One of her most under-rated songs. She believes this, and in turn, makes us believe. I still grieve her loss. Her singing still brings goosebumps and tears.

How about the way she goes from that silky practically "talk" singing to "light their way when the darkness surrounds them," the way that builds...Jesus..Anybody can take a singing lesson, but the fact is obvious, hit-making singing like Karen's is a gift, no way to replicate it. Funny how she never seemed to realize that, cocky she was not. Even when John Lennon stops her in a restaurant to tell her how great she is.

If that is the link to her depression, her melancholy then that condition went into the magic alchemy that made up her voice and the way she sang a song. Even on "Close to You," and "We' ve Only Begun" you can hear it, not depression per se; detachment. She was a girl who played drums, who wanted to be anonymous/ backround with personal issues of identity who wanted to work out all that in private.

Karen was known in the music business for being "One take Karen." She always had perfect pitch and tone. She needed no rehearsal. I truly love her music and listen to her always. Although no longer physically with us, she left an incredible musical legacy!
@xaosnox Жыл бұрын
I love how people who don’t work in this industry look at it. No rehearsal?!?! They rehearsed EVERYTHING to the point that it was almost too perfect. They might as well have been robots. Every word, breath, motion, etc. was rehearsed to perfection. That's how you get things done in one take. I've had one or two songs that I recorded where the first take of a verse or other section was a "one-take" wonder, but that was mostly driven by budget and circumstance. With Karen and Richard, everything was rehearsed to perfection. Of only she would have waited a few more years. Breast implants and other cosmetic surgery developments could have given her more of a balanced top and bottom. Not that she needed it, but it would have given her more confidence about her looks. Her sister didn't know how to dress her, either. The wardrobe choices often made her look more bottom heavy, like light culottes with dark tops. I'm not a fashion guru, but I work color, and anyone dressing someone for stage performances should know enough to avoid those mistakes. Also, it's important to remember that she died of refeeding syndrome after she'd started gaining weight.

I've been a singer songwriter in Nashville and I've noticed something about Karen that not to many people realize but I've watch her sing the same song in different videos and at different venues and I've noticed that her timing, pitch and tone are identical every time she sings it. It's amazing. I bet if you played her singing the same song in two different videos and started them at the same time the lip sinking would match identically. She truly was amazing and she had such a strong voice. I'm a 61 year old man and I'm not ashamed to say I cry every time I listen to her sing. If I make it to heaven I hope I get to meat her and hug her one time. I truly love her and miss her so much. She had such a beautiful voice and died way way to young. Richard was very talented also. He's the one that put all the music together and the harmonies. Most of his arrangements and harmonies are so beautiful and together they truly were THE CARPENTERS. God Bless you Karen I truly hope to meet you someday.

This song came to mind today as i was taking my daily walk and little dog came running down the road to greet me. It had a big gash in its neck and it was as if it was begging me for help. Pretty sure someone just dumped it as female and living in country, some cruel humans do such things. No neighbors claimed it. Taking it to vet in morning to get her checked out. She's mine now and I'm blessed to have her come into my life. God knew i would take care of her. Their best song! The music and the message are pure and real. I was a firefighter for more than 20 years, and to me, who has seen the worst that life can do to children, and animals, this song is both a prayer and a Commission; " keep them safe, keep them warm, light their way when the darkness surrounds them, give them love, let it shine all around them." I know the darkness, as I've been there. I've held children in my arms. I had to listen to a mother scream for her daughters, caught in a fast moving apartment fire. I've had to hose down A child's blood from a street. This is why, every time I was on the way to an emergency, this song played in my brain. Thirty-one years after I was seriously injured in a fire, the song still means so very much to me. May all of the world hear it, and may the children be safe and warm.

But - God bless the elderly also, for the wisdom and the knowledge they may impart to us. And, God give us the intelligence to LEARN from the past - and not repeat the mistakes - ere we, once more, justify the sapient observation of philosopher George Santayana who said (probably with a certain resignation about the human condition): "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" and "Only the dead have seen the end of war." If mankind EVER becomes fully enlightened (highly conjectural), then, and only then, will the beasts and the children become fully blessed...

Nia = spot on! When I hear and see somtehing extremely beautiful, I say that it is ethereal - not of this world. When I hear Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, I thing the same thing - their songs were ethereal.....

When I was in 6TH Grade 1972, our music teacher played this in class on the portable turntable set. Even with the terrible speakers typical of that era, my young ears heard the most beautiful VOICE ever 😍😇😢. Still to this day, I rest my case as my claim has stood the time!

It is her interpretation of the songs she would sing that was just magical. And we are all blessed, and sad at the same time.

Have not listened to this song in a long time. I loved it when I was in my early 20's - and listening to this song again now when I am near 60 brings back memories, including how beautiful Karen's voice was. There is a story (true, I believe) about Karen sitting in Central Park in NY when a "stranger" walked by - "Beautiful voice, Luv" - the stranger was John Lennon.

I grew up happily listening to the Carpenters! We had some tough times in the 60's and 70's, as a generation, my family was no exception. Karen Carpenter Blesses Us all, Beast s and children, with her flawless, heavenly voice and prayers sent from above!

Thank you & I agree with all of your comments! One of the greatest, most beautiful voices in the past 50 years without question. Karen's my favorite singer all time. She actually was quite pretty and beautiful in her young twenties. Of course her voice has so much internal beauty. It's a pity what happened to her later. She was already beautiful, no need to lose so much weight. I miss the Beautiful and Sweet Karen Carpenter.

Thank you Karen. You are an inspiration. I saw the movie, same titled, Bless the Beasts and the Children, when I was a child in the ‘70’s, and it changed my life, and outlook on our planet, and the children and animals, and the future of all of us, forever. Once we destroy the planet, it will gone forever. Think about what is precious to you most-now hold onto that, for dear life.

She did have a beautiful voice.In 1963 I moved from Paris to live with my cousin Dominic that lived two doors down from Karen and family. We walked Together to school every day.I became a very close friend.She had a crush on me, and I didn't speak English very good at all. We lived in Downey Calif. When I moved we stayed v.close.I would never miss a Christmas without stopping. When her mother called me at the end it didn't surprise me.I jumped on a plane and was with the family and good friends at the end.

Karen evokes such wonderful memories...great memories tied into her melancholy music...highs and lows. If you can't connect with your feelings when listening to this voice and the songs of The Carpenters, then you don't feel anything at all. What a loss to the world...period. Angels are sounding better. Our loss was their gain.
