Kris Malbo Keep playing - I'm competent at piano, but not remarkable. (And I'm not saying that to be self-deprecating - I'm around a lot of piano majors who are *far* better pianists than me.) You may well be able to play pieces like this in time.

+Do The Musicy Thing hey I just want to challenge you for something, I want you to play the song for CASCADE. I be really impressed if you could play that long. at the moment it's the longest one. although Andrew has confirmed that in the last update he'll make a longer scene. also he will win world record for largest story. it's currently the story of government or something, he needs around 4000 more pages. he's going to add about 16000. and to think, this all started just because he felt like having fun. I'm sure all his popularity is pretty fun though. BTW you should check out Neo-Kosmos. Andrew is going to help make it to soon.
@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 8 жыл бұрын
Joshua Nichols I've thought about Cascade, and I do feel that it would require at least a couple of string instruments along with piano to do it justice, so...it's probably not going to happen, unless I meet or convert some string player Homestucks who have the time to learn it.

This was pretty cool, but I think parts of it suffered a lot from the fact that both hands have to share a pedal. The left hand was clearly supposed to use a pedal and the right hand wasn't. Most obvious in part that starts at 1:30.
@dothemusicything8541
@dothemusicything8541 8 жыл бұрын
+David Brickey Yeah, that's unavoidable. Also, at that particular spot, my right hand needed the pedal to lighten the touch of those notes. Even though they'd sound better without the pedal, I couldn't have played the r.h. part quickly enough without the pedal (a better pianist could have, but the left hand still needs pedal, as you mentioned).

Ally Swatling Thanks! I'll consider it - I really like that piece too. It does look like someone on KZbin has done an arrangement of it, but mine would be substantially different, so I still might. There are a lot of pieces based primarily on the Doctor theme, and I'll probably only do one (or two at most) to avoid redundancy. I've also considered arranging Green Ghost - I don't think anyone's tried that one, and seems sort of like a culmination of that theme (although you could make a good argument for the Savior of the Dreaming Dead being the culmination). Either way, it'll be a while, but I do definitely want to arrange a Doctor-based piece at some point.

Sebastian Portier-Young Metronome. That's how I learn anything difficult. Start it as slow as necessary to play a passage nearly perfectly (difficult passages I often have to start at half speed, and sometimes even slower). Then turn the metronome incrementally faster, and practice the passage at that speed until you can play it nearly perfectly. And then keep speeding it up like that until it's full speed. The extensensive repetition involved tends to mean that, by the time it's nearing full speed, the passage will be memorized (or nearly so), which makes it much easier, because then the eyes are free watch the hands.

just wow. i am an aspiring pianist trying to teach myself from youtube tutorials. when i see something like this, i can't help to feel a little brought down... but anyways, could you maybe tell me how you learned and for how long you've been playing? just so i see where i stand and maybe could learn more efficiently?

Arden Thomas I started playing when I was 6 (my mother showed me basics, and then I learned with a computer program), and took lessons starting from when I was 9 until last year. So...about 16 years total, 12 with lessons.

CheezyKitten IsAwesome Thanks - I'm definitely going to do more. I've been learning the next arrangement for the last couple weeks (I'm hoping - although I can't be certain until I've done the recording - to release it on 6/12). "Rex Duodecim Angelus" is on my list of pieces I'd like to arrange - I don't know that I'll get to it particularly soon, but I do hope to eventually.

How did you learn to play this? Did you try to learn it by listening to the song and trying to play piano at the same time?
@dothemusicything8541

RLauraG4 I always work out the notes of arrangements before learning them at the piano. So I listen to a little bit of the original several times and figure out what the parts are and then how to convey them on the piano. Sometimes that's a fairly simple matter of playing a melody and chords as they come, but sometimes I'm having to integrate the rhythms of a percussion part into another part, or working out how to play a section that really need three hands with two. And then I keep doing that for the whole piece. In the case of Carne Vale, the initial arranging was done away from the piano, whereas Gold Pilot was done mostly at the piano. Once I've made the arrangement, I start learning it at the piano. I generally make several tweaks in the process of learning it as I figure out how to make something more practical, or find that something I thought was playable wasn't, (or vice versa). And then I practice it rather a lot until it's ready to record.

lin fire I'd hardly heard that one before your comment...it definitely has some potential. The words would have to be converted into notes to give their rhythmic accents (because I am not going to shout words myself), but it could work. I've added it to the Rather Long List of Potential Arrangements.

Charmi the Eevee Perhaps it was a bit predictable. But I do somewhat favor pieces that have been used in comic, and [S] Game Over was remarkable. One of the next arrangements I'm working is a piece that hasn't appeared in comic (not yet, anyway), so perhaps it'll be a little less obvious. Thanks for listening and commenting!

Do The Musicy Thing That's okay that you choose ones in the comic because Hussie tends to choose some pretty good ones. But there are a lot of good ones that he hasn't used yet! You should just choose something you want to do :3

I agree on all counts. Sometimes the main restriction on what I arrange is what can translate to piano. For example, Moonsetter is one of my favorite tracks in all of Homestuck music, but it already has a full piano part...and then two string parts. Any time I've tried to think of a solo piano version, it feels like I'm just leaving holes in the existing piano part to play the others (or, alternately, omitting the others to play the piano part). Perhaps I'll figure out an effective way to arrange it someday, but I'm not going to make an arrangement unless I feel I can do it justice. The same difficulty also applies to a lot of the One Year Older album - it's one of my favorite Homestuck albums, but a lot of the pieces are either like Moonsetter in that way, or already solo piano (in which case there's no arranging to be done).

Q frythedeliveryguy Q I've been playing about 16 years (I'm 22 now), although the first few I was young, so they aren't worth that much. (Which is to say, it wouldn't take you 16 years of playing if you're working on it a comparable amount). Once you've learned some, look up some of the solo piano pieces from Homestuck, like Mother, Underfoot, and Stargaze (I know sheet music exists for all of those). Those are generally quite easy.
