In this video I get in-depth on the Monophonic Orchestral Texture.

This texture comes from George Frederick McKay's book Creative Orchestration. This is where the instruments of the orchestra are focused on solos, unisons, and octaves.
You can get a surprising amount of contrast, richness, and even power from an arrangement this simple. In the video I go over what the texture is, use the opening from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade as an example, and then write my own orchestration of the theme from Breath of the Wild using only the Monophonic Texture.

Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade is my favorite piece of music, and first captivated me because of that grand powerful opening. Never occurred to me it was monophonic. Solid argument in favor of monophonic.

Great video! The practice of controlling dynamics by using more or less instruments is called "Terraced dynamics". It was used heavily in the baroque period when the instruments of the time did not have great dynamic ranges like they do now.

Wow - that was super insightful! Just listening to the orchestrated piece I would never have guessed it was nothing but unisons! I will definitely be putting this in my toolbox.

This was so useful to see you orchestrate the whole piece live! It's one thing to show the finished product, but another to actually see every step along the way.

I realtid love your work here on youtube. I have been so inspired to take up arranging music again. A minor comment on Sheherezade. The low trombone is really a tuba part. 1st/2nd in pair on same staff and bass trombone/tuba the staff below.

3:14 Scheherazade has 3 trombones and a tuba, so there's two tenors on the upper octave in alto clef, a bass trombone doubling the lower octave and tuba an octave below that

This is amazing! Thank you for sharing. What you can get from one melody across multiple voices is really exciting. Looking forward to watching the rest. Have you heard of Jon Brantingham? The latest thing I learned about composing was from him. I talks about William Caplin's Analyzing Classical form too. I think form is probably the greatest tool for composers. It's a way of organizing, expanding, exploring, developing ideas and creating ideas. It's the grammar use to make sense of musical ideas. I'm very much interested in that Orchestral Textures book you mentions. To take advantage of musical textures as well as develop an idea with classical form. Those two disciplines can create GREAT music. I'm grateful for this channel!

As an amateur composer I've been watching your stuff to learn and write my own work, and i must say they have been absolutely fantastic in understanding things better. For this, i know you mentioned the sporadic change in textures was exaggerated a bit but actually i hink if you halved the tempo to make it adagio or even lento, this would work really well as it stands. But nonetheless the orchestration advice is hugely helpful to me and i wanted to say thanks.

Hi! Great videos Ryan ! . Just yesterday I Came to meet your channel and im deep diving into every video which come across . Im considering upgreading to the pro version of Dorico to be able to analize important scores . I ve this querry , to the composers in general . Where do you get the scores to be in the softwear ? You introduce them by hand ? Or is there a place where you can get them in dorico/ sibelius / finale format ?
