Ryzen 9 7900X3D Undervolt & Overclock to 5789 MHz With B650I Aorus Ultra | SkatterBencher #58

In today's video, I overclock the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D Raphael CPU up to 5789 MHz with the GIGABYTE B650I Aorus Ultra motherboard and EK custom loop water cooling.
I picked this motherboard to check the X3D overclocking experience on a more mainstream offering. Also, I really like compact mini ITX solutions. Unlike the first-gen Ryzen X3D, the 7000X3D series are unlocked for overclocking. However, that doesn't mean it's easy to overclock.

I wish we could set fmax per CCD. That way you could set a negative fmax for the performance CCD and then use ECLK OC to get the cache CCD higher clocks.

is ther any harm in turning PBO and EXPO on to Auto if you're using an AIO instead of a custom loop? Or is PBO ideally meant for high performance cooling?

Aside from the "technically" voiding warranty, PBO is just an extension of the CPU-regulated Precision Boost. So the CPU safety mechanisms will still ensure safe voltage and stability

This is so different coming from Intel after so many years. I only decided to go 7950X3D for the V Cache size being massive (for tarkov). Overclocking just 20~30% seems so complex and shows mild results.

On my asus rog strix motherboard its impossible to change my fmax frq even after setting pbo to manual, only thing I can change is set a positive frequency on fmax but I cant change any of the values. Is this normal?

Most of the overclocking performance gains, even on x3d, come from RAM overclocking - particularly setting custom timings. I'm seeing up to 20-25% gains on my 7950x3d in CPU/RAM heavy games and some particular productivity workloads like file compression

@@mistalan 6400mt/s 1Rx8, 3200mclk/uclk, 2133 fclk, 1.35 vdd/vddq, 1.25v soc, 1.05vddp, 30-38-36-44-80, 4/8/20 RRD, 600 rfc, generally everything at floor. Max mem OC gain in a game +36% on Factorio (+26% on vcache CCD) You just don't see numbers like this elsewhere and can't get the best performance without mem OC if the workload doesn't fit easily in the L3 cache.

So for the ryzen 7 3D cups you basically need a motherboard that has eclk2 mode available (to increase clocks), and allows applying fixed voltage to the cpu (to increase voltage above the 1.2v "limit")?

Yes, asynchronous eclk is the only way to increase the 3D V-Cache frequency. As for voltage, honestly I don't think you need >1.2V. Even with 1.05V the V-Cache CCD will hit the maximum temperature in a sustained all-core workload

@@SkatterBencher Increasing frequency also increases power draw on its own. And having high 1-2-3 thread clocks is good for gaming and some work loads. But regardless, temperature can be kept in check with better cooling. I love fooling around testing direct die liquid heat transfer. You can get much lower cpu-to-coolant deltas with that.

I have 4 sticks 64gigs of Kingston ddr5 (non expo) running at 5600mhz but all 4 at 6000mhz makes the system unstable , would i be better off just using 2 sticks 32 gigs and running them at 6000mhz?

If you need the 64GB of memory, then I'd stick with DDR5-5600 instead

I tried the strategy #3 with my Ryzen 7900X3D and B650 Asus TUF gaming but didnt work, i play alot of VRChat and that's why i got that CPU Vrchat works with Unity and Unity really loves L3 Cache, but i feel like i need a little overclock on my CPU because i open alot of programs when i play on VR (Steam Vr, Meta Software, Space Calibrator, OVR Advance Settings) i have a decent GPU for the game (RTX 3090) but yeah still need a little more power on my CPU (i didnt get the 7950X3D cuz it got out of stock at that time) any tips for that?

Okay so how stable is it though? And does is consistently sit at this speed or does it just casually hit it in small single thread. I have a 5950x OC’d with PBO sure it can hit 5.225ghz but it surely doesn’t stay there. It constantly bounces around 4-4.7 then casually up to 5.2 for a second and back down. All core loads look a lot more like 4.6ghz not my max speeds. Just wondering how these react, my experience with intel has been that they just sit at their max boost clock unless they are on a significant load.

All my overclocks are intended to be fully stable. That's why I include Prime95 AVX and non-AVX stability tests and check the performance/stability across a wide range of benchmark applications. I would consider any of my OC strategies for my personal daily system. Regarding the bouncing clocks: AMD uses an AVFS technique for clock boosting whereas Intel uses DVFS. AVFS is non-deterministic which is why you see the clocks bounce up and down. I also explained how it works in my Raphael Overclocking What's New video

The IGP has a power budget too, yes. It is part of the overall Turbo Boost 2.0 power management.

Something that would make me more interested in watching your overclock video is to release a condensed version. Maybe have 2 channels.. one with the full 30+ min video and one with a 5 to 10 min version. I love what you do but the length is a problem for me as i am busy busy. Keep at it man!

No, the X3D CCD is locked from increasing Fmax Boost Override. The only way to increase the X3D CCD frequency is by using Async Eclk

It is worth it, if you have good cooling and you set the voltages well :) I have a simple 2 fan cheap $80 AIO and have my boosts at 5.65mhz. I get like 5-7 more fps in certain titles that don't make use of the Cache. it's free and doesn't really generate much more heat. max is around 77c. Doens't throttle till around 89c. So I''ve even got plenty of headroom if I wanted to tinker XD
