I've had my Performance Center Shield .45 for a few weeks now. Such a perfect edc gun it's ridiculous. I have higher capacity guns , and even a 9mm Shield, but the .45 grip fills my hand nearly perfectly , and the trigger is combat perfection. It's gonna take something truly special for me to drop this from my EDC.

My local PD allows plainsclothes officers to carry the M&P compacts and Shields, though I've heard a lot of the detectives like using the Shield more since their duties are more investigations and not front line patrol where shootouts are more common. I would go so far to say that the M&P shield just might be the new Model 36 for Smith and Wesson now considering their massive production numbers and how well liked they are by those who own them. I've heard the 9mm model without a safety was the most popular one used by the PD detectives, but I've also heard that an increasing number of them are using the shield in the other two available calibers (.40 S&W and .45 ACP).

Great review overall. I really enjoy my Performance Center. 45. I traded in a regular Shield .40 cal, which was a good shooter. I like the trigger on this Performance Center model and follow up shots are better with the ported barrel. I bought a NEW 45 shield , Performance Center, picked it up Saturday the 2 of December. Took it home to dissemble and clean so I could shoot it. The slide stop would not move, so the slide would not lock back. When the gun was empty and uncocked and the trigger was activated, the slide moved back and forth a good 1/8 of an inch. Not only was the gun non-functioning, but a storage case was not included. So much for a quality firearm from an American company. First thing Monday I called S&W, the over the phone diagnosis was a rubbing trigger bar. The turn around time is a MONTH. When I was working , I carried S&Ws for 23 years. This may be my last one

@aviatortrucker61985 жыл бұрын
I purchased one the other day it is one of the most accurate small compacts I have ever shot. I love this gun except for one simple problem. The M&P 45 Shield IS NOT an ambidextrous fire arm. Unlike the full size M&P 45, that comes with the tool built into the hand grip and allows you to switch the magazine release from right hand to left handed this one does not allow it because the shape of the magazine release button cutout is different on both sides of the hand grip. One more thing to note the magazines are not ambidextrous either because they only have the notch cut out for the right handed magazine release catch. Ambidextrous magazines have a little notched square on both sides of the magazine shaft. So yet again I struggle to either learn to shoot weak handed or to suffer the handicap of slow reloading of a left-handed shooter using a right handed firearm. This is probably why some of the mod 2 models that do have an external thumb safety release only have it on the left side of the gun. This is for right handers to release the safety with their their right thumb. There’s no provision like the 1911 that has a thumb safety on both sides of the pistol. I’ve had to deal with this in the military with the M-16 or AR-15 which is strictly a right handed functioning rifle. Otherwise, it is a really great self defense gun to own.

I have a Shield 45 and it tends to shoot a bit low and left for me despite grip adjustment but still groups well. After 50 rounds I found the grip texture live able but a bit abrasive. I solved that with Talon grips and I love them. With standard factory loads I find the gun very pleasant to shoot but I've been using some 185 gr defensive stuff that is anything but pleasant. Still looking for the best carry ammo.

I did a lot of research and out of the 3.1 inch barrel 40 has the most muzzle energy. Quite a bit more than the 9, but only slightly more than the 45.
@astang10727 жыл бұрын
Oh, here we go! Look, I know that there are a lot of .45-good-'ol-fanboys but you have to remember that pistol rounds are very bad "man stoppers". Look at LE shooting research and you'll see that the fatality rate of both rounds are practically identical, and multiple shots are often required. Look at ballistic tests, the 9 penetrates just as much, sometimes more than the wide slow 45. A 9 gives faster follow-up hits and better capacity with virtualy the same terminal ballistics. Fast follow-ups and not having to reload is what keeps you alive in a firefight. And I'm a .40 guy! I could go on about how the 40 gives the same or more energy than the 45 with much better capacity....but I won't. I still like 9mm.
@ThenotMrNiceGuy01097 жыл бұрын
A Stang you are incorrect. I have heard stories that attackers received one 45 ACP bullet in center mass and we're dead before help could arrive. I shoot a Glock 21 gen 4 in 45 ACP and can tell you that it does a great job on Farrel hogs with only one or two follow up shots in the vitals. I use +p to increase it's potential. 9mm transfers energy no where near what the 45 does. I like 40 too and I can tell you that the 40 180 gr bullet won't create as large of a perminent cavety as the 45 180 GR shooting the same gr. Thanks for your opinion tho.

I stopped carrying my 3.8" XDm after realizing just how much .45 needs barrel length to get up to speed. Never again will I carry a short .45, and certainly never one that was short AND ported. What kind of muzzle velocity is that producing?
@justinv30807 жыл бұрын
Graham Baates Probably only hitting around 700 FPS for 230 gr range ammo.
@justinv30807 жыл бұрын
Graham Baates 230 gr @ 750 fps = 287 ft lbs, while a 9mm 124 gr hst will hit 1080 fps out of the shield which is 321 ft lbs plus an extra round in the shield and less recoil, the only sacrifice is a small amount of maximum expansion
@GBGuns7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, and a lot of hollow points don't expand well if they hit too slowly anyways so probably not even losing that. I learned this when Erika and I were first competing. I was using my 3.8" 45 because it was what I had. She was using my Glock 19. She could hit bowling pins and make them fly violently. The XDm not so mcuh. I did the math and found that a 4" 9mm has more energy then a 3.8" .45acp!
