Whitney is a storyteller. Always giving the song just what it needs. BUT this is the one song Whitney decided she was going to really show out! And it’s just insane!

Also, you’re right, Whitney Houston is THEE best live singer of all time. Her live performances are often much better than the recordings and along with her stage presence they make her unbelievable to watch live

U are so right, she is to this day the best live performer….but it’s because she’s not just singing the song, she goes all in and spills out her soul….and u were also right in the way how she can make u feel that you are the only other person in the room as she is singing it to you… this is a very rare recording and I’m so happy you guys loved it and hear how special she was ❤❤

Wether it’s Whitney or Jennifer Holiday or Jennifer Hudson singing, this song is soooo powerful.

I appreciate listening to you two discovering and appreciating Whitney's greatness. She did write/co-write a handful of her songs; they just weren't typically chosen as singles. A couple of examples include Queen Of The Night and Count On Me from The Bodyguard and Waiting To Exhale soundtracks.

I am changing is from the dreamgirls Broadway show (1981) and the 2006 film of the same name which was sung by Jennifer Hudson in the movie and Jennifer Holiday on the 1981 Broadway version

Well that was a whirlwind of vocal genius!! Her voice at this time had no limits! Like there was no ceiling to it! Btw, Dionne Warwick is her cousin. This was after the release of her first album. Thanks again. Bring on the next.

Yes, she was pausing even longer, there is a version somewhere that’s uncut and it keeps building

So good! I really hope "didn't we almost have it all" saratoga springs is in the top 2 one of her best..
@Bigdrip8402 ай бұрын
This song is from dreamgirls, she sang it best but Jennifer Hudson has a more radio friendly version that's really good too! The end grunts were church, yes they cut out some of the pauses and grunts. This was 1 year into her career , she may be opening for Luther vandross here. Her first album came out in 85, but it didn't take off til 86, she shit to superstardom faster than any before or after her.

Dionne Warwick is Whitney’s cousin.
@jobuck8792 ай бұрын
Funny you mention the whole Mozart thing…Madonna said Whitney was mediocre because she was jealous of voice. Also Jennifer Holiday who sung this song in the theatre musical called Dreamgirls sent out a message for Whitney to stop singing this…I can’t confirm nor deny that but as someone who was well into adulthood by 1986, I remember this being circulated. Whitney was told by her mom to endure yourself to be a good singer, start by singing gospel because once you can sing gospel there’s nothing you can’t sing. Whitney could sing almost any genre of music…gospel, pop, rocky, RnB, jazz, Broadway and she even did a little bit of opera that stunned Sting and Pavarotti. Whitney is the greatest vocalist of all time.

The Jennifer Holiday story is true.
@agijarocka9968Ай бұрын
yeah the pauses are even longer and there are more of the 'ME!!'- trippy part. There is video of WH performing this song at Arista Records birthday party. And by the way to give it some context 'I am changing' and 'And I am telling you' are both originally performed masterfully by Jennifer Holliday in Dreamgirls musical. So I would argue, to trully get Whitney early performances you may have to start with Jeniffer Holliday at Tony Awards and it will all make sense;) It explains the 'theatrical' flavour to early WH recordings in my opinion- yes or yes? :)
@jamesgeorge52762 ай бұрын
There is a video of her singing this live, She was singing for Clive Davis and some special invited guests for a private showcasing of Whitney's extraordinary singing ability right before she dropped her debut album!! You guys definitely have to pull it up and watch it!! Its absolutely Amazing!!😊 It actually was at the Arista Records 10th celebration Celebration Party.

Her performance in that video was not on this level. She sounded really winded.
@jobuck8792 ай бұрын
@@Realviews603 That performance was back in 1984. By the time this performance came along, she had grown into a vocal tsunami and she was well into her legendary status. This is the moment we all knew that this woman singing live is untouchable. Whitney sang so effortlessly and her story telling was unbelievable.
@lordvoldemort57252 ай бұрын
@@Realviews603I think she sounded winded because she couldn’t take her time with the song like she could in this video. The tempo was slower in this one, which allowed her to do some story telling.

I just need to know one thing: did Ryan request Saving All My Love For You (Japan 1991)? Her most sublime performance, evah. Still waiting on Apple Cider to give us a 4K remaster.

overrated version. The London 1986 version with the F5 -G5 belt run is superior and some versions from 1987 and even March 15 1991 is superior

I think she was just coming up. LMAO, by the time of this concert she had already had 3 number one hits from her debut album which by this point was well on its way to becoming what was then the biggest selling debut album of all time (14 million and counting). her second album released just about a year after this also went on to sell over 10 million copies in the U.S. She Also still holds the record for most number 1 hits in a row with 7. Legend. so sad what happened to her.
