4:20 Powering on at the highest setting helps the blades gain initial momentum to "spin up". The motor requires a high voltage to start, and may not start spinning in a lower speed. The fan has to overcome opposing forces like friction in the bearings and air resistance. Full power start is less stress on the motor, since it quickly reaches equilibrium. #FanOfFans

100% correct. Most fans with a dial go from off to max on the first turn

I use the old style fan while camping a lot (or any sleep setting with no air flow or higher temps), so the increased size of the new model isn't very appealing, although not a huge downside if others use it mainly in a work environment.
