One of the things I love most about Rye and his videos is that you can see that people playing dead games are almost waiting for him to cover their game, once he comes around there are events and mods and admins get involved but he doesn't turn into a celebrity, they receive him with open arms just like they would any newcomer and do their thing, never putting him in a pedestal and teaching him about their legacy. Those weirdly expensive games are priced that way for scams regarding 'random key boxes' on scummy key-reselling sites. (Those that promise 'at least one 60$ game!'.) A few days ago some devs even re-priced and re-named their games to fool people into thinking they're purchasing Helldivers 2, BG3 or Counter Strike. Because apparently you can not just re-name your game once released but also the name of the publisher and dev studio, which is insane...)

About TheLargestDog: I remember being in a Murder Miners server a few years ago, hosted by The Largest Dog himself. It was an FFA on one of his maps, and he was AFK for the entire match. there was a few players who were killing him and teabagging him, and it didn't sit right with me. I have a lot of experience playing some of the older Halo games, and my skill in those transferred seamlessly to Murder Miners. I spent the match fighting off 3 or so newbies while protecting the AFK Largest Dog. Didn't understand his significance until I looked more into the game's community. There was this one World War 2 RTS I played on a CD as a kid and mostly forgot about. I remember it being quite fun, yet difficult, and quit playing after a while, probably because I couldn't beat a mission or something. Eventually ended up losing the CD too somewhere along the way, and the PC it was installed on. However, it lived rent free in my head for all those years. I never forgot about playing the game, nor what it looked like, just all the details such as the name, franchise, and developer. It was always "That One WW2 RTS I Played as a Kid but Don't Remember." I never attempted to seek out the game, since there's a mountain of WW2 strategy games to climb through and I assumed it would be forgotten shovelware. It was Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. I have never known the title of this game yet always remembered it this whole time. I immediately recognized it when the footage popped up, even though you played a different game in the series. Thank you, Rye, for finally solving the mystery of this game after so long. I'm definitely going to play it again now.

Nothing will ever be as memorable as the zombies and big team battle matches on MM. Building an impromptu base or brrowing into the map to hide will never be replicated anywhere the same way, and no Fortnite allowing for a tower to be dropped at your feet doesn't count.

Tower unite's a very interesting case of what happens when you can't get an influx of new players to funnel into the less popular modes. It was originally a pair of the most popular Gmod servers, Gmod Tower, that was basically an MMO mario party, and being attached to that far, far more popular game meant that you'd get a whole lotta both new and occasional players joining constantly, to play with the regulars and keep the mini games alive. They eventually wanted to move it off of Gmod because of the source engine's limitations and having their own identity, but... They didn't really change the structure of the game at all. And that became a problem when it had a 20$ price tag. Suddenly, you arn't getting new players and occasional players anymore. So there were barely any players to play the minigames, which kinda killed them, which was half the appeal of the game (again, MMO mario party), so it kinda lead to a death spiral for the game based on its ill-fitting design. The creative/social aspects of the game were largely free from this curse, but the loss of half the game was still enough to drive many off, leaving only the most hardcore left around. Its definitely sad to see what was once a hub for genuinely millions of players, where servers had ques to get in and you could literally see anything or meet anyone, decay into this, but... its not like its over. I don't know what's going through the dev's minds, but they know these issues. They know the game's failing to capture the audience they *know* is there. And they've been cooking something for a while. Hopefully they can solve the issues plauging the game, cause... It was fun whike it lasted.

Wasn't expecting to see Combat Mission on the list, actually I wasn't expecting to see Combat Mission really anywhere outside of those who know it and some RTS circles. For some more context on it to those curious, Combat Mission is actually a military simulator and a different version (Combat Mission Pro) is actually employed by militaries. Think of it as kind of the Arma of RTS/Turn-Based games with it being the most realistic game for the genres as well as incredibly difficult because of that, the Dark Souls of RTS essentially. Unlike other games where you can just send units in you can't really do that in Combat Mission where if you don't employ real life tactics you're gonna lose and lose pretty bad (just like Rye did, and it would've been worse if the enemy had just mortars with how grouped up and exposed his infantry was). There's a few games with 4 being WW2, 2 being modern and 2 cold war (+3 older games from the earlier 2000s which are pretty different and another one set in the Soviet-Afghan War). The most interesting thing about the games though are how the modern ones have predicted 2 conflicts now (well 3). Shock Force (the OG one) came out like ~3 years before the Civil War in Syria and while Black Sea was set in a hypothetical invasion of Ukraine in 2017, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea while it was in development (which it had been since 2009). Then right before Russian troops started mobilising on the border in 2022, they announced their DLC for Black Sea... (though while it is finished or pretty finished, it's currently been delayed till the war's over) I wouldn't really recommend it though to those who aren't into MILSIM or wanting a challenging RTS but on their website (battlefront.com) there are demos for each game. They're also still being developed with a new engine coming soon hopefully as well as DLC and possibly a new game too.

I played hell out of the original Beyond Overlord and Barbarossa to Berlin back in the day. I was broke teenager back then so I pirated 'em. Bit later actually I bought the anthology release containing first two games and Afrika Korps. Only to find out that assholes shipped German version with no swastikas, Waffen SS troops re-branded into something like waffen ZZ or waffen grenadiers, historical names of people involved, dates and locations purged from mission briefings to countries that doesn't hate actual education or fun. Replacing textures, briefing texts and other stuff would have been a massive hassle without scripts or something to automate whole process. Never went back to the series after that. Ever since I have held opinion that German versions of any WWII games should be made fundamentally incompatible with rest of the world as long as the country as whole hates education.

This series is the personification of the word "wholesome". While the rest of YT freaks out about P2W models, 120$ AAAA games and pointing out graphical glitches in out of bounds areas, this series really takes us to the core of gaming. To a time of saving up gifts from Grandma to buy a new physical game copy, planning for hours at school with friends about what to do in game later, spending 100s of hours on a 5$ purchase and just having a fun time. A time before things got complicated, our friends fell apart or passed away, a time before gaming became a multi billion dollar industry with all the glitz and glam of a fashion week and no heart. I still stay in some of those old discord groups where I met people during the early monster hunter games. We've been through each other's weddings and divorces, talking someone out of taking their own lives and even though we don't play any games together anymore, it takes me back to a time where it all began. :')

I think you should play Dino D-day. I used to play it and since I’m a grown-ass man I rarely play video games (but never grew out of living dinosaurs) but I was kind of shocked to see that one day that game had no players at all on multiplayer except for one player I have as a friend. Every time I do get to hop on Steam I see him still playing Dino D-day by himself.

The thing about Steam and PC's in general is that you'll have a lot of people using old and low powered machines and/or without a lot of money. So some of these older/free/lower spec games tend to keep a player base much longer as it gives those people more games to choose from

Just found out after showing him this video, my math tutor was the best altitude player of all time and how he won 5 world champions under some name that started with an S that I can’t remember but he was saying how he was number 1 on both leaderboards for years and he even knew I few of the guys from the video that he used to play with back in the day. He told me all this… an hour after I had coincidentally watched this video and found out what altitude even was, not to mention he brought up the game him self by complete chance.

I fear this may become the legacy of Helldivers. Not Helldivers 2, but the original twin stick shooter released on PS3 & carried over on PS4. It's successor absolutely over shadows the original, but after watching videos of Rye. I'm reminded there's likely always going to be a nostalgic crowd.

I came here to see interesting dead lobbies, not tearing up about my time spent playing murder miners. I had a solid 2 years with that being my most played game, even over actual Halo The Largest Dog was a real MVP. I didn't spend a ton of time in his levels simply because they were so expansive that you would spend minutes looking for another player, even in a full lobby- but he always, and I mean ALWAYS had a lobby going. Pretty sure he'd leave his 360 running while he was asleep and afk it the whole time. It was hard not to be a little jealous of the name he'd made for himself in the community, but it also wasn't unearned. Dude had the single largest impact on the game out of any active or inactive player. I was extremely sad to see he had passed away and wished I had known beforehand. I think a lot of us wished we had known because we can attribute a lot of our most positive murder miners memories to his efforts to bring life and creativity to the game If I could have just one single day to go back to those times

I love Tower Unite- I have always been a big arcade person since I was a kid, and it has really scratched that itch for me in a lot of ways. However, it does make me sad to see how largely ignored it has been for so long, and to know that there has been such a ground up effort for this game. I hope one day we see a stable, feature rich final release version of the game and all the developers of the game can truly feel fulfilled with their work.

had to come back i think youre completely right without battlefield in the title it wouldve been a winner cause everything thinks of war or wide open battles with that name, in actuality they made a pretty damn good tdm, cops and robbers, and like capture the flag type game. like i bet if it was just hardline youd be right and wouldve had a bunch of people still there. its sad cause to me at least the cops and robbers was super fun but you cant really play it without full teams and comms so itll never come back😢

There is something of a safe place in a game that has brought you so much joy, even if you are the only one playing it. You gained a subscriber, Maybe one day you will make a video about a game I made that had an impact on people. keep grinding!
