Art the Clown is an interesting slasher. While Jason and Michael Myers are unrelenting, emotionless superhuman monsters, Art seems to be a high-functioning killer. I mean, he's aware of his appearance enough to use a coin-op laundromat to wash his costume. Towards the end, he spits at Sierra, a conscious display of hate I can't imagine other slashers doing. He only kills on Halloween... I can assume he's capable of taking off his makeup and costume and passing as a normal guy the rest of the year. Sure, he might be supernatural, but he displays evil human characteristics which make him super scary.

I haven't watched either terrifier but i've seen clips ,not sure i can stomach the bleach salt scene and it sounds like the second movie is way too long in duration . But as OTT as Art the clown is ... the thought of him without his costume and makeup just 'casually' walking about outside of Halloween, is really creepy and disturbing and something i never thought about. But if he only Kills /goes on a psychotic rampage on Halloween, then it makes you wonder what is he doing for the rest of the time?. I roll my eyes every time they make a killer UN killable and supernatural though .

@@gemstar7286 Terrifier two didnt feel too long watching it, I caught it 3 times (3 different groups) in theaters and honestly the first one FEELS longer. If you arnt much into horror/gore then yeah it might be too much but I didnt see anyone leave the theater at any of the 3 showings i saw. Terrifier is a special case for me with him being supernatural because if he WASNT then the movies would be even more ridiculous, Like in the first one he saws through a woman long ways in all of 15 seconds....if he WASNT supernatural that scene would be laughably bad.

I think the little clown girl in T2 might be connected to the first movie. In the newspaper that they look at, her name is "Emily Crane", Emily being what the Cat Lady in T1 named the porcelain doll she mothered like a real child. I'm just theorising here but what if the clown girl was the cat lady's daughter prior to Art killing her, making the mother go insane and continue trying to parent her deceased daughter through the porcelain doll. Without this context, one could see her as a crazy, homeless cat lady but I can't help but feel she contributed more to the story. The make-up is based on Pierrot, A French addition to Commedia dell'Arte. Pierrot is romantic, usually an unrequited lover. I found it fascinating that the actor playing Art used some of the tropes of Pierrot in the scene you showed from the pizza place.

I think it's the fear of the Killer that wants to hurt you in a way that makes you live as long as possible so you can suffer maximum pain and terror. It's the type of evil that can only be done by a human. It's supernatural in a way that doesn't go beyond what we think is possible in nature but supernatural in a way that is more cruel than anything you would fine in nature. Human cruelty to the extreme, the ideology of good and evil that humans created taken to its extreme.

@@borek92 Agreed. Saw 1 has the same kind of vibe as Se7en, it's more of a psychological mystery thriller with a few elements of disturbing violence in it than a horror movie. I unironically love all the Saw movies (except 3D and Spiral, even I can't defend those) but they definitely changed tone after the first one and became a lot more baroque and OTT almost to the point of self-parody. I quite like that, though, I always used to love trying to work out what the convoluted, Shyamalanesque twists would be before the reveal. What I will say is that the latest one, X, went back to the more grounded, character-based tone of the first movie while still maintaining enough fun elements like convoluted traps and a slightly ridiculous twist to make for a nice balance. Which is probably why it's my favourite out of the entire franchise (I even prefer it to 1).

Art is so sadistic in his approach. And he took loving his craft to whole another lvl. Where the likes of Jason, Michael Myers kill their victims almost emotionlessy, Art is doing it with excitement and taking pleasure from every move. Even Freddy who likes to torture his victims isn't as sadistic as Art, cause Art the Clown pulls every trick in the book to break his prey and scar it for the rest of its life (if it manages to survive). Also, 1:14 - I just cannot watch at this frame of Art and not burst out laughing. It's so dam hilarious.

He's over-the-top for the sake of being over-the-top, but he's also has a mysterious backstory that the writers seem (thankfully) reluctant to reveal. He's perfect for a slasher grindhouse villain. Not only one of your most interesting analysis, but perhaps the most interesting take on these films I've seen. While I can't nor want to say I *like* Art as a character, there was something endearing about his presence in the first film. All of which was enhanced by the subversion of pure evil overcoming any shred of humanity. It all stuck with me, like a grim reminder that as much as society celebrates slasher villains, they're monsters. Then the sequel comes out and it all felt cheapened, leaning hard into the genre boundaries that the first pushed against. So instead of leaving me with thoughts reflecting on our strange relationship with and the culture surrounding slasher villains, I'm left wondering what kind of message the first movie had at all, and if I was just looking too hard between the lines. All that said, Leone does seem like a real hardworking guy and I love success stories like his so I'll be more than happy to see the next film, but I'll be going in with lower expectations in most areas except for the unrelenting brutality.

I thought the implication was that Art was somehow Sienna's father, who drew the prophetic comic images and later brought them to reality. I think it's stated that he died of a brain tumor, that and like, hereditary schizophrenia could've messed with his personality and caused him to become Art the clown. And also gave him supernatural slasher villain powers(?) Also, the scenes with the little brother could be seen as implying being a pyscho killer is hereditary in the male line. Also, this gives the final battle the subtext that the kids have overcome the grief over losing their father they've struggled with throughout the film by literally killing whatever remains of their father.

Been waiting for this! Terrifier gets a lot of flack for being "torture porn" and "mean spirited horror" (which is understandable) but I think it has a certain charm to it. The ending of Terrifier 1 was a double subversion because the final girl is killed and the killer used a gun, which is kind forbidden for slashers, that as the name sugest, must use sharp melee weapons. Art pulling a gun on the final girl was he basically saying "f*ck the rules"

Art pulling out the gun was such an awesome twist. Prior to that I didn't even think of guns as a possibility, probably due to their lack of presence in slasher films. Whenever a gun does show up in slashers, it's usually just the police in the last act. So even though it seems kind of obvious for a killer who doesn't want to be overtaken to carry a gun, I genuinely had an "Oh fuck!" moment when he shot her.

I went to see Terrifier 2 and the theatre was sold out. It was probably one of my favorite movie experiences ever. Art was such a fun killer because he looked like he was having the time of his life the whole movie.

I just don't see how these are exceptionally violent and/or cruel. It's over-the-top, ghoulish, comic book violence. It's on par with 'The Evil Dead'. The victimized characters are presented with humanity by the filmmaker and the violence is supposed to be a horrible thing. The suffering and violence isn't about humiliation and/or fun.

It’s actually ok to close your eyes and stop your ears for a few minutes when it gets too much. I wouldn’t recommend attempting to leave the theater while shaken up, it’s dark and disorienting, while the thing that’s upsetting you that much is now happening BEHIND you, which doesn’t help. ❤️ from someone who had such a moment. My friend told me when it was safe to open my eyes again.

The most on-the-money review of this franchise. You hit on the one reason I enjoyed the first over the second as I much preferred the bare bones first film over the much more commercialized second. Discovering Art in the dark, sparse environment of the first film was so chilling. Bowing to pressure to give Art more of a story took away from the wtf boogeyman feeling of the first film, much like over-explaining Michael Myers drained him of his creepiness. Not everything needs an explanation. What we don't know is scarier. Being a fan of Art as a character though I have enjoyed seeing him gain popularity.

I'm not really sure if we got an explanation for Art's origin lol. All the Art lore was more like bonkers nonsense. Which is a good direction to go I think. I guess it remains to be seen whether the lore goes anywhere, but I hope it stays pretty cryptic and delirious. I have to say that I also liked the first movie more. It actually felt scary. With Terrifier 2 I was more laughing at the absurd amounts of gore than anything else. But I think this might be a Evil Dead 2 case, where having the sequel be tonally more campy might be a good thing in the long run. I'm not really sure how Terrifier 2 could've kept the same tone as the first one without risking feeling like a retread. Just escalating the level of violence would've felt a bit cheap I think. It's going to be interesting seeing where the series goes. Damien Leone seems to have a good grasp of what's he's doing, so yah..

As someone who was absolutely petrified by horror movies as a child, the fact that I actively love this series, to the point where I have Terrifier 2 in a special edition steelbook Blu Ray, is shocking to me. But it's legitimately interesting and horrifying cinema, with Art being such a wildly entrancing character that he just pulls you in and makes you wonder what he could even do next to up the ante. It feels like All Hallow's Eve and Terrifier were almost like proof of concept films, both of which work very well in different ways, while Terrifier 2 really is what Leone wanted to do with more budget. That said, I didn't see it as undoing the subversion of the original Terrifier, but subverting audiences expectations again by being a surprisingly accessible film in terms of story, but absolutely revolting in terms of gore and nihilistic violence. And all the background nods to the original films makes it feel very much like Leone has a grand plan for this little dreadful universe of his. I'm eagerly anticipating the third, and I can't wait to see how it ties together while getting even crazier.

I personally see the 2 films as two different sets of homage. The first being much more akin to the grindhouse splatterfest video nasties of theate 70's early 80's; and the second being more like the more generic slightly higher budget slasher films of the mid 80's that would play with slightly higher concepts due to more welcoming audiences.

I enjoyed Terrifier 1 as it was just a slasher cat and mouse chase. The second one decided to… have a plot. And themes. The angels vs demons with costumes, the whole thing in the of the girl’s dad who either predicted Art’s reign of terror or could even BE her father… It just got so bogged down in trying to have an interesting plot that it ruined the pace of the film. A movie like this need not be two hours and eighteen minutes long! Def could’ve been streamlined. That being said, they’re certainly creatively entertaining. Also, an aside: extremely different looks between the two films. The first has HEAVY contrast, and the second had MINIMAL contrast. Like, there’s barely any deeply blacks in the sequel, while in the first half the screen might be an undefinable black.

The fact that the themes and story of Terrifier 2 are so cryptic honestly makes me like it a bit more. It could just be bad writing, but I do have hope that Leone has some deeper meaning and story in mind that he'll either reveal in the third film or keep hidden with subtle clues and thematic points that we have to decode and make sense of. My first exposure to Terrifier was from Dead Meat's The KILL COUNT, and just from that video (an obviously partly censored, toned down video commentating on the film) I couldn't even stomach the idea of checking the whole thing out myself. Then, when I watched the recent "Dead Meat Horror Awards 2023," they showed a death scene from Terrifier 2 (the bedroom kill, if you guys know what I mean), and that was even worse and made me audibly yell obscenities while occasionally looking away 😂

One thing I do like about 2 over 1 is that someone can actually face down Art. By that point it's been 3 movies with him as nigh unbeatable so I found it cathartic watching him actually lose. My favorite part about Terrifier is how Art's performance ends up being oddly comforting with his humorous presentation and mannerisms. For everyone else in Terrifier, it's a horror movie, but Art's here to make it a comedy, and his sick sense of humor comes through constantly.

Ever since I learned that Art the Clown had no idea he was supernatural before killing himself at the end of the first film, I've been a fan. He's a fascinating and uniquely terrifying slasher villain, and David Howard Thornton brings so much life to the character! His facial acting and physicality remind me a bit of a demented Jim Carrey, and I fucking love it. And I was so lucky to see Terrifier 2 on the big screen-it was one of the most incredible theater experiences I've ever had! These films are nasty and often mean-spirited, but it's such a breath of fresh air for me, as an avid fan of splatter flicks and the indie slashers of yore. Horror has experienced a kind of renaissance in recent years, and Art the Clown has most certainly contributed to that!

My main issue with Terrifier 2, apart from how its mean spiritedness doesn't vibe with me at all, is that it feels like a project where the editor wasn't allowed to cut anything out. Those two and a half hours consist of so much needless filler, and then it just kind of... decides to end. To me, this franchise has got so much of the body horror that I normally enjoy without any of the engaging plot to make it meaningful. Lovely practical effects, but to me they feel a bit wasted.

Fun fact: The opening music you use was also used for the Intro of the RPG Fear and Hunger and has basically come synonymous with it in the fandom. One of the villains in the sequel (Fear and Hunger 2) is heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the character of Art The Clown. Small world hey? I just watched Terrifier a few weeks ago and I think Art the Mime might be the creepiest, most effective antagonist in horror. The movie itself is lean and gory and absolutely fantastic. Terrifier surprised me, and I love discovering movies that do that. Great video Ryan! This video came out coincidentally a few days after I watched Terrifier 2 and I too compared it to Zombie’s Halloween 2 with how it deals with lore and backstory. I always noticed that he carries power and hand tools weighing roughly 50 Lbs in a garbage bag that he flings around effortlessly, and the bag never punctures. I understand there are gore hounds who live for the most violent and blood-drenched content possible, and I’m fine that there are films that target that audience-No one is forcing me to partake. But I think the credit for successful movies in that genre should be primarily focused on the special effects artists. The narrative, script, performances, and frankly, even the direction, seem secondary in their contribution to the film’s “quality” compared to the realism and extremity of the gore effects. I think there is a conversation to be had over whether gore-based horror constitutes cinematic “art” when up against more restrained presentations that use more subtle methods to engender unease and terror, but I am not prepared to engage in that debate. There seems room for both styles at the multiplex.

Oh you're absolutely right about the fact that more credit should go to the special effects artists, they're really amazing & I feel as if people don't give this branch of art the respect it deserves. Also, about the gore-centric films being or not being considered "art", I think it really depends on what your definition of "art" is. To me, it's just something that someone makes because they thought it up, whether it's "good" or "bad". That's why I consider stuff like product design, engineering, etc., to be art. So in my head, nearly everything is art, therefore gory flicks are art. The fact that I really like gore definitely helps, lol. But yeah, depends on what "art" is to you, and since it's different for everyone, I doubt we (as in, society in general) will ever conclude whether gore holds up as art next to more "artsy" films. IMO, it's a bit pretentious to sanction gore as lesser just cause it's bloody or not as nuanced (not saying that's what u said, just a general comment)

If I could recommend a video topic, whether itd be for a full video or a Dead Space style one, I’ve been playing this game called Immortality. Best way I can describe it is it’s basically a found footage game, where you uncover footage from an actor’s trilogy of films, trying to figure out the mystery of her disappearance as well as the fates of her co-stars. There’s also some sinister secrets hidden within the footage that can really send chills down your spine. I feel itd might be something you’d be interested in playing and talking about, especially with the unusual way the story is presented.
