S1 - Ep 100 - Overnighting in the Tankwa Karoo at Zwartkop Farm!

Driving through the gate at Zwartkop Guest Farm after a long day on the gravel roads through the Tankwa Karoo was fantastic. Overnighting in such a tranquil setting was just what we needed. The next morning, we were up early enough to enjoy the beautiful Karoo sunrise with a steaming cup of coffee and a few rusks. What a magnificent place, the noise is the quiet of the Karoo. I was based in that part of the world "sourcing farms" the Tankwa Padstal was our local pub, if you call having to travel 80km "local", they allowed us to transverse their farm to save time going home at night. I called the owners the Google of the Karoo as they knew everything about the area, example who to call if one's "windpomp" or tractor needed repair. Yet they were recently from Pretoria, they had a "scheme" where farmers would drop off fruit and clothes for the "volk" who would arrive by donkey car to collect for free, each could take a bag of fruit and some clothes to be fair to everyone. That was real generosity and "Ubuntu" at its best because the poor actually did receive the fruits this time. I see that the area has improved and they now have a landing strip next to the padstal.

Your knowledge of the area is fantastic, thank you for sharing! I have no problem believing that you viewed an 80km trek to the farmstall as still being local, those roads go on forever. But we love it! 😁

We definitely got to know that part of the world, we put on 10 000km in the first two months doing exactly what you do, exploring the roads less travelled. Thats why your channel resonates with me.Respect to the Voortrekkers who navigated through there and the rest of the hinterland without the luxury of 4x4s or Kwids. Keep doing great 👍

What a wonderful place to stay in! I would have had a moonlit bath, just carrying some buckets of hot water out to fill the bath. Karoo is desert conditions, so very cold night and ht day, because there is nothing to keep the warmth in and it all radiates out, also because of clear skies.

It was a magical place, we still often think back to it with fond memories! 🤩 It was just too chilly for that bath, we just couldn't! 🥶🛁 And it wasn't even winter then, which proves your point to the clear days resulting in super cold nights.

Have you had any tyre problems as those tyres are not designed for long distance gravel roads

We've been really fortunate and have only had a flat tyre once, but we picked up nails in a campsite, so it wasn't even the gravel road! We drive really slow though, seldom above 60km/h, so that of course helps too. 🚗
