Finally a video on throwing, it's for sure the sport with the most skill development and physical performance requirements similar to weightlifting, would love to see you guys cover Bondarchuks model of sports specificity and how that is transferable into many other contexts! Thanks for the content boys, keep it coming!

Throwers are unbelievable athletes. There's a video of Joe Kovacs doing 320kg for a set of 10 on back squats in training, and Ryan Crouser (shot put wr holder) has some crazy training videos too. I believe I saw a clip of him getting a 34" or 36" vertical at 145+ kg bodyweight.

It's not surprising that throwers are some of the most impressive athletes in the world in cross discipline. Throwing is one of the movements humans are best at in the animal kingdom, we evolved to do it better than any other creature.

My fellow Irish guys, while coaching shotputters, I spoke with an Olympic champion in the Shot, Mike Stulce who told me he cleaned 250Kgs and snatched 200kgs at 6'4" . I had seen a video of him cleaning 230kgs, but did not know this was not his best. He also said he did a back squat at 340kgs weightlifter-style. Food for thought...

So for a good athlete, someone who wants to be good at their throwing sport you'd want to be looking at something like 1.5x times bodyweight push press and 1.2-1.5 power clean

I don’t think the hang power clean or snatch are the most effective lift weightlifters do. The most effective lift would be the split jerk using your non dominant leg forward. The timing and position is almost identical to the position you deliver the shot and the discus and the javelin(this one most applicable of all) in. If you’re a right handed thrower your right foot lands first in the center, then the left at the front(same right left with the split). You also need to get your back knee bent and block the left leg hard with equal balance in both feet. Beyond that with the jerk if you are taught to internally rotate overhead you’re building scapular stability in internal rotation which is how you deliver the discus. The timing and positions are so similar I don’t understand why more coaches don’t use that lift as the primary strength lift for throwers.
@hainleysimpson15073 жыл бұрын
It's the primary lift in Jamaican high schools for throwers atleast.

Apart from the generally larger stature of throwers, they share much of the same qualities as weightlifters I guess in terms of an abundance of fast twitch fibres and great neurology etc for one powerful exertion

It's funny to think of the throws siphoning off US weightlifting talent. The US is so stacked in the shot putt in particular that the chance of an athlete making a living from throwing is probably as remote as it is for weightlifting. Good for college scholarships, though.
