for her as doing her own "grunt work" just seems asinine. What I really like about Hazel's turn is that he isn't putting any sort of stock in Ozpin, but rather he was giving Oscar the same courtesy that he was shown when Oscar spilled the password. Hazel took a chance with Oscar and after they summoned Jinn, he knew Oscar was pretty much laying all of his cards on the table. "No more Gretchens" was just Hazel telling Oscar to do better than Ozpin had. For us, the audience, that is akin to doing better by people like Qrow, Pyrrha, Ironwood, Gretchen, Summer, and Raven. Oz' secrets have only gotten people killed or made them dangerous to both themselves and others.

So, you guys know it's gotta happen so let's get it out of the way. The gods cursed Salem with, "So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face." And Ozma/Ozpin is tasked to reincarnate to stop Salem and bring the people together. The Gods themselves didn't say they would return in a moment of an "apocalypse" or end of the world situation. The Gods said that whenever the 4 relics were united in one place, they would return to judge humanity. If humanity wasn't united like Ozpin was supposed to do, they will destroy all of Remnant. Not save it. Other than that! I love this show and I love you guys!!

Ozpin's reincarnation will continue until the gods are summoned back. If he's ever going to die then the gods have to return and either Remnant passes their judgement and they remove his immortality, or Remnant fails their judgement and they destroy the planet, ending his immortality by virtue of there being no one left for him to reincarnate into. Salem on the other hand has two ways to die and one of them requires that the gods return and that Remnant fails their judgement. If she prevents world piece and summons the gods with the relics then Remnant will fail the god's judgment and he destroyed, therefore fulfilling the conditions for one method of her death ("so long as this world shall turn you will walk it's surface"). The alternative method doesn't require the gods return; she can learn a moral lesson about the necessity of life and death and her immortality will turn off, allowing her to die. Seeing as Salem hates the gods there's little chance that she will accept their moral lesson, leaving only planetary destruction as he only option.

Such a great episode. All of the tension really starts getting pushed out and it's nonstop from here. I loved that Hazel said he had murdered Salem before till he couldn't punch anymore, so he knew that hitting her with everything wouldn't stop her. Hell. Ilnothing but Ozpin's magic even slowed her down

My interpretation of the Oz/Oscar dynamic isn't that Oz will "take over", but that eventually the Oz personality will fade and leave Oscar with his memories. In your Piccolo analogy, Oscar is Piccolo, and Oz is Nail.
