Oh, thank you for this ! I recently re-watched Ryan's Daughter, and I was thinking about how much I loved it - and how much I enjoyed the breath-taking Irish landscape. Though the village and roads are gone, it is as beautiful as ever. It truly fills my senses to see such beauty.

Though the uncredited beach scenes - on that long wide beach- is not in Ireland. Those scenes were film on Long Beach/Noordhoek on the Cape Peninsular outside Cape Town on the way to Cape Point.

The whole lot was offered to the people of Kerry by David Lean... Gratis, but Kerry being Kerry and Ireland being Ireland they bulldozed the village and allowed the schoolhouses go to ruin They don't need any more tourists. They don't deserve any more tourists. Vandalism on stilts Fury doesn't even describe the emotion

Another David Lean masterpiece Ryan’s Daughter. As always the scenery is spectacular. He caught the poverty + hatred of the English well. One of my favourite films. 💕

Hi Trevor, thanks for posting this. I'm just back from a 5 day trip around the ring of Kerry and I tried to find the school house and I couldn't. If they can use the Skelligs for bloody Star Wars, surely they could promote Ryan's Daughter then and now, like they did with the Quiet Man, such a waste of opportunity for a stunning part of Ireland.

I know I'm 5 years late, but I'll still post. The 'Extras' section of the DVD shows how the village was built from scratch as a film set, meticulously recreating a small settlement.

They should promote the location. It's a hidden gem. It would do a lot for the community. Start a museum with the film as the theme. Upgrade the locations.

*So, when Lean finish filming, the studio donated the village and the schoolhouse to the people of the area; however, the buildings were donated to two or three different owners and disputes started. That is why one morning the local authorities decided to demolish the village buildings and the only one that survived was the schoolhouse. SAD!*

A masterful film that you have to watch twice to appreciate. The casting is exceptional and the scenes of West Kerry’s beauty memorising. The script, is a love story set immediately before the period of independence for Ireland. The relationship ends tragically but not without hope. Directed by David Lean, scripted by Robert Bolt and filmed by Freddie Young - All masters of their craft. This film could quite easily have won half a dozen Oscar’s but in the event walked away with two.

Most of Irelands cultural heritage is falling down, ruined or neglected. There are hundreds of great buildings and houses left to rot even in the cities, it's as if they either Don't care or are embarrassed by their culture. Such a pity because it's an amazing country that hs know wonderful architects and artists.

Such shortsightedness. The historical significance of the time in which it was set, and the village’s authenticity should have been enough for Bord Fáilte to work to find a partnership to preserve this. It could indeed have been an extraordinary working village as a tourist site. Look at Dingle town.

When they finished shooting the film “The quiet man “ the people of Cong where it was shot realised that there was potential in preserving the locations and to this day a thriving tourist industry revolves around them, apparently every day at 3pm the film is screened in the neighbouring Ashford castle hotel were John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and the rest of the film’s crew resided during the making of this classic.

Many of the sets were taken down after filming.except structures which already existed. The road is the only evidence of where the village was. Bit like movie far and away. Because of the location in pictuesque location.often the film contracts stipulate the locations put back as they were. May have changed in recent times but thats why locations like this appear run down or nothing left. The quiet man was filmed aroung cong in co mayo which was an existing village and around grounds of ashford castle....

There's some interesting stories about Robert Mitchum during his time in dingle. One was that he was driving from his hotel to the film set when a farmer was moving his sheep along the road, Mitchum wanted him to clear the road and asked do you know who I am. The farmer didn't have a bulls motion who he was. Not many houses in Ireland had televisions back then.

The producers asked the local council if they wanted the village left. They turned them down so it was dismantled and taken away. A decision the locals bitterly regretted. When the film came out and was a phenomenal success people from all over the world wanted to visit. The locals asked the producers to put it back up, lol, but too late. With the increase in tourism they could’ve built a hotel, shops, etc. The village would still have been an attraction today, I would visit it if it was there. After that mistake I think they couldn’t be bothered with just the schoolhouse and it was left to ruin. Imagine a hotel next to the schoolhouse with that view out to sea. Marvellous

I don't understand the purpose of this video. You are showing us long-discarded film sets, but the movie was about human experience and, particularly, the historical Ireland in which my parents grew up. Are you trying to diminish the power of the imagery? Seriously - what is your point???
@TrevorReadStupidBoy Жыл бұрын
What?!! Think you are overthinking here. It’s simply a video to show how the film sets look now- nothing to do with diminishing the beautiful landscape which I am very fortunate to call home. If you find it offensive- then don’t watch it! Thank you 😊
