@agilagilsen87146 жыл бұрын
Sure it isn't ideal. But but considering the speed he's going at and the level of control he has I wouldn't berate him for it tbh. What is much worse in my opinion is the lack of a helmet. I get that helmets are shit to wear, but in teaching people, and particularly never riders of both snowboards and skis safety in the slopes, you can never have to much emphasis on how much safer you are with a helmet on. Even if you are good enough and ride safe enough that the need for a helmet isn't really there, things like other idiots crashing into you like in this video can happen. And if it does you would be happy that you had a helmet on.
@SuperemeRed6 жыл бұрын
John Edvards, you are completely correct but Ryan actually wears a helmet as of late. He's even made a video about it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWXFmHyorL-spdU&ab_channel=RyanKnapton

Had an incident similar to this when I first started. I was on a piste with a steep drop on my right hand side and I was taking my time doing very controlled and predictable toe and heel turns. A skier took it as a challenge to see if they could cut past me at speed on my right hand side . . . where the huge drop was. I noticed them coming but by that point it was too late, they were tucked in low determined to speed past me but got it spectacularly wrong, they clipped the frontside of my board and took us both down an icy, steep and rough drop at speed. So many skiers use you as obstacles it is ridiculous

I think this crash looked more dangerous for the skier than snowboarder. Of course this one is skier's fault. I just hope nothing serious happened to both of them. Stay safe and aware of your surroundings guys. Watch where you're going and always have in mind the worst possible way a person below you can do (suddenly stop / turn / crash) and maintain safe distance to avoid collision if they happen to do so.
@cromrke7 жыл бұрын
I just want to comment on some of the ridiculous nonsense about taking up the whole width! ...The downhill skier/snowboarder has the right to go anywhere he wants it's your responsibility to judge where he can possibly end up. If you need to slam to the ground to stop you are not judging the situation right, and you are of the same mentality as the skier in this video. If a situation arises where I can't judge if I can pass... I DON'T. Simple as that! And it makes things more interesting... I'm not repeating the same routine from the last descent.

cromrke You said complete bullshit. So the guy up is suposed to somehow know where the guy down will go?
@SiegePerilousEsauMaltomite6 жыл бұрын
Teodor Kuběna By having his eyes open, yes. The rider in the video was extremely predictable and consistent, just looking at him would tell you were to turn, but the skier that hit him was watching his buddy and following him instead of watching for others.

@WATERMOUFskylerdurden7 жыл бұрын
I have to say, the hatred for skiiers, and the collisions caused by skiiers, have to be caused by the position of their bodies in relation to the slope. They are stomach facing down hill and makes it very difficult to turn their head allll the way around to check where people are so they sort of start skiing with blinders. I've noticed this for over a decade at over 5 different resorts. Snowboarders are constantly moving, back facing down slope, stomach facing down slope, right shoulder facing down slope, left shoulder etc etc. This provides snowboarders with an easier time looking around and keeping their head on a swivel. So the next time you get into a crash with a skiier, go easy on them, they can't see shit.

Nevertheless I personally would NEVER ride with Headphones -> this way you give away one of your extra senses to be aware of your surrounding. Good Idea to shout to the other skiers "on your Left / Right" if they have headphones on like you in this Video all your shouting has no effect -> they just cant hear you...

If someone is riding over the knuckle of a moderate jump without doing the jump and suddenly cuts into the landing area and is hit by someone coming off the jump is that person at fault for being where he shouldn't be or the person doing the jump for not waiting for this person to clear off the jump entirely?
@killerkid25277 жыл бұрын
+terriblepickles Alright, thank you for the response. It was in a park and the guy that rode into the landing area turned out to be a fairly beginner skier. He couldn't hit any obstacles in the terrain park, but decided to go in there anyway and completely get in the way

A good rule that goes for both parties is to never make a sharp turn when possible. I fucking hate it when I'm trying to get to a race course carrying a huge backpack and a second set around the mountain and some idiot (this has happened to me with both a skier and a snowboarder before) makes the world's biggest cut across the hill after generally staying straight and crashes directly into me even when I slow down, sending both skis I have (the ones I'm carrying AND the ones I'm skiing on), as well as my backpack quite aways down the mountain.

+Dakota Ray helmets aren't part of the skier safety code. Staying in control and being able to avoid all downhill skiers / riders is. In this vid the snowboarder was hardly even moving! the only time you should have to look up hill is when your moving across the mountain.. other than that people looking down at you should be in control of their direction to avoid you. if you make the same predictable turns to control your speed then it should be easy enough for others to know where your going to go.
@SiegePerilousEsauMaltomite6 жыл бұрын
Second skier sucks, you can see them bombing straight down with only two or three riders snaking down, long slow turns... With any foresight at all he would have slightly turned right to avoid the rider
@zaccarlson88927 жыл бұрын
This is very true. I am an expert skier and love to go fast, but as soon as I get to the easier runs with lots of people, I check my speed because there are many beginners who have every right to go slow and take big turns. If you want to go fast, choose the right time and place to do so.

Sounds Eerily familiar to my passion. I love riding fast on my motorcycle. Cornering at speed with massive lean... I'm still learning, but with each limit raised, I tend to try and break that limit as quickly as possible. But that doesn't stop me from doing it safely. I choose my areas carefully. Back roads where there are banks of grass, no wired fences, minimal traffic, always on my side of the road. Safety comes first. If you want to be an idiot, do it on your own risk, not others.
@collinleeman52336 жыл бұрын

I slammed into a little girl last season she was laying around trying to detach her snowboard on the down side of a jump. I managed to crash in a way where I took most of the impact rather than her but I was so pissed. Moral of the story, stay clear of a jump after you hit it
@vakama90537 жыл бұрын
Ben Dover Yes, you should definitely get clear of a jump after you hit it, but it's on you to check the LZ to make sure there's not someone there before you hit the jump. If that girl had been incapacitated(unconscious, broken limbs, etc), you could have made a serious injury far worse by landing on her. That being said, good on you for taking the hit as best as you could, I know a lot of people who wouldn't have bothered.

this almost happened to me the other day. just casually cruising down a green run when two skiers come bombing down. One on the left one in the right. The one on the right came so close I had to cut my carve short and it startled me enough I almost fell. I know it's an annoyance sometimes, but it's your responsibility to watch out for the people below you and that does mean coming to a complete stop sometimes. I've had to do it myself. If you want to pass somebody going slower, slow down and give a friendly warning at least. You can complain about slower riders all you want, or people who make big carves, doesn't change the fact the YOU have to avoid them if they're downhill. If you think your Bode Miller, then get off the green and blue trails.

NoahMTSpensley Nice straw man argument. Whether I'm wearing skis or a snowboard is irrelevant. If those two skiers we wearing a snowboard is irrelevant. I've been cut off by people in both camps. What is relevant and what the point is here is that anyone below you on the mountain has the right of way and it's your responsibility to watch out for them and give them enough space. Read the sign at the beginning of the video. Just be smart, stay safe and show consideration for everyone in the mountain. Know the code

This is true, this year without any snow-related prior experience I started to learn snowboarding. I am into windsurfing. I have heard a lot of complaints about snowboarders before starting. Frankly my observation is totally different. Many skiers behave like idiots or criminals while overspeeding and passing you by from behind. It doesn't matter whether you learn or are a kid. They do not care. Each day (Austria) helicopter took someone injured by skier. I write exactly what I witnessed. In windsurfing we have community, in those mountains someone overspeeding on blues ... acts like and is a potential criminal.
@screew7084 жыл бұрын
I think we have a lot more skiers where I ride so if someone is doing something wrong it's probably going to be a skier just because there are so many more of them. One of the main issues with snowboarders and skiers on the same slope is that many skiers don't seems to realize that a snowboarder will almost always take a different path down the hill than a skier would, so they don't give you enough space because they can't anticipate your line. But there are also just way too many people going way to fast and it doesn't matter what they are on.
@samphaura3 жыл бұрын
skiers can’t see behind them so they will always be less safe when you are referring to skilled people. What i hate the most is when they cross the whole run out of NOWHERE and don’t even check behind them the slightest. keeping your line predictable is a must

but at the same time......the downhill skier should have a little clue about what's around him as well. If you're gonna go from the right side of the slope, to the left, and back again, YOU'RE THE FOOL, if you don't look up, to make sure it's clear. Just like when trails merge, you'll see the sign "TRAILS MERGE...........LOOK UP". Well, according to "the rule", you shouldn't have to look up............right??? WRONG!!! Yes, downhill has right of way.........but that doesn't mean "they can't do wrong". If you're gonna go across the trail, you're a fool if you don't give a quick look yourself.
@KaliAndy27 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you people should look up especially when doing wide or unpredictable turns. Problem is many doing wide turns are usually beginners who focus all their attention in front of them and don't have confidence to turn around to look back.
@ThisAllSoundsGood7 жыл бұрын
KaliAndy2 Exactly... there's a reason why KZbin videos show ski instructors fiercely defending their students who get hit from behind. They know that you can't teach a beginner to keep looking backwards every 3 seconds when they're just learning to stand on their feet and link turns. The responsibility belongs to the uphill rider who can see what's ahead to stay in control and slow down if necessary.
@grimmriffer7 жыл бұрын
Totally, utterly, inexcusable. Not as if the boarder was being even *remotely* unpredictable. Boarders and skiers all have their moments but skis make it so (too?) easy to just straight line it. :-(

They don't because no good skiers or snowboards follow them. If you were any good you would know that.

He actually made a video about this, saying that helmets gives people a feeling of invincibility and makes them reckless. That being said, he suggests people to wear helmets.

I just started riding a snowboard for the 1st time last season at 51. Just by instinct, I know to occasionally look around and see who/what is coming down the hill. Not looking is no different than going across all lanes on the freeway without ever looking behind you. It took just ONE season for me to realize how incredibly stupid some people are, both on skis and boards. If you want to bomb down a hill, do it on Monday, not a Saturday when the slopes are full of people! This season, I'll take days off and go when others are at work and/or school.

Well if you ARE looking behind you to avoid a collision, then I guess what I said is not so ridiculous, huh? And who said anything about a mirror?

A friend of mine almost had this happen last week, we just came out a fun park. And some old guy going 60-70 km/h decided to go right past a group of 20-30 standing still. Luckily he just saw him at the last second and only brushed his leg. Both could have broken a ton of bones.

Only one way to never get hit from behind and that's go faster than everyone else.
@Jackman-yl1ke6 жыл бұрын
I may like to go fast, but you can't just go extremely fast and go close to people. The downhill skier needs to look forwards to see his obstacles. The downhill skier shouldn't have to look up to avoid people. The uphill skier should be aware that the downhill skier can't always check behind him and that the uphill skier needs to dodge the downhill skier. Sorry if this sounds confusing. :)

Ryan--You are my favorite You-tuber! (Is that a word). I wish more people would see you as the epitome of a snowboarder instead of the wild out of control "rebels/asshats" they think of when snowboarding is mentioned. Keep fighting the good fight! And keep inspiring!!

We were carving in Italy with a hard board... and friend of mine was hit by a skier coming from behind superfast , crushed the center of board and falling on top of him...he broken two tibias and 6 toes ( the tibais turn into hardboots ) very bad day.

The Gaf Project if it's so annoying than sit down and wait a couple minutes, or until they are out of sight, then continue riding. Just like you may want to ride fast, others may want to ride slow.

The Gaf Project I see many many many more skiers "carving" then boarders. Most boarders I know are flying down runs and carving only on the turns.

Thanks Ryan, great vid,,, wish this was all common sense / courtesy,,, I bomb mad fast but hardly ever were I'll hit someone passing if either of us caught an edge, and "ON YOUR RIGHT/LEFT" has always worked very well (it's not hard, don't be shy),,, also I like to practice huge narly carve and practice my ability to sudden stop, or jut across the trail from one side hit to another but never without checking uphill first. haven't had a bad collision in near 20 years riding cause I do these things,,, it's really so simple... Have fun, ride respectfully... Thanks again...

I have to disagree with the suggestion that a skier/rider has a duty to look uphill while skiing/riding. Promoting this idea will just encourage/absolve the overtaking skier/rider. From a standing stop I fully agree that a skier/rider has a clear duty to look uphill before starting out.....but after that the onus to avoid a collision is SOLELY on the overtaking skier/rider. Period.

I think a lot of people are forgetting about the skier/snowboarder code while up on the slopes. My son and I are both skiers and we both have had numerous near collisions with other skiers and even a guy on a ski bike, never snowboarders by the way, who skiing way to fast and passing us. One guy brushed by and skied over my kids ski and told my kid to “F” off. I have always taught my kid the rules of conduct while up on the slopes, I expect him to abide by them and will yank his pass if I ever see him breaking them and ski recklessly. He does abide by them and I wish others would to.
@moomooland196 жыл бұрын
Personally I say this dosn’t apply for the terrain park. If you can’t ski/snowboard without having ninja skills, you don’t belong in the park. And for the sweet love of your mother don’t side jump in front of somebody.

So every single snowboard/ski etiquette guideline, including that from the National Ski Area Association, gives "right of way" to the downhill person. There seems too be a lot of people who don't understand the meaning of "right of way", so here's the definition: "the legal right of a pedestrian, vehicle, or ship to proceed with precedence over others in a particular situation or place." - oxforddictionaries.com
@DavidBridgeTechnology7 жыл бұрын
Totally agree that you need to check up hill too. Would not want it to be a requirement but think it is plain common sense. That said the issue here is not speed, traversing, not looking, etc. Its all of them. Speed differential is the biggest issue. That said if the skier at 3:20 took a sudden left turn at 3:20 then you would have ploughed him down just the same. Good job for calling out though: I do that too. (and don't wear headphones). The slopes are dangerous. Shit happens. When on a busy piste or near kids I always think : Ride like you're on a motorbike in a city and its all good.

This is a good video I hope everyone who skis/boards sees it and soon. So many people get confused by the phrase "the downhill skier has the right of way" from of old, but that phrase was coined before boarding was a thing. It's not the "downhill skier" it's the "person who is downhill". Basically you don't hit people from behind and if you do it is your fault pretty much no matter what they were doing. We all have to look where we are going so you don't look back up the hill very often. The exception is when entering a trail where you have to look uphill to make sure it is safe to enter the trail. It's pretty much the same as the rules that apply to traffic. When reading something like the Colorado Skiers Safety Code it is helpful to remember it was written before boarding was a thing and just replace "skier" with "skier, boarder, or other mountain user" in your mind. Or just "person". The intent was never to separate mountain users into separate groups based on what equipment they are using, so skiers in these older documents include boarders and all other equipment. And really what's the difference between a snow board and a pair of skies anyway? It's really not much, just that there is only one board and it's as wide as 2 skies. There is no difference in treatment in law or hill policy based on what you are riding, only your behavior. For example, the sign at the top of the lift that says clear the area is not just to remind snowboarders to move out of the way before they buckle in. It's a bad place for skiers to stop and adjust their boots or gloves as well.

Lesson two... never stop on the blind side of a hill or knoll. I wiped out at Monarch last season when a family of 6 stopped right below the crest of a small hill where I couldn't see them on a technical Blue. I literally had to heel edge and whip my board into a downhill tumble to avoid hitting a young kid. I walked away, but I was a little cranky after that.

Do they have "skateparks" for snowboarding and skiing or is it only on the mountains that you have to share with everyone? Because if so, then I can understand with the skier and I don't even like skiing, I like snowboarding more but skateboarding is my actual sport. Because I'll skate as fast as I want if I don't have a park that I can go to that will let me do it. If there's only the mountains to go to and I'm a local who is good at skiing, fuck the tourists or anyone who wants to zig zag across the slope going 8 mph
@gregharris19667 жыл бұрын
Think before you act. Using a ski run is a privilege not a right. It's like driving a car , everyone can , but not everyone should. You might be the unlucky one who ends up in the blood bucket next time , broken , finished for the season or worse.
@BadgerStyler7 жыл бұрын
It's ironic - every serious injury I've ever seen a boarder get (with the exception of freestyle-related injuries) has been on a blue or green run, and it's always because of people either going faster than they're able to or crashing into someone else. People much more careful on harder runs, I suppose.

its just that you have to take care of EACH OTHER regardless if youre a boarder or a skier. when the slope is broad you can Do your swings widely but if its not and you are slow let some space to the others

In France slopes are very narrow and overcrowded, too many beginners on steep and technical slopes (on equivalent of your double black diamond), there are not many slopes that skiers can have a lot of speed

I dont mind skiers passing me fast once i make a new dead edje expeshaly on steeps or just slight grades but when you are hitting shutes expeshaly for a beginner taking their time and using the whole area dont go shooting past expeshaly when they are constantly looking down the hill for their next switch and looking for anyone that might have passed them when they went on their next edje. Once went down half way in a chute on a beginner trail (the end of the trail before a flat to get back to the lift) hit my toe edje again and some skier that decided it was a great idea to bomb straight past my front causing me to trip up because i sure as hell didnt want to slide down 20 yrds of ice on my ass and back along with any injuries that could have happened, just pay attention and if you are unsure just slow down and follow them till you know you can pass
@5t3v3nM Жыл бұрын
damn yeah. honestly I can't stand when skiers go bombing down the beginner trails. when everyone should know most of the riders are new riders or people trying to learn new stuff. but also the boarder is taking up the whole trail by going from one side to the other. the trails are big and no one idc how new you are. you dont need the whole run to yourself when there's hundreds of other riders. be considerate.
