That's veo interesting about soup, because in Russia we consider soup to be a main course, not a starter) thanks❤
@highlevellistening6 ай бұрын
Very interesting! Soups in Western menus are often quite simple, like mushroom or tomato soups. We don't usually have anything like "Borscht", maybe that would be listed under a "stew" on a British or American menu :)
@Laura777526 ай бұрын
@@highlevellistening great! Thanks. Can you tell me, please, if in English or American English the phrase "I'm stuffed" is considered to be a slang or rude. The matter is our Russian teacher thinks that it is not just "full" but it's the same as the verb "pig out" or "pork out", that it's a low language. Now I doubt, if it's okay to tell "I'm stuffed" in any situation (or just among friends as a slang word)? Phrase, help me🤔
@highlevellistening6 ай бұрын
Hi! I'm stuffed is not really rude or impolite, we actually use it to say "I'm really very full, and I couldn't really eat anything else!" so like: Would you like some dessert? Would you like some more? Oh no thank you, I'm stuffed! It was so good, thanks. Pig out is usually used with friends to say I'm going to eat a lot and eat very unhealthily haha, I'm gonna pig out on junk food this weekend, don't call me. lolol hope that helps!

@highlevellistening11 ай бұрын
That’s a great question! Usually overwhelmed means stressed and is often used negatively, but the phrase “overwhelmed by the support/response” (I think that’s what we said in the video) can also mean that we are feeling very emotional and is a positive phrase that can mean filled with emotion 🥰🥰 Thanks for listening and for a great question ☺️

Thank you so much for your videos. Your explanations are amazing. In this episode, you said about a different meaning of the verb "to do" in the phrase "to do dessert". It's like "to experience". I've got a question. What does the verb "do" mean in the phrase "the restaurant does a good set menu"? Is it "serve" or maybe "cook"?
@highlevellistening5 ай бұрын
Yes exactly that! The chef does a great steak! Means he makes the steak but with his own professional experience, very common with cooking, she does great cookies, this restaurant does great fish. Thanks for your question and joining us in class!

Thank you for the nice video again. It's interesting the word "pub" which offers many kinds of food and drinks. We have, in Japan, the same sound word "pub" that offers mainly alcoholic beverages and glamour ladies. We have the word "Izakaya" which counterparts the word English pub. Of course, the word "pub" might come from Mark's country, however, the word meaning has been changed, in our country where most nations are not familiar with English. If I have a chance to visit England, I could ask "could you recommend a good pub" without hesitated.
@highlevellistening11 ай бұрын
That’s a great point! Thanks for sharing your experience, even in the US, bars are almost 100% for adults and a pub experience was much more family friendly for sure. Pubs are some of our favorite places for a nice traditional English meal ☺️

At the end of this podcast Kat said ... And then you think, I could do fancy. If you're paying, if you're paying, I can [00:31:00] do fancy. You're right. What does I could do fancy means?
@highlevellistening10 ай бұрын
Great question! It's meant to be a bit of a joke: "If you're paying, I can do fancy" I don't normally want to pay a lot of money for a high quality restaurant, but if I don't have to pay, then I would be interested in going to a fancy restaurant. "I can/could do..." is a way to say, I would like to go to a fancy restaurant. what would you like to eat later? I could do Italian. I could do something quick. means I'm interested in Italian or eating something quick hope that helps!

hi what is the meaning overwhelmed ?
@highlevellistening4 ай бұрын
"Overwhelmed" is when you feel stressed or confused because there are so many many things. Maybe if you have a lot of tasks to do at work, you can feel overwhelmed. Maybe if you have to do a lot of chores and cleaning at home, you can feel overwhelmed. Or if you visit a big city with lots of taxis, people, bikes, noise, traffic, sellers - you can feel overwhelmed. Hope that helps!
