They testified that at some point Lyle…Did things to Eric when they were kids. They didn’t really understand the gravity of what it was because it was so normalized by their father doing that stuff and much worse. That is a part of their trauma and Eric forgave Lyle for that. Now imagine going through that and now that story is being twisted to be even worse by insinuating that they liked it with each other. That’s pretty horrific, especially since there’s so many smooth brained mouth breathers will take so much of this as truth. It won’t impact him at all because it’s not his life, and he’s making millions. But those two brothers are locked away forever without even so much as a warning beforehand that they would be portrayed as potential incestuous psychopaths.

After seeing the trailers for the series I did a bunch of research on the Menéndez brothers' case and then when finally sat down to see it I was _appalled_ by the choices made by Murphy and his team. Putting aside that it's arguably pretty disrespectful to falsely portray a _real life_ victim of incestuous childhood sexual abuse as doing the same, but it doesn't even do anything for the narrative - what does adding the incest do except try to make them seem extra "fucked up"? They shot their abusive parents in their living room, I think that's already enough fodder in the "fucked up" department without adding this extra layer of creepily almost fetishized abuse. Edit: Also _Jesus_ if someone implied the knew my perspective about my life, especially when it came to any abuse I suffered, without talking to me even once, I would be on death row myself pretty quickly.

Lyle did say that he done what his dad did to him (with a toothbrush) once to his brother, but thats the affects of incestuous sexual abuse. If that is all you know at a young age, you think this behavior is normal. Especially if the dad is assaulting and raping them and also abuse from the mother, it becomes conviluded in regards to the sibling/parental relationship aspect in regards to whats right and wrong ect. They suffered extreme abuse from their pedophile father and allowing mother. If these were 2 sisters im sure people would be more understanding. I hope if this case intrigues anyone and want to understand, I hope they look into long term affects of incestuous sexual abuse, and other types in regards to what they experienced. I hope the new evidence gives them the opportunity to get out and adjust to the outside world and live the rest of their lives free.

Honestly, this does not surprise me when it comes to Ryan Murphy and his real life/true crime series. I noticed he’s been just going along with misinformation, rumors and gossip making these series. It started with Feud: Betty and Joan. He got sued by the legendary actress Olivia de Havilland for the series portrayal of her. He’s since been sued by others over similar issues and such. The man doesn’t even care at this point. All he cares about is the views, ratings, and awards some of his projects have been given to him. He needs to be stopped. I used to be a fan of his work. Now after all seeing how he treats victims and people involved in these real life stories in his series. It has left a bad taste in my mouth. I can’t support his projects any longer. He has such a nasty attitude when he gets called out for his work. I lost respect for him.

@@Tonygunk6969 Lyle did confess to m*lesting Erik and apologized to him for it during the trial. However, the incident happened when they were both little kids, and was a part of the cycle of abuse (this behavior was normalized to Lyle by Jose, and Lyle replicated the behavior with someone else. In most cases of COCSA or sibling-on-sibling incest, the perpetrator experienced SA themselves). The problem was the portrayal of this as “consensual” incest between brothers, instead of a one-off instance of SA. It seems like Ryan Murphy has a thinly-veiled fetish…

He's scheduled to die on October 17th. it’s hard to present evidence in child sex abuse cases and there is some evidence to say that the abuse DID happen. there was the letter found written by erik to his cousin andy cano (which was the same cousin that testified for the brothers in court) seven months before the murder happened where he admits the abuse is still happening. there was an envelope with photos of the boys naked which had a focus of their lower bodies/private areas. other cousins that would stay over also said that there was an area of the house that they weren’t allowed in when jose would take the boys in there and kitty would make sure they didn’t go near. another cousin approach kitty when lyle had told her about his dad touching him and kitty ignored it and said that he was lying. many people have said that jose would make the boys shower with them as well. and for the fact that the ENTIRE family stands with the boys and believes they are somewhat innocent, i think really says enough. there’s a lot of evidence to say the abuse happened whether you want to believe it or not. that’s not even all of it, but it’s definitely all there.

I have a coworker whose 19, a few weeks ago she asked me what I know about the Menendez brothers. I said I know they killed their parents and claimed sexual abuse but that was it. She started talking about how she believes they were sexually abused by their father. A few weeks later she asked me what I knew about them again, and I was like "Haha you've asked me this already." and she was like "Oh so you know about the case?" and I was like "yeah..." and she literally goes "Yeah I don't think they were sexually abused." And having remembered what she said previously I asked why. She started talking about this tv show and then said something about "new evidence from an ex-girlfriend claiming one of the boys told her they lied about it all" and I realized while she was telling me this she was watching the tv show with an airpod in. I hadn't heard of this show before that moment but because she said it's a netflix orignal and compared it to "Dahmer" and "The Act" I knew what to expect. I tried to understand Ryan’s POV, but all of the sensationalising resulted in the story looking like an unserious incestuous fantasy. From the kiss to the shower scene to being naked almost every episode for no clear reason other than flaunting the actors’ attractiveness. Even though he claims he wanted to capture all perspectives of the story for the show, it just made the brothers look insincere and the abuse to be fabricated with constant conflicting scenes. I find the fixation on the killers sexuality in part to make them more sympathetic characters in everyone of these shows to be weird, like if you were to watch the show he's made on Aaron Hernandez now knowing nothing about that case you'd assume he killed people just cause he had to repress his sexuality cause that is the shows focus. Also why show the body of the actress from poltergiest who was murdered? Why the menedez shower scenes? why include the gacy murder scene in his dahmer show? Those scenes made me more uncomfortable than anything else in these shows cause of how unnecessary they were, like there's a detachment from the fact that you are portraying real people here and maybe you should not relish in these things.

So Erik did tell someone and the court said Cano was lying which baffles me. And recently a man named Roy Rosselló came out saying that Jose, the boys ‘father’, potentially drugged his wine and took him to a room and r*ped him back in the mid 1980’s so the fact that multiple people knew the father was a creep and the jury still say the brother didn’t have the ‘equipment’ for sexual assault is just beyond me and they need a re-trial with the new evidence and testimonies

Best thing Ryan could’ve done was requested a visit with them, asked them if he could make a show about them and ask about certain events in their lives so it could be as accurate as possible. Not creating or adding extra bits that are not true, also glamourising certain aspects. No wonder the brothers are pissed, their story was mistold.

I'm pretty sure that this show is an example of most historical content that came out of Hollywood ever. And, more importantly, our actual history books in schools. I'm not claiming that it's all related in a conspiratorial way, but just that humans retelling stories tend to add a bit of personal opinion, and artistic license. We have a much better view of psychology than ever before, and we're less likely to shame normal human behaviors. For example, I'm 49, and when I was in middle school we had a "special ed" classroom for what would now be the ADHD kids. Any actual special needs person wasn't integrated into "normal society" schools, they had their own schools, or didn't go at all. So, if you had any sort of learning disability, it was unlikely that you, or your parents, would even say anything because it meant that you'd be put into the special ed room with the kids who had something wrong with them. So, my point is, how can we ever trust what anyone thaought was acceptable to put into history books when so much judgment, bias, and lying occurs just to save face? Apart from the actual facts, such as dates, it's probably more fiction than we ever imagined. I happen to love Ryan Murphy's storytelling, and this show is entertaining. Quentin Tarantino included the Manson Family in his film, and that wasn't factual either. None of that negates the fact that the Menendez brothers deserve another chance with our current psychology standatds as a foundation.

it's like, sure, in a vacuum , with no real life context, the show is good, but i just can't separate it from the real life impact it has, and it grosses me out. plus, at least the incest theory, despite having no place there IMO, is framed as just a theory, it's not mean to be taken as truth, but there is a scene in episode 2 between the brothers that is fully just there to be sexual and get people to talk about the show, and it's just so gross to me that it's included. i hear the law and order version of the story was better handled in terms of factual information and realism, and from watching episode one, it's already way different vibes

After watching the whole show, it's pretty clear to me that most if not all of what's shown is supposed to be understood to have never happened. The series shows a bunch of versions of what could have happened based on what the brothers said at different points along the way, or what various people theorized could have happened. It's clear by the end of the show that the point wasn't to show what actually happened, but to make the point that no one besides the brothers will ever know the truth. And I think that's an important point that the critics of the show (like the family) obviously missed. (That's not to defend the director in not speaking to the brothers. I think he should have. But i think people are deliberately misreading the show and misrepresenting its message based on the fact that it includes false information, which is kind of the point.)

I think my interest in true crime is less “I wish I had the killer’s side of things” and more “I wish the killer had spoken with a therapist whose view might shed light on why they became what they did.” I don’t really want to hear from the killer in most circumstances, my motive comes from wanting to learn more about the human mind and the ways it can be twisted.

I don’t think the incest was presented as fact - throughout the series, they would sort of "play out" different versions, making the events look different each time. But I completely agree that it's wild no family members were involved or interviewed, and the show definitely leaned toward the "liars and sociopaths" narrative, especially towards the end of the series. I had never heard anything about this before, and after watching the series alone, I would have concluded there was no abuse and that they invented everything. So I’m not sure what he’s talking about when he says it’s "the best thing that happened." It also felt like they intentionally excluded the family's support from the "plot". At one point, the family seems concerned and hires a lawyer, but their screen time fades, giving the impression that the brothers didn’t have any support. It leaves a very bad impression. I don’t care to rewatch the series to look for further proof, but the creator clearly had their own conclusion about what happened and wove it into the show. I’m glad for the internet, because with all the information I see now, I can at least retroactively form my doubts about the certainty with which the series presents its "answer" to what happened with the brothers.

I did finish the show just yesterday, and while i don't think it's a moral thing to present the real boys in a movie without them actively being involved in their own portrayal, i somehow still saw it as a movie, i genuinely did not end up with a guilty/not guilty verdict in my mind, and am genuinely interested in an ACTUAL documentary. The incest part i honestly found it being introduced more because it has a shock value and just as a theory, i didn't feel the movie said "this is what ACTUALLY happened" but more like "this is what was speculated and we're going to show it to you so you can clutch your pearls and remember this movie". I do find it disrespectful for him to not speak to the boys but i guess he already thought he had all the "facts" because of their court hearings snd whatever else there is out there that they spoke on. Anyway, if anything this made me more interested in this case because ultimately i couldn't finish the movie with a clear opinion.

The audacity of this man is outrageous, how can you with a good conscious claim ro know someone's perspective yet make no effort to talk to them directly??? The case is very famous it wouldn't have taken much to gather public attention to new evidence in my opinion and even then what he did is still disgusting. These are living people and he's handling their life story and trauma like with no care and no consideration. Like any other fictional movie script. I didn't watch the first season and I'm definitely not watching this one, like you said if the family and people directly involved are slaming it then i have absolutely no interest in it.

Great breakdown of the situation. I'm quite curious about your opinion of Elephant if you ever watched that Gus Van Sant film. It's been like 20 years but I remember a shower scene which wasn't incest but the fact that the movie was obviously based on Columbine ( unofficially) was quite uncomfortable, like he inserted gay erotica into his film about a massacre of mostly schoolkids.

The decision to not talk to the brothers isn’t truly shocking…maybe I watched a different show but I think we got the story completely unbiased from all sides. Ryan took information from therapy notes, the trials, the recordings from the book Norma wrote, interviews with the boys from around the time it happened, hearsay (he made it obvious when it was hearsay like the shower scene). Not interviewing the brothers may have been in an effort to not develop a bias towards them. We were presented with all sides. And unpopular opinion, The truth is, we know their perspective they’ve said it multiple times. There’s hourssss of the brothers talking about what happened. Both of their whole trials are on KZbin. Their full testimonies are on KZbin. That is there perspective. Therapy recordings from Ozeil. That is their perspective. The only thing different now would be “their perspective: thirty years later.” But Ryan was making a show about them and their mindset at the time they were young adults so their perspective on these now as a reflection of middle aged adults would’ve skewed and been different and not as authentic to who they were as teenagers because they’ve had time to grow and develop. (Same way as you probably would’ve done, acted, said, things differently if you knew what you know now at 30 or whatever rather than 13) and Ryan didn’t imply the boys committing incest was fact, the shower scene was a portrayal of a rumor Dunn heard. He had other scene in the show that we aren’t to take as law either. JUST LIKE he included a death scene where the boys got shot by their parents which we Know isn’t what happened. It’s just a portrayal of what the boys thought would happen. There are also two shooting scenes. One where the boys go in to shoot their parents through the front door when they are awake watching tv. Another presented during the second case when they are sleeping. We also got multiple boat scenes at through out the series all portraying the boys acting differently. Scared in the first scene, enjoying themselves in the second, and plotting in the third (last scene.) this isn’t a “this is exactly what happened” show at least imo. It’s a “this is all the information we have. I’m presenting it to you all at once. Facts, hearsay, recordings, notes. Here’s all of it. You decide what you believe.” Show

I was pretty versed on the case before Monsters came out, I was so excited but as soon as the story stopped following what I believed to be true, I couldn't continue watching. Which is too bad, the acting and producing was top notch. Would of been way more compelling if it was the truth and not random assumptions. Ryan Murphy has victimized them AGAIN. Their own documentary would of brought this back into the light regardless of his stupid show.
