Ryan Ramble: The Old World (First Impressions)

In this episode, we're starting a potentially new series where Ryan goes solo, Podcast-style, and rambles on about whatever he's feeling inspired to babble about. It's like a TableTalk, but much less social.
In this iteration, we kick off the inevitable conversation about The Old World, what Ryan's thoughts are of how the new-old game fits in with the AoS world, and how he got to where he's at in his hobby, in a meta sense. I would love if you jumped more into Old World. I used to watch your content all the time but I haven't really played AOS since 2nd edition. Would for sure watch more if you started covering Old World in the same way you have AOS.

I really disagreed with your take that everything "feels samey" with The Old World but was having difficulty putting it into words but I think I figured it out. The Old World is like Legos. Each individual brick may only have a slight different. Maybe it's a little longer. Maybe it's a little shorter. Maybe it's a little wider. But what matters is that each army has a different set of bricks available to them and that changes completely what you're able to put together and allows you to express within an army. AoS, by comparison, is more like action figures. It may look cooler than what I could build with some legos, but it's plug and play. You pick your subfaction and then plug in the subfaction models. It's cool, it's bespoke, I like it, but it's not the same as looking at a pile of random pieces and saying "How can I turn this into a functioning army?"

Yeah, I think I just didn’t express it in a way that clicked with you upon first listen, because I totally agree with you. Not saying Old World armies don’t have character, but that details are very similar until you get down to that granular level, like you said. But even if it was totally flat and just a skin swap, part of what I’m saying is that that actually is refreshing for me, coming from competitive AoS land. I've been pretty excited for old world. I like AoS, but miss rank & flank warhammer, and still have two armies worth of oldhammer minis (tomb kings & vamp counts) that I've been slowly rebasing. I've only had a single game yet, & there's def some jank to work out, but imo it's a pretty solid puting for the return of warhammer fantasy, at least rules-wise. Model availability is a major problem though. Not for me, sure, but while there's a fair bit of hype around old world currentlt, I am worried about that hype dying before people are able to actually get armues together, as happened locally with imperialis and horus heresy.

Thanks for the feedback Malisteen. Yeah, the logistics problems have definitely been a problem for GW as of late, but the buzz is definitely growing for Old World, and considering the adoption lag time needed (learning the rules, building, painting, rebasing), I have a feeling it won’t end up hitting as hard as we fear. But yeah, def hoping it really takes off!

I am 20 min in - I got it u got bored and then hey ho the old world arrived - but Man the old world is the same in regards of gaming issue like AoS has and 40K. There is a reason behind WHF was not popular in the end anymore and they did not fix it. The game is so two dimensional like 40K and whf was designed years ago. Ur units are defined by damage or defense. The game is about kill points - play 10 games and tell me it is exciting … I dunno believe it. And by that means - look most people do not have a 2k army yet but TO still bring in the rule of 3 … which GW covered no up. I played as you since 2nd edition 40K but unluckily I did not pass WHF. I know it will die - it is in the end all the time the same. Kill more …

Competitive kills the GW games. It is not designed for that. They try but it is far away. All people have a lot of fun when they step back and do it as a hobby.
