This week, we are talking all about going out for drinks with your friends! Kat and Mark will read their own personal accounts of what it's like when they go out for some drinks with their friends, including lots of useful advanced English vocabulary, phrases and expressions that will help you talk about it in high level English.
Mark Teacher is the from the UK, so from Mark you will hear intermediate and advanced English phrases and expressions more commonly used in the United Kingdom, while Kat Teacher is from the United States, meaning her script and English vocabulary is more typical to hear from American people. We'll talk about the similarities and differences between British and American English, as well as places and the drinking culture of the two countries.
Throughout each episode, we will give lots of useful examples, and repeat each phrases at least 2 or 3 times, so you can hear our accents, pronunciation and feel confident enough to say it yourself. There are useful subtitles along with every episode (members get a PDF transcript to help them study).
We hope you enjoy this High Level Listening episode - of course, if you have any questions about the language or vocabulary used in this episode, or questions about English in general, please don't hesitate to reach out and ask us!
Happy Listening!
- Mark & Kat, HLL

Hello Patrizia! Thanks so much for your lovely comment and your question. "I'm getting on in years." or "She is getting on in years." is a correct phrase. And, yes, it means "getting older." In English I think we would use this to describe a person, or maybe a pet, but *not* an object (like an old TV or car). Merry Christmas to you too! We hope to see you in 2024!

Thanks so much! We're really glad you like our videos! About the phrase "leslie" - I looked into our notes and actually the subtitles are wrong 🤐 It was supposed to be "Mostly", but our mics didn't catch it properly and then the software didn't transcribe it correctly as a result (We have new fancy microphones now, so this happens much less often!) Good catch as well! We're actually both living in Mexico at the moment, but we visit home often!

Hi Kat an Mark, Thanks for your lovely channel and all these lessons. One question please : Do you speak in your usual speed ? Just because when i try to watch TV or movies, it sounds like "what are they talking about", it's too fast for me, but i understand you quite well and thank you very much. I have the same problems while speaking at work with colleagues from US or UK in some Teams meetings, they talk very fast (for me) sometimes. I think most people say the same things about speed. So What is your advice about that ? But anyway thank you, i hope to level up my english with you.
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 4 ай бұрын
Hi! That's a very good question and definitely a common issue for English learners. I (Mark) can explain and give you some helpful videos and tips here. First of all, we are experienced English teachers, and after so many years and classes, we can quite naturally "grade" our speaking speed to help non-native students. This speed makes sure we speak clearly so that students can hear almost every word, but it's not so slow that it's unnatural or strange. However, in movies, songs, conversations or times when people aren't "presenting" themselves and need to speak clearly to a large group, people speak faster - then the words start to blend together - then it becomes more difficult to hear. Especially if you have a person who repeats the same phrases every day at their job (like a waiter saying: "Hi, what can I get you?" or in a Teams call: "Can everyone see my screen?") - they also start to say phrases faster and faster and faster until it becomes a big blur. The best way to study this is to avoid long movie scenes, and focus on short phrases spoken very quickly. If you listen over and over and over you will slowly start to hear the individual words of the phrases, and it will become easier to remember and repeat. I actually really like this guy's videos because they are funny, short, and a great challenge to see if you can keep up with the speed. I think most native speakers can understand him on the first listen, see if you can catch what's he's saying: www.tiktok.com/@sullyfinlay/video/7325198138027887915?q=sullyfinlay&t=1706544235053 Oh yes, there's also a really cool website where you can watch very short clips of movies where they say specific phrases: www.playphrase.me/#/search - I recommend finding a phrase and watching the clips several times, you will start to hear the words more clearly each time. Hope some of that helps!

Thanks@@highlevellistening(Mark) for all your advice. About your 2 links, i prefer the second one 'playphrase' i will look over it but it sounds great. For the first one, I'm not really a fan but thanks anyway. Thank you for your help, i keep working on each episode with the transcript.

maybe you could make an episode about the amount of alcohol a driver can drink, for example in Poland where I come from this is a very important topic and I wonder what the situation is like in practice in Great Britain and the United States, how much you can drink, for example what a roadside check by the police looks like What are the penalties for drinking how society also treats drunk drivers I think it will be an interesting topic

Hi there thanks for listening! Speaking confidently is about saying the words fluidly over and over, if you can take the sentences, pause and repeat and mimic the speaker (Mark for British or Kat for American) you’ll notice it becomes easier and easier to speak them out loud. Hope this tip helps you in the future! We will start thinking more about videos that will help with speaking practice. Thanks for all your hard work and keep going!

Вам не хватает третьего ведущего из Австралии, тогда был бы полный комплект! И аудитория бы выросла в разы! Удачи!😊

Thanks for your feedback! It would be fun to have speakers from different accents for sure.

I think they also say when they don't feel like drinking or doing anything, I'm good which means I don't want , correct me guys if I'm wrong ❤

Yes, you are correct! If we're offered something like a refill or a dessert and we're not interested, it's easy to say "I'm good, thanks." Good morning, would you like another cup of coffee or a pastry? -Oh, I'm good, thanks. -I'm fine, thanks. (meaning I don't want those things, but thanks) Hey I'm gonna grab us a few beers, you want one? -Oh, I'm good here thanks, I've got my coke. Are you sure? My treat. -I'm not really drinking tonight, so I'll stick to coke. Of course, of course, sounds good! Hope that helps!
