Piper M500 Aircraft Demonstration Flight with Dick Rochfort

Have had a Meridian for 3 months. Step up from my Malibu. Both are excellent aircraft. Meridian is a joy to fly - easier to land and manage than the piston. Much faster and smoother too - and I don't think twice about venturing far over water with the PT6A. Getting an AOA sensor installed next week as a safety add on. You really don't need it if you follow your speeds and watch your banks, but as we all know a stall can occur at any attitude and at any airspeed so why not have this instrument. I think the M500 is an EXCELLENT add on and only wish they had this last year when I bought my aircraft - I would suggest to piper/Garmin two additional things: 1. A red gear warning horn and display (not just a caution on the CAS) if low engine torque is seen and the G1000 indicates

At the one minute mark I see a mistake in the start sequence. After engine is started you are suppose to press the ALT (Alternator) button first make sure it takes the load then press the GEN (Generator) button and make sure the load is shed from the Alternator and transferred to the Generator... Surprised the test pilot did the opposite of what it recommended by manufacturer.

Hi Derek, you are most observant. Thank you for noticing the post start sequence. When this aircraft was originally introduced it had a less capable battery. The current (please excuse the pun) battery design has a quicker recovery rate which causes the alternator to go offline after a battery start. This is because the 130 amp alternator is trying to recover the battery. B initiating the generator first this anomaly is avoided.

:)) it would be nicer for the pressure if garmin did like on other planes that the field eve is taken from itself from what you program as the airport that you are landing at and not have to be entered manually by yourself . looks like that is no inertial separator? looks like you can start it up with the bleed air on? thanks

Hi M, All of the PA46 Meridian aircraft are PT6 engines without a rain door or inertial separator which makes them really easy to operate. It is not recommended to have cabin bleed air open/on for start because, as the name implies, pressurized air is bled away from the engine. During start this leads to warmer temperatures. As always I recommend that turbine starts be conducted with a 28V GPU unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. Setting cabin pressure is almost completely automatic.. at the top of the descent set the cabin pressure 500 ft above the destination altitude. It really doesn’t get much simpler than that. On a standard day the M600 burns about 360lbs in the climb and 300 in cruise, but after flying the M500 (burns the same in the climb and about 250 lbs in cruise) I find the small amount of additional burn in the M600 to be negligible when compared to having to stop for fuel more often in the M500.

With a decent option package your under 1300lb usable load so not really a practical 6 seat tourer unless your doing 40 min hops, so that rules me out , shame because its a nice aircraft
