Gordon unboxes and reviews the Asus Zenbook S 13 OLED and the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U CPU inside to see just how fast this 8-core laptop is. He runs use through a march of benchmarks that measure everything from video editing to Microsoft Office performance compared to an Core i7-1195G7, as well as the older generation Ryzen 7 4800U & 5800U. We also get to see the fantastic RDNA 2 based GPU performance in a handful of games, proving that you can indeed do some gaming on a thin and light laptop like this.

Ryzen with that efficiency again, 12hours battery life, with RDNA2 on top of it, really cherry on top. Alder Lake might be more powerful yeah, but it's GUZZLING watts like there's no tomorrow, definitely NOT something you want in laptop 🤣

Indeed, buying a thin and light you expect to use it on battery, then performance on battery and battery life are important. In fact I'd prefer the screen to be 1600p as I think even 1200p is fine for 13.3" or 14" and lower res could give your another hour or two of usage.

Thats exactly it. Theyre ryzen mobile processors. Of course theres processors out there more powerful, but what you want in a MOBILE PLATFORM is MOBILITY, not needing to be tethered to a powerpoint like intels competing processors. Its a very obvious win to ryzen from me (and i used to be an intel fanboy for all my pc builds)

I've got an HP 15" Envy X360 for my wife. It was a steal and the Ryzen 5700U is Ultra efficient. She gets several days between charges. (about 14 hours) 100% confidence you can leave the charger at home instead of bringing it to work with a full charge. I'm looking specifically for the Ryzen 6000 series U processors for a laptop for my daughter now. Can't beat the combination of performance and efficiency for the price. Might do another HP Envy we'll see. RDNA2 will be good for light gaming for her.

Good to hear. I've got the older version. I use my machine daily for a lot of work. In the first year i got 7 hours between charges (i used to charge from 30-90%, 20-95%). You can imagine i could get 9 hours if I did 100-5% charge. Now i get about 5 1/2 hours a Year and 8 months in. (i push her hard). Still, great machine!!

I have an older 2019 HP ENVY X360 and, god, I love this laptop. I just can't have anything else after that, it's so light and portable (13"), I never thought I'd seek for smaller screens instead of bigger ones. I'll update once the Ryzen 6000u comes to HPs as well.

The Laptop you're using for Intel Platform, MSI Prestige 14 EVO, has a huge TDP advantage for the i7-1195G7. It can hit64W (Short term PL2) and maintain 35W PL1 indefinitely during CPU only work, resulting very high clock rates. That is significantly higher than the max 25W TDP limit in the 6800U under Zenbook 13S and way higher than the 20W-17W TDP of the 5800U in Zenbook 13. Because of that only, you're seeing so much performance in lightly threaded application from the Intel Platform. I think the laptops you're comparing should be having similar TDP level setup for a better comparison and that is not any very complex thing to understand. When the IdeaPad Slim 7 with 6800U will become available, able to heat 30W+, check that against Intel and see how much single threaded advantage you have. I have a 5800U IdeaPad 5 Pro 14 and HP Envy 14 with 1185G7 and setting TDP of both of them to 30W (Using Intel XTU and Ryzen Controller), the benchmark scores are almost similar in lightly threaded applications, apart from Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

Just a heads up to people who are buying a Zenbook with the touch screen panel, there is a layer they use for the touch screen that causes a screen door effect when you are semi close to the panel, its very very bad in terms of clarity and completely ruins the laptop. Thunderbolt was opened up and this is why the standard is not USB4. INTEL lifted the restriction associated with licensing the technology.
@-felt
@-felt Жыл бұрын
So usb 4 is completely backwards compatible with tb3 and has some functionalities of tb4. The reason for usb 4 rollout is so that brands like amd dont have to license intel for a heavily fragmented protocol, as well as usb 4 seeks to consoloidate everything in to 1 package. If a usb 4 port doesnt support all protocols, it cannot be labelled as usb 4 or has to be very transparent as to what it can support (i cant remember off the top of my head which route they ended up taking). Iirc apple even have to label their 2020 m1 pro with usb 4 instead of tb4 as it couldnt output the display requirements of tb4, but met all usb 4 requirements, and usb 4 was a better claim than tb3

You can indeed get ASICs without tunneling support that are USB4 such as VIA's controller. A Thunderbolt 3 drive should not function in a VIA discrete USB4 card in a desktop PC as far as I know since most existing Thunderbolt 3 drives do not have USB support. I do have cabinets with combo T3/USB that will work in USB 3.2 10Gbps mode, but not in Thunderbolt.

@FakeGordonMahUng 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Thunderbolt 4 is essentially Thunderbolt 3 with a higher floor of features an includes USB4 support. Since this laptop should have "Thunderbolt 3 certification" Thunderbolt 4 devices should work just fine as USB4 (full featured version) is basically Thunderbolt 4 in many ways.

@@FakeGordonMahUng Thank you. Would love some more follow up updates and videos on how well Thunderbolt ends up working with USB4 on AMD laptops. For years the only way to have a good docking experience was with an intel laptop, now that there are some AMD laptops with USB4 it could open up a lot more choices. However, outside this video there is barely any coverage/tests/information of how well thunderbolt with AMD actually works. Even the vendors don't list if the USB4 port is 20 or 40gbps, so customers are left confused or with the wrong expectations. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more USB4 testing.
@FakeGordonMahUng
@FakeGordonMahUng 2 жыл бұрын
@@gunhound45 I agree. USB4 was expected, I dunno, 12 months ago but the pandemic basically put a kink in everything. On Friday, I successfully used the Zenbook with an actual USB4/Thunderbolt 4 dock/enclosure. It's the first one I've seen and likely one of the very few "real" USB4/Thunderbolt 4 devices. As I understand it, USB4=Thunderbolt 4 unless, well, it's a USB4 base spec then, it isn't. The SoC has Thunderbolt compatibility, but it is up to each vendor to get certification for it. As I understand it, few will skip the certification I believe, but technically someone can build a USB4 laptop with full 40Gbps and PCIe tunneling using only USB4 protocol--not obtain Thunderbolt certification--and Thunderbolt 3 devices will not work. Thunderbolt 4, however, because it is USB4, will work. But TLDR; using the beta BIOS, I have used Thunderbolt 3-based drive enclosures (2), a Thunderbolt "4" (although I think it is using a Thunderbolt 3 Titan Ridge controller) dock with the onboard Gigabit Ethernet working, a 'fake' USB4 enclosure (combo Titan Ridge and USB controller) and a legit Thunderbolt 4/USB4 dock/enclosure and an older Thunderbolt 3 GPU enclosure with a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. The only no go was a 10GbE Thunderbolt 3 adapter which may be a driver issue on the adapter since I did get Ethernet to work on another dock. Video in bound once I get a couple of answers I have out.

And a USB-C charging standard means people can share chargers just like on phones. We have a 2009 Lenovo Z360 with i3 380M Mother gave it to me around 2013. Please don't just take Asus's word for screen brightness...Test it and see what you ACTUALLY get....that's why we watch reviewer's videos. I've seen other laptop reviewers (Tom's hardware and now Hardware Canucks) who measured the actual brightness level of this OLED screen and got a result of 321 nits and 359 nits!!!! That's a FAR CRY from the 550 nits claimed my Asus. Again...please test it for yourself and update us with the results.
@FakeGordonMahUng
@FakeGordonMahUng 2 жыл бұрын
Performance testing took precedent over verifying screen brightness. There's only so many hours in a day. Since everyone seems to be fixated on this, it's worth looking at. Keep in mind: If they are advertising 550 nits and unable to ever hit that--it's a legal liability so I'd think possibly firmware/drivers, someone goofed up or intentionally misrepresenting it which opens a company up that game we like here in the U.S. A class action lawsuit.

@@FakeGordonMahUng I get it given that this is one of the first laptops with a 6800u chip in it. Please do look into the display claims made by Asus. I've now run across two major KZbin Reviewers (Tom's Hardware and Hardware Canucks) that have both measured the actual screen brightness in the lowish to mid-300's (i.e., 321 and 359 nits) vs the 400 nits claimed...And frankly the 550 "peak" brightness is just marketing BS that is designed to mislead the consumer into thinking that they are getting a true 550 nit display. It really makes me not TRUST another word out of ASUS's "mouth". Also I should note that these other YT channels found that the color accuracy claims of ASUS were good but overstated as well.

550 Nits is "HDR 3% window" brightness. "Full-window SDR" is rated 370 Nits. These numbers have been measured multiple times by numerous reviewers since 2020 when this Samsung display first launched. I understand your confusion but please get your facts correct before blaming the manufacturer.

@@blue4059 I'm talking about a system that was just announced in 2022. You are referencing systems that shipped in 2020. Frankly I couldn't give a rat's ass about any other system that was launched with a Samsung panel in 2020. And I pointed to two well respected YT'ers that tested this SPECIFIC system and measured it's brightness at significantly under 400 nits (it's advertised brightness). Point me to YT'ers who have measured the brightness level of this SPECIFIC system...I don't want to hear about what was tested in 2020. And re: 550 nits of "Peak brightness"...you completely missed my point this "Peak brightness" is just marketing BS to deceive users into thinking they are getting a 550 nit display.

Consider the size and weight of the laptop and the OEM choices on fan profiles and power consumption. I can tell you the Slim 7 really, really pushes the wattage very hard using 60 watts at the wall (with battery at 100%) while both of the Asus laptops tended to be in the ~40 watt range. Laptops are ultimately decisions made by the OEM combined with the CPU. Also: This laptop is pretty thin hence no USB-A for you.

The problem with old reviewers is they do things like leaving the dreaded component stickers all over the laptop. Imagine PC World if they reviewed cars. Would they leave the dealer sticker on the window of the car for the entire review? Now that I think about it, they probably would. Not so long ago, I visited an older relative whose laptop was at the end of life. You know what he still had on his 5 year old laptop? All the stickers. Intel Inside and all those marketing stickers that are meant solely for in-store display marketing usage. But what made me laugh was after 5+ years of use with this laptop, the screen protector film that is meant only for shipping was still on his laptop. It was even partially pealing off but he never thought it was a removable item. Maybe he should review tech for PC World given he adheres to their standard operating procedures.
@FakeGordonMahUng

@@pcworld Vendors don't care if we remove stickers or not--but these are review units and the property of the vendor. The unit eventually goes back and gets resold so my philosophy is to leave it alone so the vendor can sell it again. It ain't my property. Also, that knock on the door? That's the sticker police with a warrant to examine all electronics and property for any factory stickers.
