Do The Musicy Thing I had no idea his work was in Homestuck until I got into Undertale. His songs always sound sentimental to me and that's why I love them. Great job by the way, you're one of the best pianists I've seen cover these songs.

Well ofc it is, Its doing complex motions with both hands intently instead of just vaguely moving your arms. patting het and rubbing belly at the same time is EASY compared to piano. You need years of practice to get this good :P

What do you mean by "Kvothe-style mind-splitting"?
@sheavsey
@sheavsey 9 жыл бұрын
I worry that you're messing with forces that shouldn't be trifled with when you wrestle with these tracks that clearly weren't meant to be played by humans. Just... be careful, is all. Someone might lose an arm, or something.
@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 9 жыл бұрын
sheavsey That's part of the fun of these - taking pieces that weren't intended to fit on solo piano (or duo, with Sburban Jungle) and figuring out how to make them playable. And if someone loses an arm, they'll just have to...retrieve arm.

That's really impressive for a solo! Even if there were a couple of hiccups, the feat itself is amazing as it is. I also really liked the intro of the Vriskagram version. Also I have to say I haven't seen the middle pedal be used as much as this video
@BasemanW
@BasemanW 9 жыл бұрын
Joshua Paas Those "hiccups" are most probably unavoidable. That is, unless you can make your hand go limp, flail it straight across the piano, and still press the right keys.

Joshua Paas Thanks! Yes, there were a couple of hiccups; everything in it *can* be played accurately, but getting everything to go right on a given take is out of my level (honestly, all of my arrangements here have little hiccups, but they're more exposed in Moonsetter because it's less enveloped in the pedal.

You're an incredible pianist!! I would love to see you play Candles and Clockwork. I've been trying to figure it out on the piano myself, but I can never seem to get it right...
@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 9 жыл бұрын
Spoony Chan Thanks! In Candles and Clockwork it would be a tricky to fit the main melody in between the two arpeggiating lines, and to keep the whole thing from becoming enveloped in pedal (because the original maintains a light texture). But...honestly, that's a lot like the challenges in Moonsetter, so I could probably figure out a way to make it work. I've added it to the list of possible future arrangements.
@SpoonyCatt

You're welcome! And yeah, I can definitely see that being a problem, and would explain why I can't find any covers of it anywhere...
@dothemusicything8541

If you could find a clarinetist to play it with, I think it would be really nice for clarinet and piano (and much easier for both to play than a solo piano version would be).
@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 9 жыл бұрын
An arrangement with clarinet probably may not exist yet. I was just saying that an arrangement for that would work well if you made one. If you're having trouble working out the piece...from what I remember it's mostly F#, D, and A chords (frequently sevenths and ninths). If you're playing it with a Bb clarinet (rather than an A clarinet), you might want to shift it down a half step (from F# minor to F minor) for ease.

@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 9 жыл бұрын
Veertje-Feather Honestly, the violin's part goes fairly naturally into the right hand - the main difficulty is catching the cello part in the left hand while still keeping the original piano left hand going. But completeness was the idea with this, so I'm glad it came across. Thanks!

In the beginning minute, with the easier melody, your hands are often out of sync, with your right hand being way faster than your left hand. Best way to fix this is practicing really slowly, even praciticing hands separately if necessary. When practicing very slowly pedal also isn't necessary.

I noticed all your comments about the tricky pedalling, both on this video, and on the previous one (in reference to this), and I only just now realized how much sostenuto you're using! Yikes! That can't be easy to time without catching the right hand in there.
@dothemusicything8541

LeonardMeltsner It's hard. Even after much practicing, I lost a lot of takes recording because a bass note didn't catch or a melody note did when it wasn't supposed to. Between that and some of the rapid jumps in the left hand, this is one of the hardest arrangements I've done.

@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this one's hard. You could certainly play it as a duet; I didn't want to because...what you really need for this are three hands. Which is either a fairly underwhelming duet, or a difficult solo. But it would be easy enough to transcribe a duet out of the solo part that would spare the precise pedaling that this requires.

Well, I wish I could even get close to how good you are at this song. I do play piano but just as a Hobby, but I still wish I could play this well.

Thank you! This one is a particularly difficult one as well; some of the others might be better to start with playing.

And finally, I can say that I learned this piece. I didn't think it was possible, but damn. So much fun to play! Such a good song too... Thanks... (can't really get to 130 bpm yet, might not even be possible, my personal best is 110 bpm.)

It might be a little basic, but it would be cool to hear a version of Showtime from you. Either way, this was awesome!

Pirateguy7 Thanks! I won't do just the piano version of Showtime (my thing is doing arrangements, and that would just be a transcription). But I have considered combining that with the chiptune version (and possibly other versions of the Showtime theme that have appeared in other pieces).

+Clara Harper Thanks! I like Mother a lot (I hope it's used in A7), but I do arrangements here, and that's already a solo piano piece, so I wouldn't really be doing anything interesting with it. It would just be a different interpretation of the exact same notes.

this song has been my mortal enemy for the last two years, the most frustratingly difficult is the jumping back and forth in the left hand and adding another part for the right hand at about 2:00 on top of the preexisting melody that was repeating.

I was always hoping for some John and Rose action for this song. But I guess the flash was great, regardless. Say, I adore your skills, and your talent must be applauded. May I inquire the amount of time taken to be this good? I'll blindly assume about 6-10 years of practice?

Abby Nadira I've been playing for...16 years I think? Granted, for some of those years, I was young (I started at 6), so they weren't worth much. Were I a piano major, would have progressed much faster, and I'd be much better. But composition's been my main focus for the last several years. If you started in your teens or older, 6-10 years of playing piano would probably be very reasonable to reach and pass my level.

Do The Musicy Thing I appreciate that you took a portion of your time to reply, and be very informative. Thank you so much! I was just very curious, because I have an uncle who's also a pianist. He started at about 14-16, I think, which would explain why he's not as good as you are. I'll make sure to note what you said. On the other hand, I love your work and covers. Keep it up, man.
