imagine this. i'm still using an i5-3470 saving up for a ryzen 2600 to match my gtx 1070. i'm about 15 years behind.

15:34 To say the Ryzen 1600 has aged 'Very poorly' is a little hyperbolic, just compare it to its direct competitor; the i5 7600, now that has, unequivocally aged very poorly indeed. The 1600's 6 cores, 12 threads offered excellent value, as did the more-than-useable included Wraith Spire cooler. It was only ever positioned and priced, as a mid-range CPU... and that was over 6 1/2 years ago. I think, given the whole platform package and cost, it's actually aged rather gracefully.

I understand your point (re: compared to Intel's offerings of the same era). Also, it's not unfair to take the 1600, run today's latest titles, and see that it's not faring well. That's not a bad leg to stand on when stating it has aged poorly. Understand my bias here. The 1600 blew me away when it was released, especially at its price, and used it proudly for a few years. I have an emotional attachment to the thing, even though I have to admit it isn't holding up too well today.

It depends on the use, I had a 1600 and it was great but it wasn't the best for gaming. But I agree that the comparison here should have been done with the Intel counterpart rather than a new AMD cpu, because the question is which one aged better. And I feel having 6 cores and 12 threads is going to make it last a lot longer than the i5 7600 with 4 cores and 4 threads. What the 1600 did do was bring 6 core CPU's to the midrange and stop Intel constantly releasing quad cores. It's an important CPU milestone that changed the CPU market forever.

The R5 1600 is now a £30 cpu. To says its aged poorly is a poor choice of words. Pair it with a more reasonable GPU a it still does a very good job, and you will still have a great upgrade path if you pick a decent mobo.
@mesicek7

It was poor to begin with. These cpu's weren't meant for gaming but for productivity work at the time. AMD were so embarassed by it's gaming performance they literally showed gaming charts at higher resolutions where the gpu was being bottlenecked.
@ave6358
@ave6358 9 ай бұрын
@@mesicek7 Dude, think twice about that. Back then, owning a 1600 was (IPC speaking) like having a cheap core I7 6800K with less overclocking headroom, for a less than a quarter of its value. It was the first consumer product to bring 6 cores and 12 threads to the masses. How can it be a bad chip? That single core gaming performance loss you mentioned against the intel counterpart, Core I5 7600k, dissapeared by 2018, when games started to take advantage of its multicore performance. Even today in 2024, 7 years after its release, and as you see in the video, it still can handle 1080P in 90% of the titles. Not bad at all
@mesicek7
@mesicek7 9 ай бұрын
@@ave6358 Are you serious? The 6800k was at least 15% faster. Most of the benchmarks at the time comparing it to it were gimped - JokerProductions blatantly used different graphic settings when comparing them. When found out he just nuked the video that had over 50k views.

@@mesicek7 Imagine saying a cpu 7 years after it's release handling 1080p 60fps in most games was bad to begin with. Mental problem.

@@TheFantomsLair They're using very low settings to pass the 60fps mark which is very disingenious considering the hype these cpu's got from certain tech wannabe analyists. Very Low settings are used when benchmarking cpu performance not gpu performance.

I did a similar thing myself over the summer, I had upgraded a machine for a friend and gotten an 1800X and X370 board out of it, I tested vs my 7800X3D and the results were tragic for the old chip. Its amazing how far they have come in just a few years. That being said, I did some driver streamlining and got the 1800X running in Windows 7 for playing some old games which you can't do with the newer stuff.

well if you consider that you can pick up a used R5 1600 for 20 bucks and a used a320 board for another 20 bucks or so this CPU becomes quite impressive for the budget

I have this CPU and it still does what it needs to do. It's great for every day office tasks and is solid at gaming at 1080p. At this point, the only reason why I'm planning to upgrade soon is for windows 11 upgrade path and for the novelty of new tech.

Thank you for the video and testing. Very good timing. I have that 1600 for office use,. This is actually a very useful test. I don't know if it is possible, but it would be really interesting to see how the power consumption is between the two chips running the same load ( really and load ) For instance the same fps or same productivity task to see if the large advancement in technology has resulted in a significant total power savings.

I built PCs around three different Zen1 CPUs: 1600, 1700, and even a 1500X. The only one I still have (in its box) is the 1700. It was in limited service until just a few weeks ago, now replaced on its original Aorus X370 Gaming K5 motherboard by a 5600 (after a chipset software update and three BIOS updates). The original Zen1 chips had memory speed and compatibility issues, but they were massively better than the FX chips they replaced. Though they are now pretty much obsolete, for the vast majority of PC users a Zen1 chip would still serve adequately.

i like when they do comparisons with a NORMAL GPU like a 3060 or 6600XT, for Normal People, as you know, if you 4090TI money, you will only use a 7800X3d for max performance, and no hasnt aged poorly, for only a measly $225 you could upgrade to 5800x3d for just a cpu upgrade it takes it to modern levels, in Intel you would have done 4 platform upgrades, so it is money is no object for intel
