This was my first gun purchase at 23yo. I will never forget, the old man that sold it to me said "You can pass this gun to your grandchildren". 13 years later and it's still by far the most comfortable gun I own. 9mm and 380's are great, but I still prefer my old 38 snubby. I added the laser grip, perfect for self defense. Anything else is overkill. Depending on your occupation.

One of my favorite firearms of all time because of the versatility. Load 38 snake shot in it for poisonous snakes while doing yard work. Load it with hollowpoints as a pocket pistol or backup. Lightweight and easier to shoot if you put bigger grips on it. I put Hogues on mine and it's much easier to shoot and still concealable. I've been blessed to handle a lot of firearms in my over 64 years of living but I can't think of any firearm more handy for self-defense than a S&W 638 Bodyguard...:)

I have had several 638s over the years. I like it because it does good service for a jamfree pocket pistol, and on woods walks with snake shot loads. The exposed hammer spur makes this a very versatile revolver. I carry mine often in a pocket holster, but you can carry it and even fire it from a jacket pocket with no jamming.

I just traded my grandfather my 642-2 airweight for his 1958 Mod. 36. I wanted the his for sentimental purposes but i also considered it being a concealed hammer that it would be easier for him being 80+ years if he encountered a situation which it called for. Being we are both veterans (Army Infantry) & (Navy Corpsman) we share an appreciation for classic military or police firearms. I appreciate the videos as i find more and more classics i always refer to this channel for critique. Thanks

I actually carry the .380 S&W Bodyguard (the little semi-auto) this gun actually feels just an ounce lighter, but it still larger in size than I want to carry. I probably won't carry this one, it was just to add to the collection. But I love it, and with the single action option I can shoot very well with it.

Dear Hickok, same remarks from hunters point of view concerning the worth of the 638 construction: It has a hammer - covered against issues pulling the revolver but usable if 100% precision is needed. Some hunters in Germany use a 38 special revolver for the finishing shot. Then single action is very helpfull to hit with the first shot. It is also servicable for trapping. For killing trapped small predators we use "caliber reduction catridges" from .38 special to .22 lr. To hit a fox or enok in a trap the single action is also helpfull. Best regards from Germany, Abteilix

Always have loved revolvers. Personally if i had to pick one handgun to have it would either be a J or K frame 38 spl or 357 mag with a 2-3" barrel. IMO the .38 is the perfect balance of power, and recoil..Even if I went with a 357 I would 9 times outta ten fill it with 38 + ps. So simple to reload, and very widely available just about any where u look. Just a very versatile cartridge, and no matter what anyone says a 38 spl especially in a good quality + p load is far from a slouch and is very similar to 9mm parabellum. Thanks for this as always..Love all your vids!

Mr Hitchcock, the 1955 Chief came in Nickel Plate. I had the pleasure of finding one in 1990 that had never been fired. I didn't leave it that way though. I carried it many years and then my father (borrowed) it for many years as he had a 4 in model 10 that became to cumbersome for him to carry. After over a decade he gave it back to me yesterday as he can no longer carry, but this has been a great gun we both have enjoyed and will be passed down to my children. Thank you for this video !!!

I carried a Ruger LCR in .357 for about a year and I can definitely attest to too much caliber for too little and too light of a gun. My range limit on it was about 20 rounds before I had to put it down. The one comforting thought about a gun this small in .357 is the strength of the cylinder. It's always nice to "have the option" but the peace of mind you can have carrying .38 +p's and not worrying about durability over the long-haul of the gun's life is comforting.

I started a 36 year career in law enforcement in 1973. These were THE off duty and detective preferred handguns (along with the Colt Detective Special, Cobra or Agent). The Model 38 Bodyguard and 40 Centennial were more popular than the Model 36 (Chief Special) because of the covered hammer and snag free profiles. I bought a Model 40 Centennial. On duty, I carried mine tucked in behind my Sam Browne belt in the "small of back" position between a couple belt keepers as a back up to my .357 DA duty revolver. It stayed in place there for 15 years of uniform duty. Off duty, it was either in Bucheimer leather holster or in my coat pocket. Detectives frequently wrapped the grips with rubber bands and tucked the gun in the waistband, without a holster. The rubber bands kept it from slipping down their leg. They also used "Hip Grip" grips where the right hand grip panel had a "lip" that caught the belt and kept the gun in place. I later bought a Model 640 Stainless Centennial. I still have the Model 40 and 640 and added a Model 642 Centennial Airweight a few years ago for one of my regular CC handguns. All of them have the factory grips with a Tyler T-Grip adapter.

Revolver shooting is a direct link to the past. It's only 5, or 6 rounds. You do not have magazines with 40 rounds that you can just "squirt" in the "general direction" of your target. You must be practiced, skilled, diliberate, close, and quick to use this revolver (think Jack Ruby, not GI- Joe). It's not a duty weapon, even though it was, and is one. It's a back-up, or a quick, hip-shot weapon. While your opponent with the .9mm auto is having fun, just squirting away Hollywood style, you must cover until you can make that 1 or 2 close, accurate shots that ends the dilemma. (If the dilemma lasts that long, you're in trouble anyways) Hence, the skill and discipline. A .38 spl. in sjhp is a close-in, deadly round, if you are close, & skilled enough to accurately deliver it. Using ball-nosed lead rounds may or may not deliver the results you favor; but, a 120 gr. sjhp will not disappoint. My personal favorite was the 1970's Colts Detective Special with the full ejector rod shroud.

Hickock45 is my idol. This man shoots better than I ever will or anyone I have watched especially at the 80 yard gong. I have carried a J frame Smith in one model or the other for probably 15 years. Smith makes so many good models. My most used is a 642 that I carry +P 125 Hornady Defense rounds. I also carry a steel 640 in .357 and like the performance results but the weight is noticeable. I want a .357 caliber 340PD in the worst way. It is much more difficult to shoot well and everyone has to make that decision about weight, performance and practice but the velocity can be tested. The velocity from the.357 is a tremendous increase. About 1250 fps compared to 850 fps in similar 38 + P. Who knows if I will be able to control the340PD to my satisfaction but I know the velocity and the consequent recoil will be much greater. Search youtube for comparison.

I agree, it's the Bodyguard. The stainless steel version of the Chief's Special is the model 60 - a 5-shot .38 Special. S&W does get a bit confusing sometimes.

MODEL 640 ❗️. When I had my FFL I bought 6 of them. (1990-2000). I love this gun. It became my daily carry. Just goes in ANY pocket. No snag problems, enough power in .38 Special, and if you need more gun in a gun fight........you need to stop getting in gun fights ❗️ I still have the other 5. Grandsons growing up.

I love my 638-2, which is the NO Lock version. I was trained with a S&W Revolver and carried one as my duty weapon for 10+ years so I bought this model for CC Use about 15 years ago before S&W had locks on their guns. IMO everyone should have at least one revolver and learn to become proficient with it and you will find out that this will make you a much better when you shoot your semi auto gun. Try It and you will like it!

Mr. Hickok....I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that the shrouded hammer design also allows you to shoot from inside a jacket pocket without drawing the firearm. No worries of the hammer grabbing material in your pocket.

I'm pretty young myself but always appreciated the revolver, more specifically small frame revolvers that were easy to conceal. I agree with your point on it not being the best gun to learn with for most people... But I feel that for my specific purposes and wants that I've figured out so far, the pros outweigh the cons of having a gun like this as a first gun.

Saturday March 26th we had a back yard target shot. my wife's cousin came over with her brand new (never fired) featherweight performance center s&w 38 special +p. the 37th round completely blew the barrel right on the gun, bent the bridge over the cylinder and busted the frame where the cylinder is threaded into the frame.

Bodyguard forever! I really want one of the steel models, but they are kind of spendy. I had a 638 for a long time and I traded it for a pocket auto--and that was a mistake. I'm only recently getting back into revolvers and a bodyguard or 6 is definitely on my to-buy list.

My fiance' has a 638 for Carry, and she trains with it at the range a lot with +Ps. . She has ended up shooting it in double action only. She also shoots steel competition, and she shoots the 638 so well she jokes about competing with it. It's an awesome little gun.

I bought the 442 because I couldn't find a 638 so you know that'll be on the chopping board one of these days when I run across a 638. LOL I'm selling 10 right now and I know I'll regret quite a few of them. Its just time to pare it down a bit and change it up. I'm selling a CZ SP-01 but bought a CZ75B to replace it.
