S.O.L. Scout Survival Kit

Today we check out the S.O.L. Scout Survival Kit. Not a bad kit, but made better with a few extra add-on items. Enjoy!

I enjoy these videos. As far as kits go, I can't take any of them seriously without having a tarp. Fire and water are easy to handle with kits. Shelter is not so easy in a real situation. I've got a 5x7 polyester tarp from Walmart for $10. With cordage and a space blanket in the same sack it weights 10oz and measures 6x4x2 packed. That and a steel cook cup are the beginnings of any kit for me.

If you have a vacuum sealer (food saver, etc) you can put that space blanket in a small pouch and vac seal it. That will reduce the size of the blanket (kind of like compressing it) and gain a lot of room. I do this with my medical items as well (such as guaze pads/rolls) and the gained space is very useful.

Hahaha, great minds think alike. ;-) I made some of those same additions to my S.O.L. Scout Kit. A while ago Amazon had them for $17 (!) which is great for what you get. The contents are pretty high quality and as you noted, the bag has room for some extra stuff. I was able to fit the Whirl-Pak water bag, 10 Aquatabs, , a Mini Bic, a flat roll duct tape (I removed the round roll since my flat one fit better with the rest of the contents), of a small knife, a cyalume stick, a tiny flashlight and a 20' hank of cordage strong enough to use to deploy the blanket as a shelter. If you can get the Scout Kit for around $20 it's about the best value out there as a base to build on. Good video!

I would substitute UCO windproof/waterproof matches for the S.O.L. sparker tool. Also, I would add bankline. Since I always carry at least 2 knives, I don't need a cutting tool in that muni kit.

I found this at my local REI. I added to it to make it better. I also tried to copy it with spares I had. I used empty medicine (pill) bottles. I like your addition.

Plan on doing the same upgrades plus maybe some storm proof matches(5) in a vacuum seal bag. Probably also sacrifice my Spyderco ladybug to the kit.

SOL blankets are more of a plastic than mylar, so they are more durable. However, they used to be made in USA and had instructions printed on them as well they came sealed in a second bag. The current ones are made in China, don't have instructions printed on them, and don't come in the second bag so they are more bulky than the USA ones. If you look around you may be able to find older USA blankets, they will have an American flag on them and say Made in USA.

The simplest signal mirror we have with us while trekking is and we do not think about it the wrap paper of our granola bars! The inside of the wrap is always highly reflective aluminium foil/plastic ? When you look at the mini signal mirror in this kit you can easily see that the granola bar wraps reflective side is at least 6 times bigger? You fold it back to the size of a booklet of matches and put it in you jeans small pocket ?.

Ever tried using that granola wrapper for signaling? Even some plastic mirrors are not up to much beyond 50meters, same with CD or DVD... They are not flat enough and disperse the light, even cheaper glass mirrors are crap for signaling

You should check out the KA-BAR Dozier. It’s small, light, can take a whooping, and only costs about $20. It would go great in some of these kits

Nice review. Did I miss fishing line? Use a sewing machine bobbin with fish line. Really sm but holds a lot of line. 🎣

I did a review of this kit a few years ago and the fishing kit was complete garbage. The line would break with very little effort and I was able to straiten out the hooks by hand, making them completely useless to actually catch fish. The kit also lacked enough cordage to be useful. it really wasn't worth the money.
