K& N Filters: The best upgrade for your Can Am Ryker air intakes

I clean mine every oil change 5000 miles to be safe. With dirt roads and Florida humidity in the air, everything sticks to the filter. For the last 25 years, I have been using K&N filters in my cars, trucks, and bikes. They work so well! - Hope to see you on the roads someday.

I've always used K&N filters in my vehicles. A couple issues I have seen with some people...they do not clean them often enough and they over oil them which will also cause issues.

Great video Beth... I clean my k&n air filter on all of my vehicles including the Can-Am ryker anytime I would normally change out an air filter according to the maintenance scheduling for that vehicles air filter replacement..

Can you look in the filter tunnel with a flashlight and see if the filter is dirty without taking the housing off? Wish there was a screen at the front of the housing to catch leaves and larger objects. In Florida we are getting love bugs now and would be nice to have a love bug screen at the entrance to the housing like on some cars and trucks in Florida. Great video as always.

Yes love bugs can be a real problem here in FL! I'd be afraid to put a small mesh over the air intake to catch them (fear that it would also limit the air flow as well). I don't think you can see into the filter with a flashlight underneath....I am just going to commit to cleaning them once a year, it it needs it or not! Thanks for the great comments John!!

Hi Beth, I’m a motor mechanic and in my opinion and the opinion of many others is that K and N air filters are less efficient at removing small damaging particles from the incoming air, this is perhaps the reason Kand N recommend cleaning only every 50000 miles, the stock air filter is much more efficient at removing the damaging smaller particles prior to them entering the engine and the hassle involved in cleaning and re-oiling the K and N (with the correct oil) makes them definitely not Worth all the mucking around and cost compared to occasionally blow cleaning or replacing the stock filter, many dyno tests on cars and bikes have also proved no power increase with these inferior filters compared to a clean stock filter, Above all I choose to care for my engine and will continue to use the stock filter, there are also other clips on utube claiming that K&N filters can destroy your engine. If these filters were any better and offered improved power or mileage as claimed why didnt the manufacturer Can Am fit a similar filter to the K&N as OE ?

Hi Carl, Although I disagree with your opinion (based on my own research), I certainly value your opinon. I certainly respect yours, especially that you are a motor mechanic. I sometimes believe that there may be user error when it comes to re-oiling the K&N filters. People have a tendency to over oil and yes it will then drip etc. But if done properly, it can be a great filter. As far as why can am didn't use something similar as and OE, my answer is also a question(s): Why is the bike mostly cheap plastic? Why is the horn so wimpy? Why aren't the headlights LED? Why isn't their cruise control or a radio? etc. It's all about saving money and making the bike more affordable. Again, thank you for your comment and I hope other will read it and it will help them make an informed decision.

@@RykerRydes Hi Beth, I agree that there were a lot of corners cut with the Ryker, too much cheap plastic, squeaky horn, led lights etc, I don’t like the distraction of a radio on a bike nor have I ever used cruise control on a bike, But all in in all there good value considering the fairly robust engine, transmission, suspension, frame and brakes etc All of my colleagues...mechanics agree though that K&N air filters and there claimed advantages, more power, economy etc are a Myth that holds no merit, probably created by those who produce these filters and stand to gain by promoting there products and lodging false reviews, the question is...why don’t any car or bike makers, including high end stuff like Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW etc etc use these type of filters as original equipment if they are such a simple solution to more power and economy when these same company’s go to extreme lengths to extract every ounce of power from there engines and continue to use paper filters or a dense fibrous filter element...not K&N type filers, K&N filters should stay on the race track where they belong and where their engines have a reasonably short life span between rebuilds anyway....your thoughts? I own a 360 Ferrari and a 308 and a K&N filter will never, ever make it’s way onto either, let alone my Ryker or Subaru Anyway, love most of your vids..keep up the good work.

If you change your air filter to K&N and change your engine oil To Amsoil you will see a performance gain.

using a high performance air filtering system air for the cvt side of the engine is overkill right? the purpose is to filter the are as it passes thru the cvt to help air cool it. cost wise does it save you money in the long run? most likely.

You are right, the CVT side does not need it a fancy filter, but I like symmetry and why not have both the same? The air filter keeps the belt clean. I like the idea of never having to buy another air filter again.

Hi Beth Did you notice a MPG increase after installing the K&N air filter, if so on average how much of an improvement for normal riding?

Honestly, any increase in MPG is pretty insignificant. To increase your MPG, stay off the highway and just ride it very gently. I ride it like I stiole it, so my MPG is not great. But I got the Ryker for fun, not to save money on gas, if that makes sense. Enjoy the ride!

Original parts are the best parts, unless the manufacturer "Can-Am" offers an "upgrade" themselves. Why? The manufacturer "Can-Am" invested a lot of money in the development of the vehicle so that you can drive the vehicle anywhere in the world without getting any problems with the vehicle. No air filter manufacturer has that much money in development. If this K&N air filter was really that good, it could have been installed at the Can-Am factory. Personally, I would only install "K&N" if you can no longer get original spare parts from the vehicle due to its age. That's my personal opinion.
