I absolutely adore the fact that they actually said that she was trans in the show. If they just said that she was on Twitter or something it would feel cheap. Also I love that she called Ruby and co out on their indecisiveness and naïveté. They wanted to help everyone in a situation where that wasn’t possible and couldn’t figure out what do, so they didn’t really do anything for a while which probably cost people their lives. When they did enact their plan to save both a lot of people still died and both city’s were completely destroyed, which kinda proved May’s point. While her reveal as trans was great, her decision to leave her family was very cold. Like damn, May must have been born into a rich family and like Weiss saw how fake and self entitled all of then were. May and Weiss are similar both raised in a rich house hold but found people who accepted them despite their status. However, unlike Weiss May cares about her friends more than her family because her family must have been downright horrible to her especially when she come out, if she already made her decision to leave them behind.

hi i am a trans woman who has cut contact with people in my family due to there belifes. it may be cold but its also somtimes the best choice. if you know they arnt ever going to respect your identity it really hurts to be around them and can make you very depressed. every situation is diffrent and i can only speak from my experences. leaving that part of my family is the best thing i could have done.

An example of LGBTQ representation done right in RWBY is llia. llia is the chameleon Faunus who had feelings for Blake and because Blake didn't reciprocate her feelings, llia joined the White Fang. Revealing llia's sexual orientation was appropriate because it narratively made sense to do so. An example of representation done awfully in RWBY is Marigold. Marigold revealed they were transgender by talking about their personal history about their gender identity when it made absolutely no sense to talk about it in that situation. Because it didn't make any narrative sense to reveal Marigold's gender identity this way, it was an example of bad writing. RWBY fans refuse to acknowledge bad writing like with the Bumbleby ship because it has representation, but good writing requires that it has to narratively make sense to include it in the first place, just like any straight relationship in the show.
