About Me:
Hello, my name is Dan Shannon. I grew up in a small town in New Brunswick, Canada. At a young age, I started working with tools. One of my favourite projects was using a scroll saw to make an old fashioned sleigh ornament in grade 8. As an adult I dove back into my love for woodworking. I’m married with two precious little girls, and I do my own renovations on the house. Also, I like to build my daughters and my wife useful keepsakes out of wood in the shop. I started this KZbin channel in March of 2023 because I wanted to share the knowledge I had over the years working with tools, as well as sharing the quality of rigid pro grade tools and their service agreement. I’m not a professional by any stretch and I don’t claim to be. I would just like to help those who want to start a shop like I did. I've had a stick shoot up at me too on my yardwork splitter, no injuries thankfully. There is a lot of pressure on the log sometimes they swing out and hit your leg or shoot forward when the pressure releases. I use a 4x4 as a push stick it shortens the travel distance of the push plate and saves energy. Also if it slips it will redirect the energy up instead of at you. Lucky it didn't take your eye out!

Yeah that two hand operation, especially where you have to be bent over so close to that log is not a good idea in my estimation. You really need to hold the log until it is engaged in the splitting mode.

A suggestion, the leading edge of the splitting wedge, if honed a bit finer than factory makes it easier for the penetration of log. This allows the pump to be more efficient & less heat generated in the electric motor. If splitting knotted logs, working from an edge in, rather than middle often helps. You learn to " read " the log, as to how best to place on the machine. If machine is going to be used in cold , freezing weather, other makers recommend using ATF fluid or lower viscosity hydraulic oil. This improves speed of operation.

Yeah it was crazy!!! It’s true with tools 🛠️ you always need to be safe. Some tools require more risk of injury than others so it pays to be consistently safe. 😊 Dan

Great video... have you ever thought about putting a block from like a 4x4 post or something to take up that gap/space between the log and the hydralic? You will be splitting waaay faster and it will completely split the wood.

For safety you could weld a 3/4 inch spike to the push plate that moves so the log cannot go up after the push plate spikes into the log. If the spike lines up with the wedge it will split better too. Great video, I need a face shield for my log helmet.

yoo Dan, what type of wood are you splitting? do you think it can handle oak?

All different types, oak, birch, spruce, pine. I use pine a lot in the fall for light heat. Hard woods for cold winter months. The only downside is speed compared to a gas powered splitter, way slower! Hope that helps. 😊Dan

No you can’t, but, if you read the comment I pinned from a fellow KZbinr he had a great suggestion to help solve this issue. I like my 5 ton electric Harbor Freight wood splitter better. it has a two speed lever at the back and I simply clamp the on off switch in the on position, have done 10s of cords with it over the last 15 years, no major problems, and no kickback.

does the bleeder screw need to be open when operating the splitter

Yes!! If it’s not open during operation it can damage the hydraulic. To much pressure build up in the hydraulic. Hope that helps. Dan 😊

The design of these types of machines is wrong, I have one similar, the button makes you be too far forward in the killing area of log missiles! I now also have hard pads in my overalls which slip in the knee area, as one log missile tried to spin my knee cap round, also you need blocks of wood in front of logs to use up the empty space, then you speed up the process and logs go all the way through, without leaving that last stringy bit to wrestle with

Agreed, the design is not great for these issues. I didn’t wanna spend the money for gas ⛽️ powered, but they seem to be way better designed. 🙂Dan

I see some of the videos of these log splitters and showing how they use it. Alot f them are wearing shorts, tennis shoes (or even bare footed! WTF?) and no protective eye wear, or fae protection of any kind. Stupid.
