I've got to say, I like the look of it to be honest. They've certainly improved over wrc4, I can tell just by watching this, and I really like that dashcam. Nice 1 Milestone. I'll be giving this a look!

I think there's been a lot of negativity towards this, even well before any footage was seen. Okay, it's not Dirt Rally, it's not RBR, but after Milestone's previous WRC games (which were god awful), you can tell they have went to great lengths to build proper rally stages and make some steps towards a more believable (I pick the word believable over realistic) driving model. Also, consider all rally games ever released. There are very very few rally games which have this quality of stage design, which is often grossly overlooked. There are a lot of issues with SLRE, but as a rally game on it's own, I think it's much better than it's given credit for, mostly because of it being overshadowed by Dirt Rally. Compare this to WRC 5, for example!

+nickyp28 I agree, and perhaps I may have been a little too harsh in steering (excuse the pun) people away from it. However, the past WRC games were not marketed as sims. This one is. By doing that, Milestone automatically put it into competition with RBR & DiRT Rally. Against those games, SLRE is a distant 3rd. Thanks for commenting, it was good to read a different opinion :)

+Jimmy Broadbent Are you seriously implying that this is less a sim than Dirt Rally? Were you very impressed with DR's first build at all? Or could it be you installed the demo just for the sake of making a disapproving video? For a proper (p)review it's a must to at least give it some time to sink in, to tweak the controls, to find how to fix the 180° lock issue and to get used to the cars behaviour. Apparently you couldn't be bothered with any of that. Then what's the point in this preview at all? You say the driving is too easy and no challenge at all, yet it's completely obvious you are struggling to keep the pace and through the tricky corners. The car behaves as it should on snow while on asphalt it has much more grip. Why don't you give it some credit for at least that? It may be a simplified experience relative to RBR and especially its mods, but it definitely feels more of a sim than DR to me. Also the feedback makes more sense as well.

Gravel is kind of ok though, but that's about it. As for SLRE being "so damn easy", you are kidding yourself. DR feels like it's on rails compared to SLRE.

I've seen ads for it on facebook and this is exactly how I expected it to be. It's a shame. Would have benefitted Rally sims if Dirt had some competition to fight off. I think dirt looks better sounds better drives better plays better and makes you feel better

Ps4 version has no framerate issues. I haven't tried Dirt yet but I'm loving this so far.

So many sheep in the comment section. Why not try it for yourselfs, you might even like it, atleast give it a chance and play it. I think it's an o'k game seeing as it's not finished yet. The rally stages are probably the best i've seen from a rally sim and the physics aren't bad either with a wheel, you just need to get the settings right.

@@DAGATHire the demo is a very old build, the full game is fairly good once you manage to solve the horrible optimization issues. it definitely feels more sim than Dirt Rally, the different surfaces are represented well and the weight transfers and ffb are on point. the stages are probably the best ever seen on a retail rally game, they're extremely diverse and boost up the replayability.

I suspect that the reason you were losing SO MUCH time in the Mini is just that the car isn't really designed to compete against the AI cars. That the car is, itself, slower would also explain why the track seemed so much easier the second time 'round; going around a corner 20 mph slower is actually genuinely easier, lol.

This Monte Carlo stage actually looks better than DRs version. It has more variety, looks more alive and has an acceptable width. Just being honest here. If this was well optimized for PC people would be singing a different tune.

(I've tried this demo) It feels like this game's plagued by the typical dumbing down seen in most genres on consoles. I don't see any reason to get this over Dirt Rally/RBR, or even as an addition to them. It's an arcade rally game with sim stages.

played different stage tarmac sanremo on xbox one felt really good defo sim. and nice smooth graffics maybe this a shit stage on a demo. other reviewers like team vvv are saying the handling is sim good the weight is good and tracks are sim tight im forward to this game

I tried the demo also. Problem I was having was the severe frame rate drop, 15 to 17 fps, in the middle of the Monte Carlo stage. The rest of the stage it was in the 30 fps range. It made the car just about impossible to drive. The one thing I did see was some of the cars; Renault Alpine, Toyota Celica, & Bmw 2002, that I'd love to see in DiRT Rally.

i7fan The optimization for this game is bad, for me anyway. I can play BF4/Dirt rally/Crysis 3 on high with constant 60fps+ but with this I'm getting below 30 & it drops every like 5 seconds causing to stutter.

That's not a challenge. You can be 19 seconds down first time and second be 50 seconds ahead because you learned the track and how the game actually work. It's a matter of feel of the game.

sad to hear its not great. i really like the graphics at least the stage. before bashing the ffb, would be nice to check if you are running into clipping issues with the polo r as the infos you gave us lead to this cause of a damp ffb. i will try myself but thanks for this video

+Phil Langer I tested it now and i must say if they might be braver and put more bumbs and cracks on the road surface they have a pretty good start so far. the shown stage is way superior to the DirtRally ones (just the surface is too smooth). all the new born rally pros who start playing dirtrally and think this is the top of everything might be wrong just bashing this game. the ffb is better than the dirtrally one on earlyaccess release. try these settings: ffb force 70 and (2. ffb value) vibration to 95. the polo might be a bit too stable but i will jugde a few month after release.

The only thing i like about this game, is what appears to be very realistic lighting. other than that, horrible but i'm not sad as Dirt rally is all i need (with hopefully more stages added in the future)

+scaleop4 it's called steering dampening. what it does it move the in game steering wheel slowly that it always needs about a second to catch up with your inputs.

I almost want to give this game false praise to see if i can squeeze another rally out of Codemsters Dirt game lol. I tried this demo and i liked everything apart from the actual driving. Nice menus, service area etc FFB has a little more weight on my G25 than Dirt without making the wheel creak. But everything else was just meh. I didn't feel like i was actually driving the car and had no idea whether i was taking a turn too slow or fast (couldn't feel where the limit was). Co-driver sounds good, maybe a tad muffled. Disappointed overall and feel sorry for Loeb

Why do company's now dumb down racing games like this game is WRC 5 with a re-branding and that's it i get the feeling true racing games are the thing of the past yeah Assetto Corsa, IRacing ,Game stock car and DIRT rally are fantastic games but really just 4 PC sim's to come out in 2-3 year's? Like what's going on? To many company's doing the same thing if one company just made a realistic sim where you start from the bottom and work your way up through all different classes so you start from go karting and work to there where ever you want, GT3, GT4, BTCC ,WTTC ,F1 Endurance DTM hell classic racing, make a story out of it you start as a 8 year old and end as a 45 year old and you can start a team to continue then work back up through the category's hire driver's even have your kid race for you. Does no one have an imagination anymore that game would sell in the Million's but nope same shit one company make's a fantastic game and another goes oh look that games selling well let's copy them but it doesn't work out for them. To many shitty company's copying decent company's to make a quick buck the 1980's gaming crash will happen again if there not careful it's not just racing games that are suffering.

Car Guy No unless you play assetto crosa with a controller than no that game is in the top 3 for best physics. My favoruite Rfactor 2, Game stock car extreme and Assetto corsa not going to get into an argument but Forza is way off even comparing to these games.

Just last night I also gave the SLRE demo a first stab, and your first impressions mirror my own. I played it using a G27 and fresh off a stint of RSRBR (added as a disclaimer). + Looked fairly solid. Very bright. Surfaces were ok + I think that there is some halfway decent physics hidden in there somewhere - Sounds awful... about as bad if not worse than RBR, and lets face it RBR's sounds suck. - Interior cams automatically shut off HUD - Menus were awkward feeling to say the least - Control setup was not intuitive with hidden advanced settings - Force Feedback was complete shit... really bad. It had a sloppy mid 90 deg then it got really stiff without any actual feedback as to what the car was doing. It was like fighting the centering spring the whole time. If Milestone were to fix its controller options (multiple inputs, more intuitive setup... its wizard was a complete joke), and its force feedback system I would give this title another serious look, but as it sits it is nearly unplayable. If anyone has some tips as to how to tune the controller (G27) so that it doesn't feel awful, I would gladly give those settings another go and give the game another shake.

Not a good idea giving impressions of the demo like that, without even touching/looking at the settings. Granted, Milestone did a bad, horrible and lazy job packaging this demo and out-of-the-box it feels terrible. No triple screen support, no multiple controllers, weird stuttering, controls not working properly in menus, settings forgotten after a restart etc. Sounds are very lacklustre too. For Logitech wheels, in profiler; 100%, 100%, 100%, 0% spring OFF, uncheck "allow game to adjust settings", custom degrees in-game = FFB feels very good. Not perfect, the best, not even great, but fun. Give it another shot.

Not everybody on console has a wheel and sometimes I feel like games like this one are more designed with controller users in mind.

It's another great game being targeted for hate by a bunch of mindless sheep who haven't played it. Decent Rally games like this are few and far between. It doesn't have to be all about RBR and Dirt. Give it try before copying all the other sheep who haven't played it and hating.
