there's a line from one of the marcel the shell videos that always comes to mind, esp in the current cultural and political discussions which is at the heart of the genghis khan discussion - compared to what? we tend to compare our current situation to an ideal one. that leads to dissatisfaction. we're better off comparing it to how much worse it could be. then we can be happy and enjoy what we have know while we still work on making things even better.

I hope you actually still read the comments, because that´s a trait of people who actually care I think. You are a great guy Lex, like you have so much knowledge and positivity to share. As somebody who reads his comments, too, I can only say you made a good point for it when arguing with Joe. There is something to be gained from community interaction, be it humor, interesting thoughts or discussion and I would love to see things to improve in that direction further. I sometimes get negative comments, too, but also those same people sometimes return, like weeks or months later, to say that I actually changed their mind on things and to say sorry. Interaction leads to improvements, a lack of interaction and immediate feedback leads to stagnation I think.

Hmm, I am afraid I fall in the other camp. I was driven to lex because of insights that I never get to hear from joe, because lex can ask second order questions because of his background, eg: like ones from Wolfram. While I do understand that ufo topic will get 10x the views, I am not sure lex should go towards populism because then he won't ask in depth questions because he is not specialized in that field
@pdsm15524 жыл бұрын
@@PrashantMaurice As someone who got drawn to his podcast for very similar reasons to you- I have a slightly nuanced view of your point- I think Lex will ask nuanced in depth questions as much as he can. I personally loved this podcast as a JiuJitsu practitioner and competitor, having the opportunity to, for almost 4 hours, hear the thoughts of one of my "heroes" in the sport being interviewed by someone who gets it is an incredible opportunity. I do undertstand the concern that the further Lex strays from his domain of expertise, the less he will be able to ask those poignant questions. However as a physicist, his podcasts with Penrose and Hutchinson give me hope that he can still ask very incisive and thought through questions even outside of his field of expertise. At the end of the day, I enjoy Lex as an interviewer since he does his homework and has notes and gets questions from his audience too- so I should hope that translates to a slightly more populist approach to how the guests get chosen.

Ryan Hall's quote at the end of the interview. Not sure of the source, but wanted to write it down, as the words are very impactful. Live your life so the fear of death can never enter your heart Trouble no one about their religion, trouble no one about their view and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life and beautify all things in your life Seek to make your life long and its purpose to the service of your people Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word, sign or salute when meeting or passing by a friend, even a stranger when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning, give thanks to the food and for the joy of living If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only within yourself. Abuse no one or no thing, for abuse turns the wise one into fool and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death so that when there time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

So happy you're stepping out of science purely from the new perspective's. Don't get me wrong, truly love math and all the guest you've had before hand, but the expansion of the pallete is super nice.

I'm going to start commenting more often to make your comment section even more positive. I really liked this episode. I didn't know what I was going to get from your first non-scientific episode, but I decided to give it a shot.Ryan is an extremely insightful person. I was pleasantly surprised with this discussion. I can't wait to see your more diverse group of guests moving forward

I've easily listened to over 500 podcasts and I can count on one hand the amount of times I'd replayed it instantly. This guy is so fucking interesting, I love that you asked him such normal questions but also mixed in philosophy. Be kinder to yourself Lex, you do a brilliant job.

Conceivably, the podcast (episode) of 2020. Interview with a philosopher king.

I'd say more of a philosopher-warrior. He doesn't hold the political power be a philo-king.

Wonderful and insightful podcast! Thank you and Ryan very much. I am now, and have been for a long time, a big fan of both of you. I learned a lot about life while listening to this.

30:00 Lex clearly goes for the polite nod rather than saying something like: “you’re referring to the ‘treaty of Versalles’ being used as political leverage by the Weimar Republic?” which may have made his guest feel silly. Lex is cool 😎

I don't thino Hall was using it as an example of a justified reason for war in an absolute sense... rather as an example of a justification through the "righting" of wrongs which all punitive "justice" runs the risk of entailing.

So awesome seeing a connection between the AI world and the MMA world! Like you, I'm a member of both. I met Ryan Hall when training at Marcelo Garcia academy circa 2011 and it was always fun watching him roll. The rolls between him and Marcelo on MGInAction are stellar. Also LMAO at his comment about Paul Schreiner during the meme review. Much love Lex! I hope I get the opportunity to train with you one day.

Ryan should really have a podcast, he's got so much to say, but he would need a co-host able to draw him out of himself. It'd be a huge hit.
