The DVD has a feature where you can watch it picture-in-picture with a mock-up of the website and commentary by the in-universe producers, as if they’re watching it live. My vague memories of it are that it doesn’t add anything particularly new; it’s the only way I’ve seen the movie so seeing the first housemate’s profile go red was a hell of a gut punch that I’m sure wouldn’t have happened if it was a rewatch. However, I think there’s a recommendation that you watch the movie straight up first. I’m glad I disregarded it. Watch it for the vibes, I’d say.

The only movie where the DVD extras genuinely add to the experience of the film. One of them is the commentary track that has Bradley Cooper and another actor in character, acting the chatter between the people running the show (which fills in a few story blanks).

I'd love you to take a look at "The Woods" 2006 by Lucky McKee. It was a little sleeper horror film whose release was plagued by problems with the production studio. It's a Suspiria-like girls school movie with a fun plot and some great performances including B- movie king, Bruce Bleeding Campbell. I only stumbled on it recently and it stuck in my head longer than I thought it would. McKee also directed May, but I haven't seen it yet.

I very recently watched MAY on the Tubi movie channel, and it's definitely worth a viewing. So, like, go for it. I promise to track down THE WOODS on your recommendation. (There's another more recent non-horror picture bearing the same title, so it can get a bit confusing.)

I haven’t forgotten about this at all. The acting is a bit ropey, but it mostly holds up as a genuinely creepy and nasty little thing. I was working as a projectionist when it opened in cinemas and remember it doing pretty well, so it’s a bit of a shame to see it disappear into the ether. Hopefully Arrow Video will pick it up.

Weird. I was literally just listening to Peaches and it made be think about this film. I saw this in an arthouse cinema back in 2002, and you're absolutely right, cinema was a very different landscape back then. Found footage films were relatively unheard of, but it's the bleak ending that really was unconventional.

It is always weird for me when Power Rangers actors are in adult orientated things. It always distracts me. It makes sense that they would be in these film, they are generally C or B list actors and models, but it is always weird. Sean Cw Johnson, who plays Matt, plays Carter Greyson, the Red Lightspeed Ranger. Ya know, the most paragony of paragons (which is saying something in Power Rangers), who in this film is one of the twist killers.

Never thought I'd hear this movie mentioned again. Back in the early 2000s I was throwing myself into every obscure foreign movie/show I could as I'd just gotten my first region-free DVD player (this, The Dead Set, The I Inside, and The Hole with Thora Birch and Keira Knightley spring to mind if you leave out all of the Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Italian stuff) and even had a poster of this on my wall. In a strange way there are parallels here with the Japanese reality show, Susunu! Denpa Shōnen (a show that tortured its sole contestant, Nasubi for nearly a year), using everything from gaslighting, starving, etc all while on camera. Interesting analysis here and explaining why similar to The Last Broadcast which was actually older than Blair Witch, bad decisions and timing undid what momentum a great idea like this could've had. Hope to see you dig into more obscure indie stuff that was overlooked in light of more popular fare.

I was pretty disappointed in how the Fantasy Island movie turned out because the idea of a horror/thriller film with the setting of a reality TV show set on an island sounds like it could make for some creative stories. Still got my DVD copy of this, and I remember how fully they committed to the multi-cam Big Brother-esque premise by having a couple of scenes in the special features which you could watch while switching between different camera angles in real-time (including the Bradley Cooper / Jennifer Skye sex scene, naturally). A very bleak movie, and surprisingly ahead of its time.

This was one of the movies I rented from Lovefilm back in the day, which was ironically eventually bought out by Amazon Video in 2014. It was directed by Welsh director Marc Evans, it was also his first American movie after making two movies previously in his home town in South Wales and Northern Ireland. Sadly he went back to TV directing in recent years, after a string of movie flops. He made the award winning ITV drama series Manhunt fairly recently with Martin Clunes and he's also made other ITV shows, including one with John Simm.

The actors being “unknown” really isn’t true. Several actors in this film were far from unknown, even at the time the film period was shot in. The women especially worked a LOT, and were cast in much bigger films and tv shows than this, both before and after. They were already recognizable and still work today- you can see their very long list of credits on their IMDb pages.

I'll take this opportunity to recommend one of my favorite found footage films "Webcast". I have yet to have anyone I know actually watch it, so if you do, I'd be super happy! I'm not sure if it's the trailer that turns people off (please skip it) but it's quite unique and it plays on a couple of different genres. I watched it with virtually no knowledge as to what it was going to be about and I'd say that's the best way to go about it. It's from 2018 and it's British. It has some genuinely disturbing scenes and excellent character development: I mean I really cared for these people. There's nothing quite like it and if you're the type who enjoys an initial slow burn with a purpose, I'd recommend it. I don't want to spoil it so I'd suggest find it and go into it blind!

Ryan have you seen thr film kolobos from around this same era and with a very similar plot, would definitely be worth a video at some point, also series7- the contenders is another excellent found footage film from around this era

I HIGHLY recommend a film called “The Last Broadcast”. Basically, “Blair Witch” ripped it off entirely. It came out before “Blair Witch” and played some festivals but the filmmakers refused to digitize it, initially, which limited the festivals they could screen it at (because so few allow the screening of movies on film, apparently) and the filmmakers behind “Blair Witch” saw “The Last Broadcast” at a festival, barely reworked the concept behind it and filmed it digitally, allowing it to overshadow TLB. TLB isn’t the best film in the world but the twist is more interesting than “Blair Witch” (IMHO, anyway) and it’s extremely interesting to see all the little tricks they used to cobble the film together with such a tiny budget. I have never encountered anyone who even knows “The Last Broadcast” even exists and that gives me hella Mandela effect vibes, but I INOW I saw it and if you could manage to track it down, I think you would enjoy it!
