@jeffroberts9116 The Soviets imposed all kinds of internal restrictions and targeting of war veterans in the Finnish military after the war. Finland was required to actually pay war reparations to Russia. Many Finnish officers fled the country and joined the US military under the lodge act.

@jeffroberts9116 The famous Finnish war hero and recipient of the Mannerheim Cross, Lauri Törni, was actually arrested and thrown in prison in Finland. He escaped from prison multiple times, fled to Sweden, then took a ship down to South America, then took one to the Gulf Coast, jumped off and swam into a US harbor. He linked up with Finnish ex-pat officers in the US Army, then enlisted even though he had been a Major. He did the commo route in SF, then went officer in the 11th Airborne Division in West Germany. After rearranging a historic bar with some German nationals' faces, he was facing court-martial, but got rescued by a Finnish Battalion Commander in 10th Special Forces Group. They made him a SCUBA Team ODA Team Leader. His team successfully recovered a US covert reconnaissance aircraft that had crashed in the mountains in Iran. He later volunteered to go to Vietnam in the early days when things were still in the US advisory role, and he ran an A Camp near the border. He finished his tour, came back to the US, then volunteered for SOG. Went back to Vietnam, and was pretty senior by then, so on SOG's first cross-border mission into Laos, his Command & Control bird went down and he was MIA for decades.

Life for most people is about expense and opportunities. Rich travel and enrich their personal life experience. They have that luxury. Everybody else travels extensively in military service or looking for work. Else, if reasonable means of economic support is found where they grew up, they sink roots and raise families amongst friends and loved ones and invest in the American Dream as they are able. The travel is a family vacation to Florida or a regional American local if they are lucky. It’s opportunity, not ignorance.

@@spiff1003 Well had we not supported a regime change in Ukraine, Ukraine would not be at war with Russia. Obama himself publicly joked while president (during Sochi Olympics) about needing to be careful about stealing Ukraine away from Russia, and make no mistake we did exactly that. I personally think that while we shouldn’t abandon Ukraine we need to put all our efforts into stopping this war, not fighting it. Yes that does mean Ukraine gonna have to give up territory, but when you make poor decisions to poke the bear you get what you get, they honestly should have known better because the Russia invasion came with MANY direct warnings from Russia. Far as defending other European countries, that depends on how it starts, how much of your GDP you’re spending on defense, and strategic value. You pushing buttons you shouldn’t? You’re on your own. You think you don’t gotta meet treaty obligations on spending? You’re on your own. You have zero strategic value? We shouldn’t have allowed you into NATO in the first place. This is war not a charity, we owe you nothing, and every time a European pops off forgetting this, our collective “fuck you” only gets louder. I’ll also add that last minute increases in spending to “meet” treaty obligations isn’t actually meeting treaty obligations if you’ve been a freeloader for decades. It be like me thinking if I just sent my landlord a rent check for this month he’ll cancel the eviction notice even though I still owe him for all the other months… Don’t work that way, the only way I get to stay is if I made good on the whole of my lease agreement, well that and do some serious apologizing for breaching the AGREEMENT in the first place. Congress is currently considering HUUUUGE subsidies to restore commercial ship building. (1) it will be a huuuge give away to corporations, but pretend to be "for national security"). (2) Korean and Japanese commercial ships are more than plentiful and adequate already. Subsidies for US commercial ship building capacity is totes not necessary - unless you want to tax the middle class and give it to billionaires.

I think that in general the “success” of drone warfare in the UKR war is due to the lack of air superiority by either side. How would air support look like if one side owned the air space?
@ElijsDima9 күн бұрын
Could be pretty similar tbh, drones are so cheap and easy-to-deploy and numerous, it would be a nightmare for the conventional airforce to chase down all the drones. ... One thing, though, probably launching/operating a drone would be more risky as the air force could find where the drone operator is and send a missile on him/her. But air force denying drone-flying? Unlikely. And if one side wants to task a jet fighter + missile to shoot down a $399 DJI drone (or sub-$1000 equivalent homebuild), well, all the better.

One of them is, how tight drone swarm it is, and how precise the steering in them is.

This is very visible now with the wild signing bonuses being offered. (And to be clear - I’m not saying we shouldn’t ever also pay them more - I’m just saying some of these improvements should be a nobrainer for the people dealing with recruiting and retention issues)

In the "Winter War" of 1939-1940, the Finns lost 26,000 killed in action, but the Soviets lost 200,000! I wouldn't call that the Finns "getting crushed". In the end it was basically a draw, but Finland was forced to cede some strategic territories, about 11% of their land mass, to the Russians, but were able to retain their national sovereignty. In WWII, Finland allied itself with Nazi Germany, mainly to resist the Soviet desire to gobble up Finland like it did to all of the nations in Eastern Europe. That strategy preserved Finland as an independent and nominally neutral country while the Eastern European countries became Soviet Communist puppet states. Now, as a member of NATO, and retaining their ferocious fear and hatred of the Russians, I think that if Putin initiated a "special military operation" against Finland, the Finns might not only successfully defeat the incompetent and thoroughly corrupted Russian army, it might also regain all of the territory it lost fighting alone in 1940! I have a friend who is a first generation Finnish-American emigre', and former Finnish Marine Corps special ops guy. He says that when he was a kid, his grandmother always said about the Russians, "Fry them in butter or fry them in lard, they all still taste the same." 👍🇫🇮🇺🇲🐻

I think his point was basically to not underestimate our charming eastern neighbor. We surely wouldn't get crushed, but as Ryan said, Russians have gained a lot of experience in real combat, and learned from some of their mistakes. We would be fools to underestimate them, as they did Ukraine and western resolve. And I think he may have generally a bit sceptical view on conscripts, due to his not so stellar experiences with for example Egyptian conscripts. We wouldn't certainly be crushed, but it wouldn't be easy war. Luckily this time we have allies and much better armed and prepared forces.

The wars of 1939-1945 were not the same as the wars of 85 years earlier (1840). Neither will the wars of 2025 be in any method similar to 1940. There is an adage to explain many failures in wars: they were fighting the previous war.

Great discussion. I note just two things. 1. US has everything you would ever want - except perhaps any depth of KULCHARALERITAGE, and 2. The US not responding with full support (people & munitions) to an Article 5 trigger would be tragic and hypocritical given that it is the only member state (of NATO and ANZUS) to ever call on other members for, and receive, their full support during its adventures in Iraq & Afghanistan.

10:50 I’d be fine with conscription if they were put in their own units. Separate from active duty, also they can’t go overseas at all. So have them go through basic & ait, then have something like the SFAB unit (a unit only made up of leadership/trainers) go to NTC/JRTC with them 1-2 times. Also have them help with things stateside like the national guard during disasters or even have them participate in things like cleanups and soup kitchens. Then at the end of their service they of course get the choice to stay in and go to a normal unit as an E3.

I spent 23 years in the intelligence community and a good number of those years looking at the larger strategic picture of the Russia problem. I am embarrassed about how badly we fell for the mirror imaging paradigm and foolishly assumed that Russian manning, equipping, and training would be close to par with the US, and therefore a significant threat to NATO and US Forces. We honestly thought they were a, dare I say, a “near peer”, with their modern, state of the art T90s, SA-21/ 400s, MIGs and SU jets, LACMs, ALCMs, etc. In other words, we drastically over estimated thier system capabilities and severely discounted thier manpower and readiness issues. We would be likewise fools to over estimate a Chinese force who has yet to conduct any sort of major conduct with equipment that is also untested. And that is just the internal military issue facing China. They also have to contend with the imploding demographic issue at hand, with too few replacements for the aging population, a trickle down effect of the one child policy and the lack of interest of the current generation to reproduce in adequate numbers for many reasons, economics and the lack of upward mobility not withstanding. A war would only accelerate this demographics conundrum for China, as it is doing in Russia. Add to this issue, the quickly retracting Chinese economy. War is expensive, in blood and treasure. Massive wartime expenditures, and lack of international trade as a result of war, IE international sanctions, would further cripple the economy and future economic prospects for China. Add to that brain drain from those who flee to the West to avoid the draft, and the lack of males for future reproductive potential, all compounding the future economic issue. We are seeing this all play out in Russia. So despite the desperate desire to forcefully reunite Taiwan with mother China, the CCP will have no choice but prioritize thier own survival and punt on the issue. What good would it be to annihilate Taiwan, only to be stuck with the bill for re-building it when they can’t manage the infrastructure they already have now on the mainland? Bottom line, no, China will not invade Taiwan because win or lose, they will not have the resources to survive the aftermath. And the only thing they fear more than a free Taiwan is regime collapse.

The Soviets populated the OSS with doubles during the War, then sent even more fake defectors and former-Nazi intelligence officers who had been turned by the NKVD in the camps. Guys like George de Mohrenschildt who claimed to have fled the Bolsheviks became key assets, and one of the main Soviet psyops was to convince the US they were 10ft tall so we wouldn’t unilaterally nuke them. They genuinely believed we would do that after what they saw in Japan. When the Agency concocted Mockingbird, the Soviets hijacked it from within and drove a lot of the messaging in US media.

Not working for Aerometlab anymore. How quickly things change. How positive he sounds while mentioning it, knowing how serious the situation really was at this point. Do not idealize people. Just don't. :)

Dude, as a Brit living in Helsinki I have only known two guys who were into hunting moose. Only once a year. and one of those was actually Swedish. My observation is that most Fins live in the cities and towns in little apartments. On the other hand I know a lot of guys who were officers in the Finnish military, they do not have romantic notions of warfare.

That feeling of winning? Yeah I'm tracking you now. Kinda like going into a coalition facility saying "heyyyy America here!, we're going to the Superbowl"

As of recent data, approximately 56% of American adults possess a valid passport. This marks a significant increase from the mid-1990s when only about 10% held passports. BBC In comparison, passport ownership rates in other countries are notably higher. For instance: Australia: Approximately 70% of citizens hold passports. United Kingdom: Around 76% of the population possesses passports. Canada: About 66% of Canadians have passports.

I think Ryan misunderstood the question about drone swarms. I think the idea was that you dump thousands of drones out of a cargo plane, glide large "containers" of them to a geographic area, deploy them in a scattered/grid pattern, then they lock onto the first thermal signature, then kamikaze that target. Aerial, mobile, antipersonell mines.

100k autonomous drone swarm can be easily controlled by a few human operators that are trained in StarCraft.

AI on a drone will take a significant power. That is why only the latest Android and iOS devices have capabilities and chips to work with on-device LLMs. Putting an object recognition system on a drone is not that complex, but the full AI it's a problem. More battery, more power, more costs.

How would a f-15 SE utilizing 4 stealth escort drones perform as the Centerman? In what way would an f-35 be better? If any. You could push drones out 20 miles ahead and use the F-15 SE as the Quarterback + the rear seater could control the drones. F-15 SE holds many more missiles and most disadvantages go away with the stealth drones working ahead. Explain how I am wrong. I am not saying to get rid of f-35's we have but they cost too much for what they can do. Personally, I think you need manned aircraft with rear seater to control drones. With AI you could increase number of drones heavily too.

We were on the F-15 CTF working with systems development, sensors, weapons, things of that nature. F-15’s RCS is gigantic, so if it isn’t being tracked as it taxis, it will be once airborne. F-35 has the smallest RCS of any fighter today, is single engine, only requires 5 MMH/FH, has far superior sensors that are fused with each other, then interleaved with other F-35s and platforms that have compatibility. F-35s are the most affordable modern fighter both in acquisition and O&M, unlike any variant of the F-15. F-15 has 2 engines, EX and E models have 2 cockpits with tons of panels and boxes to maintain, complicated intake variable geometry and FLCS architecture, hydraulics, and things that add up to 20-38 MMH/FH. F-15 IR signature is huge as well, even in mil power settings due to the Titanium engine cowlings. Beautiful airplane, but at the end of its service life in the modern world. There is no F-15SE. That was a sad gimmick from Boeing, who built a bondo mock-up, nothing more.

@@LRRPFco52 I see you did not think about utilizing a 2 seat aircraft with drones escorts at all. F-15 SE, f-18 SH controlling stealth drones from the back seat. At the same time front seat would be busy sniping enemy aircraft from 80 miles out. The enemy would be too busy dealing with the drones to consider a shot at the F-15SE or F18SH. You are thinking about fighting the Russians in 1988 instead of how to beat China in 2026. I am also 100% open to a two seat stealth aircraft but not super expensive and should be used to established line of sight to stealth drones. Hang back and let the drones take the risks.

@@USAmbro24 So I'm somebody that is aware of things with certain production lots of the F-4D and jet-powered drones. That was 50 years ahead of people who talk about WSOs steering drones- already done. The problem once again is the F15 RCS. 80 nautical miles is larger than most Air-to-Air weapon system WEZ. We don't need a WSO to steer drones anymore because they can be tasked on semi-autonomous profiles. You also don't want comms with data links that are easily intercepted like with legacy birds (F-15, F-16). Only F-22A and F-35s have Low Probability of Intercept data links. It's a totally different sensor/ antenna architecture that doesn't exist in 4th Gen. There are people way ahead of the power curve who've been working on these things for generations. Almost none of it is in the public light.

34:24 call of duty advanced warfare edition has a brief storyline where you fight off a drone swarm. I thought that the way it was handled was utterly inadequate and the characters would easily have been KIA.
