I decided today I was going to buy a revolver, and really had my eye on the Smith and Wesson model 66 combat pistol for $850. Then the sales guy let me know they just took in quite a few firearms from a estate, and that there's a model 27 that's literally like new for $350. I asked what else they had, among the list was a Remington R1 1911, new, never fired, in the box with everything for $450. So I walked out with 2 super nice pistols for the price I was going to spend for 1. What a great day, life is good!

Great video! The N frame S&Ws from the late 1950’s through the early 1980’s are some of the strongest revolvers ever made. Maybe not quite as smooth as a Python but much more rugged. Pinned and recessed are always best. Glad you mentioned the Model 28. It does not have the deep blue finish or the top strap checkering, the the two models are otherwise identical. Having turned 21 in the early 1970’s, I stopped into a liquor store to buy a six pack of beer one afternoon. Having been baling hay since early morning, I decided I deserved a “cold one”. As I walked in, the owner was putting out a new revolver that he had just gotten in. When I went to look at it, I realized it was an N frame S&W. Because of the Dirty Harry movies, Smith and Wesson had a hard time keeping up production of the different N frame models in the early to mid 1970’s. Forgetting about the beer for a period of time, I told the owner that I’d buy that Highway Patrolman. I’m glad that I did! I did have a target hammer and trigger put on it. I had a “poor man’s” Model 27, or at least a college senior’s Model 27. I’ve shot thousand of rounds with that revolver, mostly in .38 Special, because of the cost. It is my favorite revolver! It’s nice to see a gun review showcasing revolvers!

It costs too much to live there. Of course, it would be hilarious to see how Harry deals with all the idiot Hipsters and techies. He might even show up to a vehicle pedestrian accident where a hipster didn't look both ways before crossing the road, because he was on his smart phone.

Great video! The older gun reviews like this this one are my favorite. I never had a 27 but I do have a 4" 28 that I had a top notch high polished blue finish done with beautiful sambar stag handles. It is pinned and counter bored as well . It was one of those revolvers that was hardly ever fired but holstered a lot so it was tight and worthy of a face lift : ) Thanks again for all you guys do for us.

I am a fan of "N" Frame .357 Mag revolvers like M-27 and Mod 28-2, but also have a "K" frame M-19 and a Mod 17 K-22, both w/6 inch barrels, real masterpieces, just for shooting and/or hunting small to medium sized game.

As was pointed out, the N-frame is on the big side, especially for the .357 magnum cartridge. I owned two in the past and sold the last one over 25 years ago. Last year I walked into the local gun shop and spotted an absolutely gorgeous nickel 8 and 3/8-inch barreled M-27-2. After some haggling, it went home with me and goes to the range with me now and then.

My father carried a 6" Model 28 on duty as a CHP officer during the '70's. He's since given it to me. It's the one gun I'll never sell. He's in his 70's now, and a year or so ago, he went to the range with me and shot for the first time in probably a decade. He put his first six rounds through one ragged hole in the middle of the 10-ring at 25 yards with that Model 28.

I have a S&W Model 28, 4 inch, pinned and recessed, that I inherited from my father when he passed! He bought it new in 1963 and I myself, have put over 11,000 rounds of hot magnums through it! It is as tight today, as it was the day dad bought it! It is wonderfully accurate and will do any job it is tasked to do! It is my understanding that you are correct, that it is a less highly polished firearm and, therefore, less expensive! Dad bought it, new in the box for $65! Now they are out of sight! I don't mind not having the super good bluing! That's a matter of taste and for collectors! Dad bought this gun for use and that is what I use it for! It was my duty weapon when I was a cop and was replaced by a Browning P35 Hi Power, which was and still is highly accurate! I love them both and still use them both! I am glad you did a video on this Classic S&W revolver! You ALWAYS do the best videos! Kudos! Keep up the good work!

Thank you Hickok45 for this video! You inspired me to hunt for an older K-frame S&W and I found mine about a year ago. It's a Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman 6" Barrel made ~1984. Pinned and recessed, full forcing cone, (case-hardened) hammer-mounted firing pin, and big-ass walnut grips. I love everything about it! It is gorgeous and has a little bit of the soul of every master craftsman who created it. It's built like a tank and is extremely fun and accurate to shoot. I paid less than $600 (incl tax) for it and wouldn't trade it for any modern revolver. And it's all because of you and your amazing video. Life is good indeed, sir!

I watched this a couple years ago, but just had to go back and watch it again. Even though it isn't chambered in my favorite cartridge, I'll say it's chambered in the most useful, versatile one. And it is the most beautiful firearm S&W ever produced. I saw Patton's at the Museum too, it had ivory grips with his initials engraved on them. Skeeter Skelton's favorite Registered Magnum / 27 was his 5" loaded with the Lyman 358156 bullet and 1-.- grains of 2400. Thanks for doing an episode dedicated to this historically significant, iconic firearm.

In E. McGivern's Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting he included photos of man-sized targets shot by several different men with .357 S&W revolvers. About half the shots hit the target. The range was 600 yards. The book was published in the late 30s. There were targets shot at shorter ranges, down to 200 yards. The hit ratio was much higher. I've been shooting since the early 60s and revolvers are still my favorite handguns. For hunting it's a 629 with 6" barrel. In later years, for carrying and shooting for fun it's a 627 Pro Series with 4" barrel. Eight shots in the same same size revolver as the six-shot 27. I have two of them. One is for wearing out at my backyard range; the other is for carrying. You can reload them fast with moon clips. Yeah, I carry a Glock sometimes, but Smith revolvers seem to have guided warheads in any bullet fired from them and are sooo easy to hit with, at any range. A gallon can at 100 yards? No problem. 55 years of shooting revolvers (since I was a small boy) means I would have to live another 50 years to get as good with a featherweight Glock. I don't have ten years. This video is a classic, showing a classic to younger shooters who will probably never understand.

Aside from the lecture and knowledge transfer of these uploads, the next best parts is the shooting. Especially when John zooms in on the target his dad is shooting at. Hickok's a wonderful shot and seeing him plink the gong, with the round flying in, is a treat. If you ask me, that camera should be on a tripod and every effort should be made to capture the rounds going to target.

Back In 1982 when I first bought my 19-4, 6 inch, I was reloading .357, 125gr as hot as the spec sheet went. The 19 ate those reloads like a champ for 2 years until I traded it for a 686, 6 inch. Fast forward to a year ago I found another 19-4 in 6 inch, beautiful gun and bought that one to keep forever. I take it out once a year to shoot, my current .357 gun to carry is my 19 carry comp. S&W 586 was the first revolver I ever bought. It truly is fun being able to "plink" with .38 wad cutters or go full out with a 180 gr. bullet popping at 1400 fps.

I am lucky enough to own a mod 27. Its a Cadillac of a gun. My favorite to shoot. the trigger is smooth as butter. My grandfather bought it in the 70s. I don't think he ever shot it as it looked brand new when it was given to me after he passed. It was in the original box with the manual and other paperwork that came with it. I have had many offers from people wanting to buy it, but it aint for sale....ever. Also, I want to say that I really appreciate your videos Hickok! your the best!

It is nice to see you really enjoy shooting that mod.27 You may recall .38/44 which preceded the 27. Elmer Keith, who I had the pleasure to meet, was developing hot hand loads for the .38 special. which lead to the development of the .357. Also the original load was 1550fps with 158gr bullet.

The whole 27 line is unique. I’ve got the 627 V-Comp, 627 performance center model, the 327 TRR8 and even though they’re all 27’s their difference among one another is remarkable. All outstanding in their own ways.

Best revolver I ever had 6in model 28-2. Bought it used had these great wooden target grips that had the finger grooves carved in that fit my hands perfectly. I sold it because I thought I had to have a 4in new stainless model 686. Great gun also but Never enjoyed it as much as the old 28-2. Shot Hand loaded 38spl loaded to +p and it was perfect for target shooting for hours. Hard to beat a target pistol with real power and no recoil if you shoot the shorter cartridge. Then if you want to make more noise step up to magnums. It was pinned I have no idea how old it was though. Lesson learned never sell a great pistol.

I have a Model 28-2 and a Model 19-3; there is a world of difference when firing magnum loads through them. The heavier N frame mitigates the significant recoil; the K frame makes your hand numb after a few cylinder loads but you can shoot the 28 all afternoon. I love them both; both of mine are pinned and recessed early 1970's models and their fit and finish make them works of mechanical art. I only wish I could shoot them as well as Hickok does.

As an Englishman I can only live vicariously through this awesome channel & this legend of a pistolier! . In the UK there's a suspicion around firearms in that if you're interested in them or want to own one, you're dangerous. The over the top legislation of Blair's government saw handguns banned for home storage; Can someone please explain how the Model 27 came out in 1935 & the 19 in 1957? I always thought the numbers & models were sequential.
@hickok45
@hickok45 Жыл бұрын
With Glocks, the model numbers are sequential. I don't think that's been the case with S&W. In fact, they really did not use model numbers until the 1950's. Then they gave earlier guns, such as the original .357 Magnum, the "Registered Magnum" of 1935 a model number (27).
