This instantly reminded me of a stoy that Buck tells. Apparently someone was having trouble loading at one of his events. They told him nothing that carrots cant help with. Well Buck went home and the next day was told the person had to walk the horse home. They didn't believe the horse could be loaded... so imagine the suprise when he was put in backwards. 🤠

A wise old cowboy once told me that a horse that won't load isn't truly halter broke. If they were they'd follow the handler anywhere. That cowboy was my granddaddy and I miss him.

Yes many horses dont get mutch of groundwork! I think the worst horses to load are just the stubborn once that are juste to be manhandled. There mindset is just hit me all you want i am not going in. There also learned to walk to the side of the trailer and thats when people takes to rope. I am not an expert on this but ive learnd my horse to enter the trailor from the left so he has to step up and turn, I also done this from the right and straight forward. What my horse would not want to do is to enter if I am right in front of him or "face" him, I can walk in with him or stand in there but my body doesnt stand "facing" him or i can stand outside and give him space to walk in. Many people who "face" the horses doesnt realise there blocking the way for the horse, many horses who doesnt want to go in there stalls wont go in because there is someone blocking theyre way and they dont want to run over you. My horse does the same, he can follow you or you can send him in but he want go if your "blocking" the way. It goes for the stall, trailor and the paddock-gate as well.

I had this happen once with a horse that usually loaded easily. This time he put 1 foot in and backed up and refused to even try. It wasn't like him at all to refuse, but after several attempts he finally reared up and slammed his front feet into the trailer and the trailer literally popped off the ball. My friend had hooked it up that night with many years of experience, but I assume he felt a difference when he first put his foot in at the beginning. My farrier told me a similar story of another of his customers had where the horse started to load and then refused. They ended up getting him in, but later found out that there was a board rotting out under their rubber mats. I think as the years go by we can sometimes take things for granted or maybe even cut a few corners in making sure we are loading our horses into a thoroughly checked out and safe trailer. They're heavy enough to feel a potential problem when we can't. If a horse who usually loads fine suddenly won't it might be a good idea to check some things to prevent a horrible accident! If someone other than yourself hooks up the trailer, it never hurts to double check it before loading your horse into it.

@@amberpaulucci4256 No need to be rude. That wasn’t “whipping” by any stretch, he upped the pressure to get the horse out of its mindset. They spent over two hours trying to load the horse before Ryan got there. The horse wasn’t new to the trailer, just unwilling. How much time do you expect them to yield to it? If you’ve ever observed a herd of horses, you would know they are much rougher with each other than anything you see from Ryan Rose.🤦🏻‍♀️

Also remember the ride you give them in the trailer.. makes a difference. If the trailer driver goes easy on the corners and accelerates and stops slowly .. horses tend to be happier to jump back in.

I have helped many people with loading. Majority of the time the horse say "I’m not going in there." This means firm handling especially with experienced travellers. At a show I helped a woman load two ponies, she had been trying for over two hours and refusing help. It didn’t take long. This became a regular occurrence at shows. One time she called out asking for help. Her daughters were just holding the ponies letting them graze. I called out I’d be over in a bit. Ponies lifted their heads and walked straight in.

LOL. reminds me of a time we had with some horses. Trailer had been at the trailhead for 8 days while we had a group of fishermen out. We got back and 4 of the 7 horses would NOT load up. took us a while to figure it out but while we were gone a family of racoons had moved into the trailer and likely the whole thing smelled of some alien horse eating creatures from the Planet Zorgon. We didn't have time to monkey around so we swept all the racoon poop out. covered the floor in hay and sprinkled it liberally with sweet feed. We ahd a Jenny in the string we usually loaded last but she was sort of the remuda's "field supervisor" so we decided to load her up front. Once she went in the rest didn't give us too much guff about it

I hope they shut the windows before leaving. I had a horse try to get out of the trailer through an open window once. I really think he would get claustrophobic. With another horse in there he was perfect. Without another horse, anything could happen. He was like this for about 15 of the 25 years I owned him. You just never knew. The trailer was plenty big enough for him as well.

This was very helpful. I do just wonder if sometimes horses have a sense of something, but ? Years ago, I learned of an horrific instance in which people I vaguely knew were hauling horses and the floor of their trailer collapsed on the highway, but they did not know until other drivers caused them to pull over. What those poor horses endured was unimaginable. Please always double and triple check trailer flooring is intact and can handle the anticipated load and beyond. This does not apply to the specific video here, just imho it is worth double checking the required containment is safe.

That was awesome because it seems like you taught him that it was nicer to be in the trailer than it was to be outside getting pressure put on him and what you call being big lol but it worked and you taught him that he's not allowed to put on the brakes whenever he wants whereas they were teaching him exactly that that he was allowed. That was very enjoyable because I've seen people try and load horses for hours like that and it's just inconceivable to me it's that definition of insanity whereas you try and do the same thing over and over expecting a different result whereas you come in and get in the horse's head and completely take that out, what they taught him or actually let him get away with. Your method, which is so awesome, taught him exactly what he is and isn't allowed to do that was really cool thanks again for the lesson

I am no where near the horseperson Ryan Rose is, but a few years back my very dear friend had trailed to the local state park to ride. When she was ready to go home the horse refused to load. She called me at 9 PM after 2 or 3 hours of failed efforts to load the mare. She was considering walking the horse home 10 miles in the dark because she would not load. I basically used the same technique, tapping the horse when it pulled back or refused to move and stopping pressure when she approached, smelled, or looked at the trailer. It took a while, but she finally went on.

I call what you've had to do "re-programming" the horse's mind - and possibly the owner's mind, too. I worked with rescues for several years, peeling the onion to figure out what's going on inside their sweet heads. Sometimes, reprogramming the owner is harder 😑, which needs to happen for the sake of the horse. Well done!

Been there & it’s not fun. Was out with a group of friends and we all went back to our trucks for a break & bite to eat. I & my spouse had to leave & they all went back out. His horse loaded fine, mine decided to say no. 2+ hours later everyone came back in off the trails & we were still trying to load him. I did all the make it easy by the trailer, hard away and he wasn’t having it. I know I wasn’t experienced enough but most of my friends were. Still no luck. Unfortunately none of the riding buddies who were trainers were there that day. I was very close to calling a vet to have my horse sedated. IDK, maybe that would have been better. We ended up putting a rope around his butt & thru the front windows and "coaxed" him in. I did work with him & with his trainer after that. We never went thru that again but he’d still have his stubborn days. Stubbornness was just in his nature. Otherwise, a good horse, confident on the trail.

I also went hunting with him and he provided meat for our table and when I deserved it he beat my ass. Did you consider that it's dark out therefore the trailer probably looks different to him? And, that's why he had an issue with it. As he stood at the trailer with his head down and snorted is a good indication of that

And tomorrow or the next day, set up the trailer and practice loading correctly and calmly. Just to reinforce this "lesson".

I was talking to some friends at the stables and we came to the same conclusion that its not always easy (I'm a feministe but I could admit adding "for women" here) to deconnect emotionnaly from your own horse. I can get firmer if need be with someone else's horse but its harder with my own. I'm making an effort since I realised that I wasn't firm enough with my own horse.

Your no English major either 😂 It correctly would be; Disconnect emotionally...deconnect isn't a word, emotionally is two L's not 2 N's😂

I need your refreshers as much as my horses need them. I have to move mine to a new ranch and I think that is part of my problem, necessity. They have been in this 3 times trailer before, 4 horse slant. Plus having three to move and them being buddy sourer I'm struggling. I have sessions every day but not necessarily each horse. I think today I'm going to let the other two out while I work with the third horse. When they get too close I'll make it uncomfortable for them to be there. They can watch but not too close, I guess. Guessing here. I'll attach the string to the stick to have plenty of reach for the other two.

I love how honest you are. “ he said no” wrong answer 😂😂😂 I really really enjoy your videos. I still recommend my students to watch your videos. I think to learn what works for you see how others do it and try things out.

Enjoyed watching. Initially, I thought there might a wasp(wasps) in there since that happened to me once upon a time!

In my area a trailer should definitely be examined closely before each use. Any hollow area is subject to harboring a wasp nest. Nasty little buggers.

could be related to the darkness of the area around the trailer since it's nighttime. makes a new scenario so you have a new horse to train for it =)

Hello! Can you do a video on how to make your horse sit still like on the trailer, while mounting, dismounting, halter/showmanship, and just in general. Thank you!!!

I feel like the girls were like “it’s midnight. Don’t need a lecture. Get him in the trailer” 😂 Good job, Ryan. This would get so frustrating.
