My dad didn't play many video games but he loved golf. We rented all kinds of different golf games where the physics would do WHATEVER they wanted to at any random moment. Mario Golf was the first golf game that had GOOD controls and physics. Not only was it consistent enough to play a normal game. It was so consistent that the unique attributes of the different characters could be learned.

If you were to create an insane character in the gameboy version of mario golf and transfer it to the N64 you can drive any green in the game. I never got the transfer pack as a kid and didn't have a 64 but I made plenty of characters on the gameboy that could hit 400+ yards without a power shot.
@GamerFolklore
@GamerFolklore Жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that even at max power, the transferred characters max out at 400 yards on N64. Even so, I'd love to play around with it. And I wonder how long it would take to make it all happen.
@BlackBeltGamers88

@@GamerFolklore If you have access to a Retron 5 you could use game genie to just force make level 99's and write the save data to the cartridge then use the transfer pack to bring them to the n64 game. That was my plan eventually, I have everything needed just been lazy about it.
@2rare2die26
@2rare2die26 Жыл бұрын
Can speak from experience, it was AWESOME. and there was no distance cap - if you wanted "balanced stats" you would max out around a 400 yards drive, but if you didn't care about how high you hit the ball, or the spin, you could easily go up to 480-ish. We (edit: "we" being my father and me in my childhood) put points in a perfectly straight drive and the rest in max power, but let it go as high as it wanted and used to max around 450Yds. Love the vid and the comment

My siblings and I played this game a ton in the late 90's and all got pretty good to the point where games were quite competitive. Most of the time the winning round was -18. One of our youngest siblings had one of those fisher price colored ring sets that you would stack on a white base with a yellow pole. Not sure how it started but anyone who messed up a shot would get handed the "shaft" and have to keep it till someone else messed up. No one wanted to get the shaft. Fun game, fun times.

The "Albatross Putt". I never even thought of this much. I never played Mario Golf 64, looks like a classic that I missed, but I did play PGA Tour 2022 or whatever recently and I got into golf. But man you made a great point, it's so interesting to think who in the world at all ever saw that screen raw. It can't have been but a handful of people because it appears you necessarily need a lot of things particularly in your favor to even make it work. Sometimes that level of thought and detail that is actually added to a game that never gets appreciated, somehow that in and of itself has to make up for all the things we did wish developers added into games... somehow...

Mario Golf 64 is a game that I played pretty much since it first came out. It has steadily become my favorite Mario sports game. Although I've played this for over 20 years, I can never bring myself to break into the tournament scene. Rather, I play this strictly for fun. I only recall doing the nighttime matches maybe once or twice against the AI; it's cool to see the stylized fireworks after every hole. I never got into Mario Golf GBC, but heard that the characters can potentially be OP. Seeing in-game footage of that, that is crazy how far they can hit the ball! Mario Golf is one of those video games that I can fall back on to relax and have a cozy time. Nice video!

4:08 "But it's just an amazing attention to detail." I would like to point out, this is very likely just a result of the "W" using the same vertex color as the current Wario's overalls to save on memory. The recoloring is a neat side-effect, but it likely wasn't the programmer's intention. If it was intentional, the "W" would've been much more saturated for most costumes.

Aww, you didn't talk about the hidden password system meant for special tournaments. One of the cheat code books I owned back in the day even detailed the one to play as Donkey Kong for the long defunct Camp Hyrule site with a funny quip at the end: "And no, he doesn't have to wear those long polyester pants." They removed the special password system for the Switch Online release for obvious reasons.

I've finally figured out why we like listening to your videos so much... after decades of gaming, you're now able to channel those nostalgic imprints directly into speech patterns. The interface of Nintendo & your voice has inadvertently integrated; the union of digital with biological. That's why we enjoy your videos even if we've never played the game ur discussing! remarkable

> Wario isn't exactly a character you often select, but it's just an amazing attention to detail Sorry to burst your bubble but this is 99.9% not "attention to detail", but rather "Nintendo in that era was typically sticking to color palettes mapped separately per-object to save storage space". You will find that every single object in the game has a total number of colors far far fewer than the number of colors supported by the game overall (on wario I count 9 which can probably be expanded to 16 when including all shaded polygons as a separate color, which means they could store the color palette in a 4-bit structure), which means that the W he generates in his win screen simply automatically points to the same color on wario's color palette as the W on his hat. Attention to detail is not exactly what I would call that.

Hi Goose, long time watcher for the past five years here. It's very cool to see you talking about Mario Golf, seeing it's one of the most slept upon Mario games. Most people usually settle for the GC one but the 64 one has some truly pristine vibes. I don't know if it's the music (even though Sakuraba worked on Mario Tennis as well) or the atmosphere as a whole, but it has something that gives it a very distinctive identity. I used to have a blast playing it when I was younger and would often boot up the N64 years later just to play it again. Also very glad to see you keep on delivering quality content after all these years, ty and keep it coming man. I hope I manage to catch you live soon

I actually discovered the secret Yoshi/ Donkey Kong song when I played this game a lot as a kid. While I'm not a pro at this game, I puts tons and tons of hours into it with it also being the game that turned me into a Bowser fan since I loved his insane drive distance and him really contributing to my completion of the game. This game will always have a special place in my heart.❤

It took me a long time to appreciate this game but its slowly become one of my favorite golf games. I'm still a bit aways from unlocking all the characters but I've actually been playing the GBC port on the side to transfer over my character and it's a really cool function of the GBC port being able to level them up in both versions. I think it's fascinating that they originally worked on Everybody's Golf/Hot Shots Gold before primarily developing for Nintendo. Crazy when you consider Hot Shots would become Sony's iconic golf game franchise, Clap Hanz did manage to do well with the series so not all was lost.

"The game has an indescribable ethereal soul" Me: Bursts into loud laughter, a tear of nostalgia wells in my eye, and I am reminded again why I love the Goose.

The Cartway terrain is a carryover from Hot Shots Golf on the Playstation. The first game was developed by Camelot and felt closer to Mario Golf compared to later Hot Shots Golf installments, which were developed by a different studio. It even had the same Get Character challenge as well.

I could never beat Bowser as a kid, I once had him tied after 18 holes. The 4th or 5th hole into sudden death Bowser gets a hole in one. My heart sank, then I just turned the console off. I'm glad to know he was a cheater, lol.

I rented Mario golf when Blockbuster was still around. I loved it as kid. It sad that Mario Golf switch is nothing compared to the N64 and GameCube version. It not always about the graphics.
