in the 49er clip, on the downwind, there was a pretty big wind shift in your favor that allowed you to do a shorter leg. I believe it was a win based of wind shift, and not so much wind pressure. Great vid anyway!

Make sure you’re in an RS400! Great handicap and the absolute weapon of choice for the SHOUTY Husband and Wife combination. Other pairings are available, but none so amusing to onlookers and fellow racers as the smiling (at the bar - we do remember bars don’t we?) and snarling (on the water) loving husband and wife. Usually long married and quite possibly long suffering. “So which end of the start line is favoured?” “Don’t you talk to me like that, you didn’t do the washing up last night.” And the race begins.......

How does anybody decid what course side to pick; Given the short field, un-usual (and consistant) giant wind shifts that occur? Too many times, I've been un-realistically knocked out of 1st heading up the last up-hill leg with a significant lead. A complete gamble on which side to pick.

Adam what is the red and number on the transom in a small circle ?

Hi Pete, when you are close to other boats the right of way boat will have a red circle around them to identify them as the right of way boat and the number is the rule number. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, Adam

How do you "win" a start on the committee boat end biased lines?

Hi Stuart, I always find the starboard end harder as it is usually really crowded, however I try to use a similar technique to the port end. I try not to approach too early and on a close hauled course not reaching in. If possible I try to create some space to leeward but this is tricky at the starboard end so usually I aim to be on the line going fast at the gun to roll any boats to leeward. Thanks, Adam

good vid. but "win your end" isn't great advice. "be first row" is more like it, with a clean, low-penalty-risk lane, on the favored side. someone who takes you too literally will be like the guys to leeward of you at 3:15. Don't shoot for 1st or bust; steady top 5's or 10's or whatever win a regatta
