The Grumman A-6 Intruder is a US carrier-based twin-jet all-weather attack aircraft in service with the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It was designed during the late 1950s and early 1960s as a close air support attack bomber capable of hitting the enemy at any time. The A-6 Intruder was built in various versions and was a very advanced aircraft for its time. It saw action in the Vietnam War where it was extensively used, in the Lebanon conflict, during the Gulf War in 1991 and finally in Iraq, Somalia and over Bosnia. The last Intruders were retired in 1997.
The model built in this video shows an A-6E TRAM Intruder, United States Marine Corps, VMFA(AW)-533 "Hawks" during Operation Desert Storm, Shaikh Isa Air Base, Bahrain 1992. The Italeri kit is part of the "Gulf War" Series, released as a re-box in 2017 and was also sold by Tamiya and a few other brands.
The quality of the kit is not too bad overall though it has a few problems. Cockpit, fuselage, instrument panel and a few other parts have fit issues that need to be addressed, otherwise the detailing is good and allows for a nice build out of the box. After all I would recommend to use a few aftermarket parts, especially bombs and missiles. The included parts require a lot of work but are only of average quality at best.
Let me know what you think of this build. Your comments and opinions are highly appreciated. Please bear in mind I am not a professional modeler, I just build these models for fun and relaxation and to help regain my mental and physical health.

An absolute beautiful job on this A6. I was in an A6 squadron while serving in the US Navy circa 1970. NAS Oceana VA-42 The Green Pawns. We trained A6 pilots and Navy BN's. Many of our pilots and BN's went on to serve on carriers during Vietnam War. All of our A6 pilot and BN instructors were harden combat Vietnam veterans. Kudos on this beautiful build...

Came into this vid off the back of the carrier deck build! The A6 is a thing of beauty, a bomb hauler, a ground pounder, an arse kicker of a jet and I love it! 🤪👍🏻👍🏻 I’d read around the subject before buying the kits, so it was interesting to see the fit issues in real time. It was also good to see them overcome.....patience will be a requirement, obviously? 😎🤪 I’d just like to echo some previous comments: weathering not overdone, quality of video, the use of unobtrusive music, pace of build, etc, it’s PLASMO but done on a different slant.....can’t say better than that, friend! Anyhow, I’m subscribed.....👍🏻👍🏻

I remember building this kit (well, EA-6A Wild Weasel version, to be exact) about 20 years ago. Back then, I thought it fit really well and the details were great. Of course, standards were a bit different back then. It was pretty much expected that every joint will have to be filled and sanded. I did not even have putty, I used thick glue to fill major gaps. And the paint to fill the minor ones (my model was wholly painted using a brush, in grey-over-white Vietnam-era scheme). No acryllic paints, no water-soluble putty, no precut paining masks... yet, it turned out pretty well - it still sits in my display cabinet :)

Awesome, thanks for your comment! I’m still relatively new to the hobby and don’t know too much about the changes in quality standards. Like many of us I messed around with a few kits as a child (more than fourty years ago). At that time these were more like toys anyway, now the models mean much more to me and I hope I can keep them for as long as possible. 🙂 Cheers, Oliver/RWO

@@RWOModels It's just that newer kits (made after 2000) are insanely more accurate then the earlier ones. Everything is computer designed and precisely machined, so they just "build themselves", like those Tamiya kits. Kits from 80-ties and 90-ties (like this Intruder) are still mostly OK, with good detail and recessed panel lines. Stuff from the 60-ties is a major pain to build, but sometimes you have no choice if you want to build some particular rare subject (e.g. I built C-121A Constellation from Heller once, a real stinker of a kit which builds into a beatiful, impressive aircraft). Since kits are repacked over and over again, you can still go to the shop and buy a new kit which comes from the molds made in the 60-ties. Before you buy something, you can go to a website like "Scalemates" and read everything about every plastic kit ever made - if it's a new release or and old repackaged classic. Alternatively, if you want to build something specific, you can go and find out what kits are/were available and which is the best. Keep it going :)
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your explanations! I also frequently check Scalemates to find out about kits that interest me, and of course I noticed that some of the kits I built were better made than others. When I started last year I only bought kits of the planes I like and that seemed easy to build, regardless of their age, now I actually try to get more modern, high quality kits where possible. The Heller Lufthansa Super Constellation is also on my wish list, maybe some day I’ll find one for a good price. 🙂 I’m sure it builds into an impressive model. 👍

USN a/c are a favourite subject of mine and I've built a couple of these Italeri / RoG A-6's so I know the problems around the poor fit of the intakes & lower plates. A modeler and a videographer? 😳 As an ex Air Force bomb loader, I was surprised to see MK-20’s as part of the load on an A6! The only thing wrong with the MK-20’s loaded on this airplane is the M339 fuze had a red anodized impeller! Clear red over the silver would do very nice!

Great result. I will use your experience when building my Intruder model. Any thoughts on how to make the decals more contrasting? Should I use a lightened base paint? And another question - why do you use Vallejo paints? Nice watches! 😎👍
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I’m 100% sure your build will be awesome with all your fantastic detail work (whereas I’m just a simple „out of the box builder“ 😳). Regarding the much too light decals I think I would now go for darker aftermarket decals. On most A-6 pictures I found with the Ghost Grey low-visibility scheme the markings are in fact darker than the base color. The included decals however are lighter so I don’t see any chance of fixing that, especially with all the tiny stencil decals. When I started the hobby last year I quickly realised I needed better paints than the crappy Revell I initially used. So I started buying a lot of Vallejo Model Air since they have a great range and are available at my local hobby shop. Is there anything wrong with Vallejo? Thanks again! Cheers, Oliver/RWO

Fantastic job!!!, Which is the dilution and psi that you used for the white marbling and the grey ghost layer? Thanks
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm afraid I can't tell you the exact details since I often adjust dilution and pressure on the fly. Starting point is usually around 15psi but I have a small adjuster valve attached to my airbrush and when doing fine detail work I go as low as even possible and adjust dilution accordingly so that I can get as close to the surface as possible. Also, each paint is different so you may need a few tests before painting your actual model. Took me a bit of practice, and the airbrush needs to be perfectly clean as well. For the ghost grey layers I diluted the paint a bit more than usual (60-80% thinner maybe?). Sorry for not being able to give you a more accurate answer on this... Could you give specifics on the brushes you used for the painting. Thank you. Awesome video!!!

Thank you very much! The branding on the brushes says "Roubloff 101F kolinsky". I have a set ranging from sizes 00 to 2, they're very nice and durable. I received these brushes as a gift so I'm afraid I can't give you any more details except that I like to work with them. 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Nice build. No issues with the super glue fogging up the canopy?

Thanks! I tested the glue on a spare piece of clear sprue before and it was fine. No fogging up this time. :)

Hi, das sind zwei preisgünstige 50x50cm LED-Lichtboxen, die es bei A..z.n im Set gibt. Habe die schräg über dem Tisch befestigt, dazwischen die Kamera. :)

Please tell me what kind of tweezers 189 is?
@RWOModels
@RWOModels Жыл бұрын
Hi, the tweezers with the "189" engraving on the inside are the Tamiya 74108 "HG Angled Tweezers (Round Tip)". I also use the Tamiya 74047 "HG Angled Tweezers" which have a smaller tip. Highly recommended. Hope this helps.

Great job. Sorry, I missed it: Why was it a mistake to add the pylons before painting?
@RWOModels
@RWOModels Жыл бұрын
Sorry for my late reply. I had attached the lower parts of the pylons (the actual rails carrying the bombs, don't know the exact term for these) in the wrong direction. Also it would have been easier to paint and weather the parts separately. Thanks for watching!

What weight version is that but nice
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 2 жыл бұрын
The weight I put into the nose is from a relatively large piece of lead a friend gave me who is a roofer and uses this for his work. I cut it into small pieces so that I could fill up the space more easily. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching.

Does Vallejo need thinner like dark ghost and light grey?
@RWOModels
@RWOModels 11 ай бұрын
Yes, absolutely. Vallejo claims that their Model Air paints can be used directly from the bottle but from my experience they definitely need a good amount of thinner and/or flow improver.

7 minutes into the video and the takeaway seems to be that it’s a low quality kit and requires all kinds of effort to make it look good.

Yes, it definitely needs some work, especially the fuselage assembly was tricky, but after all I think you can build a pretty decent looking model out of it. 🙂 Thanks for watching!
